Waverly Scearce
DANVILLE, Va. - Waverly Cassada Scearce, 81, of 874 Franklin Turnpike, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 10, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of David C. Cassada and Madie Jones Cassada.
She was married
to Grady “Tom” Scearce, who predeceased her. She was a member of First Pentacostal Holiness Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher and member of Women’s Auxiliary. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Grady F. Scearce Jr. of Pittsylvania County; three daughters, Lavonne Digman and Vickie S. Arnn, both of Danville, and Patricia Crumpton of Gretna; two brothers, Blair Cassada and Douglas “Dee” Cassada, both of Danville; three sisters, Eloise Hudgins, Lois C. Oakes and Virginia Simpkins, all of Danville; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by five brothers, Jones Cassada, Hugh Cassada, Paul Cassada, Latane Cassada and Johnny Cassada; three sisters, Flossie Davis, Doris Perkins and Cecil Walker, and one grandchild.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Barry Crumpton and the Rev. Allen Dawson officiating. Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence.

Thomas Scott
DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas Wells Scott, 80, of 1619 Piney Forest Road, died on July 12, 2001 in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born on March 9, 1921, he was a son of the late Walter M. Scott and the late Aniva Wills Scott.
Mr. Scott had lived most of his life in Danville, where he had retired from the U.S. Postal Service as Supervisor of the Letter Carriers in 1973. He later served as Treasurer and manager of the Danville Postal Credit Union. He was a member of the local chapter of Disabled American Veterans and was a member of American Legion Post 325. Mr. Scott was a life long member of Lebanon Christian Church in Semora, NC. Mr. Scott served with the U.S. Army During W.W. II as a Technician 5th Grade. He served across France following the “D” Day invasion. His 102nd Infantry Division also crossed Belgium, Holland and Germany under the command of Gen. Montgomery of the British Armed Forces.
He was married
to Elaine Johnson Scott.
Survivors include his Wife, Elaine Johnson Scott of the residence; Son Douglas Wells Scott and Daughter-in-Law Karen F. Scott both of Hickory, NC; Son Mark Robertson Scott and Daughter-in-Law Melaine W. Scott both of Roanoke, Va.; Sisters Mary Ellen S. Berry of Powhatan, Va., Nell S. Anderson of Semora, NC and Anne S. Casstevens of Hamptonville, NC; and 4 Grandchildren, Kitty Wells Scott and Kevin Blake Scott, both of Hickory, NC and Avery Michelle Scott and Samuel Forrester Scott, both of Roanoke, Va.
The funeral will be held Saturday, July 14th at 1:00 p.m. from the Graveside in Highland Burial Park by the Reverend Daryl Joyce. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post 325.
The family will be at the residence 1619 Piney Forest Raod.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Lebanon Christian Church, Semora, NC 27343 or to the Commonwealth Home Nursing and Hospice, 159 Executive Drive, Danville, Virginia 24541.
Miriam Scruggs
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Miriam Motley Scruggs, formerly of Danville, Va., died Wednesday, July 4, 2001.
Born Dec. 9, 1910 in Danville, Va., she was married
to John William Scruggs, who predeceased her. She was a former registered nurse and a graduate of Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pa. She and her husband owned and operated two different motels in the Daytona Beach area in the 1950s and 1960s.
Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Scruggs Alman of Viera; one son, John William Scruggs Jr. of Lake Mary; one brother, Pendleton K. Motley of Largo, Fla; one sister, Rose Coleman of Semora, N.C.; one granddaughter and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rebecca Yow officiating. Interment
will follow at Green Hill cemetery.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church.

Roy Tarpley
DANVILLE, Va. - Roy James Tarpley, 61, of 6529 Old Richmond Road, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 1, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Townes Tarpley and Flossie Abbott Tarpley.
He was a former employee of Tultex Textile Company in Martinsville.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Tarpley Jr. of Athens, Greece, and Wesley Tarpley of upstate New York; one daughter, Cassandra Tarpley, also of upstate New York; four sisters, Mary Ann Wilson and Juanita Hairston, both of Danville, Reatta Myers of Chatham and Elnora Poole of Pemberton, N.J., and one brother, Robert Tarpley of Danville.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Lewis Tarpley officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Harvey Terry Sr.
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Deacon Harvey Terry Sr. “Bunk”, 71, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 6, 1929, in Halifax County, he was a son of Sally and Claude Terry.
He was married
to Vanvassel Overbey Terry, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of South Boston, include two daughters, Belva Owen of South Boston and Christine Warren of Montclair; three sons, Harvey Terry Jr. of South Boston, Stanley Terry of Clover and Richard Terry of Temple Hill, Md.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four foster sisters, Gladys Wimbish of Vernon Hill, Catherine Jefferson, Laverne Terry and Claudia Carter, all of Richmond; and five brothers, Wallace Terry, Henry Terry and John Terry, all of South Boston, Rev. Dr. Samuel Terry of Lynchburg and Cordell Terry of Albany, N.Y.
The funeral will be held 12 noon Saturday at New Vernon Baptist Church in Vernon Hill with the Rev. Roger Ford officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.

Margaret Daniels Turpin
DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Daniels Turpin, 85 of 1323 Ferry Road went to be with her Lord, on Friday, July 13, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was married
to George Raymond Turpin who predeceased her.
Mrs. Turpin was a charter member of Ferry Road Friends Church where she had served as the Pianist for over fifty years. She was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and a member of the Virginia Willis Missionary Society.
Mrs. Turpin is survived by two daughters, Melva T. Hayes and Judith T. Smith, both of Danville, two sons, Edwin R. Turpin of Ridgeway, Va., and Larry G. Turpin of Danville; one brother Rayford Daniels of Danville; three sisters, Ora Setliff, Dorothy Setliff and Jean Setliff all of Danville; Eleven Grandchildren, Seven Great Grandchildren and one Step-Great-Grandchild.
Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by three sisters, Edith Carter, Mamie Mansfield and Rebecca Willis and one brother,Doug Daniels.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 15, 20001, 3:00 P.M. at Townes Memorial Chapel. Rev. Linwood Hairfield and Rev. W.L. Wade will be conducting the services. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 14, 2001, 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Townes Funeral Home. Other times the family will at the residence of her daughter, Melva Hayes at 3040 Old Mayfield Road.

Michael Wilson
DANVILLE, Va. - Michael Anthony Wilson, 37, of 404 Bryant Avenue, died Friday, July 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after six years of declining health.
Born Oct. 28, 1963 in Danville, he was a son of Winifred Mason Wilson and Delores Hall Hudgins.
He had lived his entire life in Danville and had worked as a painter. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his mother, Delores Hudgins and stepfather, Neal Hudgins, both of Danville; one son, Michael Wayne Adkins of Danville; three sisters, Diane Harris, Brenda Emerson and Tammy Foster, all of Danville; one niece, Shannon Gibbs; four nephews, Christopher Hankins, Thomas Emerson, Jonathan Emerson and Timothy Emerson; and two uncles, Bobby Gene Hall and Tommy Lee Hall, both of Georgia.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Diane Harris, 340 Gemstone Lane, Danville, Va.

Raleigh Wilson
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Raleigh Wilson, 83, of 112 Maple Ave., died Saturday, July 7, 2001, in Newport News.
Born May 10, 1918, in Danville, he was the son of George Wilson and Maudene James Wilson.
He was a helper for Architect Firm and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three brothers, James Wilson and Dudley Wilson, both of Danville, and Clarence Wilson of Manhattan, N.Y., and six sisters, Ruth Bethel, Amanda Russell and Coleen Palmer, all of Danville, Frances Howard of Manhattan, N.Y., Irene Byrd of Newport News and Cora Lea Koger of Raleigh, N.C.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Chapel Church cemetery with the Rev. James Murrell officiating.
Viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Diane Barley, 278 Rambler Dr.

Ruby Aaron
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Rigney Aaron, 74, of Abingdon Place, formerly of Ringgold, died Monday, July 23, 2001 at 2:30 a.m. at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 28, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Lemon Rigney and Doris George Rigney.
She was married
to Charlie Coleman Aaron Sr., who predeceased her Nov. 15, 1985. She lived most of her life in Danville and lived at Abingdon Place for the past three years. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Charles C. Aaron of Cascade; three daughters, Nancy A. Newton, Judy A. Norton and Debra A. Simmons, all of Ringgold; one sister, Sandra R. Rudd of Cheraw, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one brother, Melvin D. Rigney.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Chapel with Bishop Jeffery E. Hopkins and the Rev. Tom Bailey officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Agatha Fields Allen, 81, formerly of Danville, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at the residence.
She was married
to Howard “Hank” Allen.

Marjorie B. Bailey
DANVILLE, Va. - Marjorie B. Bailey, 78, of 222 Courtland Street, Apt. 101, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born May 16, 1923, in Appomattox, VA., she was the daughter of Lt. John A. Bingham and Myrna Childers Bingham.
She was married
to Cecil G. Bailey, Sr., who predeceased her on January 21, 2000.
Mrs. Bailey was a retired special education school teacher. She was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church and belonged to Circle #5.
She is survived by two sons, John Bailey and his wife, Nina W. Bailey, Cecil G. Bailey, Jr. and his wife, Cindy S. Bailey all of Danville, one sister, Virginia B. Harvey of Richmond; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, July 21, 2001, from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends on Friday night from 7:00-8:30 pm at Townes Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of John Bailey, 324 Vicar Road, Shadowwood Park.
