‘Buck’ Merricks
DANVILLE, Va. - Calvin C. “Buck” Merricks, 76, of 108 Parrish Road, died Friday, July 6, 2001, at the Danville Regional Medical Center after seven years of declining health.
Born Dec. 10, 1924, in Danville, he was a son of Luther E. Merricks and Eliza Shelton Merricks.
He was married
Sept. 10, 1946, to Elizabeth Hughes Merricks, who survives. He was co-owner and operator of Merricks and Davis Grocery for 25 years, then owner and operator of Merricks Realty for 15 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army Air Corp in the First Aircraft Repair Unit (Floating). He was a member of Moffet Memorial Baptist Church where he was a past chairman of the board of Deacons. He was a member of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122 and a 32nd Degree Mason in the Danville Scottish Rite.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Dalvin L. “Bucky” Merricks of Danville and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one sister, Edna M. Davis.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Ellison and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Cordie Payne
DANVILLE, Va. - Cordie Wells Payne, 81, died Saturday July 7, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after several years of declining health. She had resided at Roman Eagle Memorial Home the past four years.
Born June 13, 1920 in the Swansonville community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Eddie Laurens Wells and Clara Reynolds Wells. She was married
June 27, 1936 to Wilbur L. Payne, who predeceased her June 1, 1994.
She lived most of her life in the Dry Fork area of Pittsylvania County and worked for Dan River Mills prior to her retirement. She was a member of Oaks Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughter, Betty Payne Hundley and son in law, Wallace Hundley of Marietta, Georgia, and one granddaughter, Birdeana Rosenbaum and granson in law, Jim Rosenbaum of Danville, and two great grandsons, Dominick “Nick” Parker and Caleb Rosenbaum, all of Danville: one sister, Iris W. Hall of South Boston, and three brothers, Stuart Wells of Callands, Raleigh Wells of Chatham, and Rev. Clyde Wells of Martinsville.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Bobby L. Payne; two sisters, Adele W. Henderson and Hazel W. Lowe; and one brother, William E. Wells.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Gregory officiating. Interment
will follow at Boaze Family cemetery, Highway 41, Dry Fork, Virginia.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home Monday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M., and other times at the residence of Cordie Payne, across from Oakes Implement on Highway 41, Franklin Trnpk, Dry Fork.

Tania Poindexter
CASCADE, Va. - Tania Alexis Poindexter, 5, of 3354 Cascade Road, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, in Evergreen, Ala., as the result of an automobile accident.
Born June 17, 1996, in Danville, she was the daughter of Danielle Adams Poindexter and William Poindexter Jr., who survive. She was a student in grade K3/K4 at Mt. Calvary Christian Academy.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include paternal grandparents, William Poindexter Sr. and Sally Poindexter and maternal grandfather, Jessie David Adams.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. John W. Tinsley officiating. Interment
will follow at Adams Family cemetery.

Florence Richardson
DANVILLE, Va. - Florence Annette Richardson, 64, of 364 Ross St., died Friday, July 6, 2001, at the residence.
Born May 12, 1937, in Danville, she was the daughter of Willie Mae Ferguson and George Stanfield, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include six daughters, Voryann Howerton, Sharon Stanfield, Linda Stanfield, Regina Stanfield, Tina Jones and Belinda White, all of Danville; one sister, Essie Miller of Danville, and five brothers, Hayward Stanfield, Harold Stanfield, Larry Stanfield and James Ferguson, all of Danville, and Wren Stanfield of Greensboro, N.C.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bennett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Hairston officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.

Waverly Scearce
DANVILLE, Va. - Waverly Cassada Scearce, 81, of 874 Franklin Turnpike, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 10, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of David C. Cassada and Madie Jones Cassada.
She was married
to Grady “Tom” Scearce, who predeceased her. She was a member of First Pentacostal Holiness Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher and member of Women’s Auxilliary. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Grady F. Scearce Jr. of Pittsylvania County; three daughters, Lavonne Digman and Vicky Arnn, both of Danville, and Patricia Crumpton of Gretna; two brothers, Blair Cassada and Douglas “Dee” Cassada, both of Danville; three sisters, Eloise Hudgins, Lois C. Oakes and Virginia Simpkins, all of Danville; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by five brothers, Jones Cassada, Hugh Cassada, Paul Cassada, Latane Cassada and Johnny Cassada; three sisters, Flossie Davis, Doris Perkins and Cecil Walker, and one grandchild.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Barry Crumpton and the Rev. Allen Dawson officiating. Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Miriam Scruggs
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Miriam Motley Scruggs, formerly of Danville, Va., died Wednesday, July 4, 2001.
Born Dec. 9, 1910 in Danville, Va., she was married
to John William Scruggs, who predeceased her.
She was a former registered nurse and a graduate of Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pa. She and her husband owned and operated two different motels in the Daytona Beach area in the 1950s and 1960s.
Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Scruggs Alman of Viera; one son, John William Scruggs Jr. of Lake Mary; one granddaughter and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rebecca Yow officiating. Interment
will follow at Green Hill cemetery.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church.

Garnett Talbott
DANVILLE, Va. - Garnett Allen “Pete” Talbott, 62, of 809 Kristen Lane, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 18, 1939, in Halifax County, he was the son of Clifton Talbott and Myrtle A. Talbott.
He was married
June 9, 1990, to Pat Jeffries Talbott, who survives. He worked for J.P. Stevens for 30 years before a decline in health. He was a member of Halifax/South Boston Rescue Squad for over ten years and retired from the National Guard. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served 21 years and was a member of South Boston Ruritan Club. He coached Dixie League Baseball in South Boston and was of the Christian faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Vince Talbott of South Boston and one sister, Jean Maureen Rickman of South Boston.
The graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Graveside military honors will be provided by American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

George White
SUTHERLIN, Va. - George Randall White, 39, of 705 Kerns Church Road, died Friday, July 6, 2001, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C., after two days in the hospital.
Born Dec. 16, 1961, in Danville, he was the son of Jessie Willard White, who survives, and Alease Belcher White.
He lived most of his life in the Sutherline community of Pittsylvania County and briefly in Blacksburg while attending and graduating from Virginia Tech. He was employed by Stevens Auto and as a farmer. He was a member of Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Dan River High School.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include three sisters, Linda White Barley of Danville, Betty White Guerrant of Keeling, and Kitty White Stevens of Sutherlin.
He was predeceased, in addition to his mother, by two brothers, Jesse Carroll White and John Robert White.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Bradford officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Kitty Stevens, 705 Kerns Church Road, Sutherlin.

Evelyn Buchanan
CLOVER, Va. - Evelyn Virginia Tharp Buchanan, 78, of 1196 Guilltown Road, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Colonial Heights Convalescent Center.
Born Dec. 1, 1922, in Charlotte County, she was a daughter of Herman Tharp and Myrtle Tharp.
She was married
to Howard Raymond Buchanan, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and a member of Clover Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith K. Shaw of Richmond and Brenda B. Berry of Colonial Heights; one son, Stuart Buchanan of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Lena T. Becht of Long Island, N.Y., Pearl T. Durrette of Richmond and June T. Garner of Lawrenceville; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one brother, Herman Tharp and one sister, Nannie “Bee” Jerkins.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Clover Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Walker officiating. Interment
will follow at Clover cemetery on Mt. Laurel Road.

Lucy Burnett
ALTAVISTA, Va. - Lucy Rowland Dalton Burnett, 96, of Bedford Ave., died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Richfield Nursing Center in Salem.
Born Feb. 11, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joseph W. Rowland and Nannie Davis Rowland.
She married
to Ollie C. Dalton, who predeceased her and later married
B. Edward Burnett, who also predeceased her. She was a member of Central Baptist and was an employee of Burlington before her retirement.
Survivors include one brother, Marvin Rowland of Jarrett; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with Dr. Jim D. Nelson officiating. Interment
will follow at Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Colbert-Moran Chapel.

Harlston Byrd
DANVILLE, Va. - Harlston Davis Byrd, 76, of 125 Fairfield Avenue, died Tuesday morning July 10, 2001 at Riverside Health Care Center after a decline in health for a number of years.
Mrs. Byrd was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on Oct. 12, 1924, a daughter of the late Clarence Baxter Davis and Dora Rollins Davis. She married
Raymond Lee Byrd on May 10, 1943. He survives.
Mrs. Byrd made her home on Fairfield Avenue for the past 45 years. She worked for Dan River Inc. for a number of years before retiring on disability at the age of 38. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy on Baltimore Avenue.
Survivors in addition to her husband include three daughters, Dora A. McDaniel, Charleen B. Knowles and Penny B. Clifton, all of Danville; a son-in-law, Paul McDaniel of Danville; two sisters, Hilda Hundley of Stoneville, North Carolina, and Irene Broon of Gastonia, North Carolina; three brothers, Ralph, Joe and Herman Davis, all of Gastonia, North Carolina.; and eight grandchildren, Paul McDaniel and his wife Pam of Easley, South Carolina, Grover McDaniel and his wife Diane of San Antonio, Texas, Teresa Davis and her husband Reid, Ruth Ann McDaniel, Carol Clay, Jo Eanes and Tommy Knowles II and his wife Lisa, all of Danville, and Veronica Stanley and her husband Carl of Yanceyville, N.C.; and fourteen great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth DeHart and Lucille Turner.
Funeral services are scheduled to be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Charles Hawkins. Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m., and at the residence at other times.
