Macie Blackstock

NATHALIE, Va. - Macie Snead Blackstock, 87, of 2053 Old Cedar Trail, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 12, 1913, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Jack Snead and Pearl Crenshaw Snead.
She was married to Albert Fuller Blackstock, who survives. She was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Carolyn B. Fisher of South Boston and Hazel B. Conner of Nathalie; three sisters, Pauline Crews of Nathalie, Mattie Throckmorton of Clover and Jacqueline Browder of Lawrenceville; one brother, Charlie Snead of Clover; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in additon to her parents, by one sister, Rosa Vassar and one brother, Hampton Snead.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. H.V. Conner and the Rev. Lee Roy Davis officitating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Sylvia Blackwell

DANVILLE, Va. - Sylvia Sahms Blackwell, 65, of 593 Arlington Road, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at the residence after two years of declining health.
Born June 24, 1936, in Gretna, she was a daughter of Grady Sahms and Frances Talbott Collins.
She was married to Paul Wiseman Blackwell, who predeceased her March 1, 1975. She lived in Danville for the past 25 years and spent many years traveling with her husband during his military career. She was a nurse for 20 years at Danville Regional Medical Center before her retirement in 1998. She was a member of Lighthouse Bible Church and a former member of Southall Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia Diane Van Der Hyde of Chatham; one son, the Rev. Paul Dana Blackwell of Greenville, S.C.; one sister, Patricia Rose Craighead of Verona; one brother, Robert “Bobby” Sahms of Lawrenceville; one stepbrother, Kenneth Collins of Baltimore; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul D. Blackwell officiating. Interment icon will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lillie Brown

CRYSTAL HILL, Va. - Lillie Epps Brown, 88, of 6150 Howard P. Anderson Road, died Friday, July 20, 2001 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Jan. 27, 1913, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Albert Epps and Lillie Smallman Epps.
She was married to Cabel Howard Brown, who predeceased her. She was a member of the Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia B. Loftis of Virgilina; one son, William H. Brown of Danville; one brother, Bobby Epps of Crewe; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Sherman “Chip“ Brown; three sisters; and five brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church with the Rev. Rebecca Powell and the Rev. Ed Griffin officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church or the Halifax County Rescue Squad.

Charlie Coles

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Deacon Charlie Walter Coles, 90, of 748 Summerset Road, Gretna, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born June 7, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Beverly Coles and Rosie Stone Coles.
He was married to Tennie Ward Coles, who survives. He was a member of First Church of Jesus, Altavista, where he served as chairman of the deacon board for many years and as a member of the missionary choir and brotherhood and was chairman emeritus of the deacon board. He was a retired employee of Klopman Mills.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include seven sons, Howard E. Coles of Clarksville, Charlie A. Coles, Buford D. Coles, Walter J. Coles, Nathaniel T. Coles and Curtis D. Coles, all of Gretna and Cecil R. Coles of Sandy Level; four daughters, Kathleen C. Sheffield, Barbara C. Wimbish and Sandra Wilson, all of Gretna and Darnetta Davis of High Point, N.C.; one adopted daughter, Shirley Clayton of Altavista; 24 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one son, Isiah Coles; nine brothers, Willie, James, Ezekiel, Ben, Beverley, Gordo, Warren, Altavista and Bogie Coles; and four sisters, Elsie Toler, Dakota Smith, Nanie Johnson and Rosa Poston.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Walter J. Coles officiating. Interment icon will follow at First Church of Jesus cemetery in Hurt.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Oscar Cook

RINGGOLD, Va. - Oscar McClweese Cook, 79, of 2411 South Boston Road, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health and three days in the hospital.
Born June 11, 1922, in Climax, he was a son of James Welton Cook and Maude C. Cook.
He was married to Virginia Corbin Cook, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County where he was employed by Dan River Inc. in the maintenance department. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Tammy Cook Kalz of Danville; one son, Roger Lee Cook of Haw River, N.C.; and one grandchild.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the graveside at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating.
The family will be at the residence of Tammy Kalz, 344 Hermitage Drive.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association Memorial and Honor Program - N.C.C., P.O. Box 26860, North Canton, OH 44720.

Katheryn Dewberry

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Katheryn Henderson Dewberry, 82, of 103 Rosehill Drive, died July 14, 2001, at the Woodview.
Born Nov. 27, 1918, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of William Morton Henderson and Irene Satterfield Henderson.
She was married to Stover J. Dewberry, who predeceased her and was a member of First Baptist Church in South Boston.
Survivors include one sister, Vernessa Henderson Mills of South Boston.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Fox officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home.

Ruth Ellis

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Hobson Ellis, 90, of 2885 Blairmont Drive, died Wednesday afternoon, July 18, 2001, at Abingdon Place of Danville.
Born Jan. 3, 1911, in High Point, N.C., she was the daughter of Henry Evan Hobson and Dora Ella Snow Hobson.
She was married to Charles David Ellis, who predeceased her in 1993. She worked as a clerk at Durham Hosiery Mill until her retirement. She was a member of Sandy Shores Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Martin A. Ellis of Ocala, Fla., Charles E. Ellis of Danville, and James D. Ellis of Scottsville; one brother, Henry R. Hobson of Fla.; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by five sisters, Treva Hughes, Mozelle Lewis, Hazel Myers, Lucille Walker and Josephine Parks.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Scearce officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Ethel Freeman

MITCHELLVILLE, Md. - Ethel Owens Freeman, 82, of Hyattsville, Maryland, and a longtime resident of Washington, D.C., died Sunday, July 15, 2001 at the Gladys Spellman Nursing Center.
She was born April 19, 1919, in Danville, Virginia, a daughter of the late Alexander and Hattie Wilson Owens. She is the last survivor of her immediate family.
Mrs. Freeman received her early education in the Danville Public Schools, having been a member of the first graduating class of John M. Langston High School. She attended Virginia State College, Norfolk Unit and graduated from Berean Institute, Philadelphia, PA.
She lived in Philadelphia for a number of years. After marrying Samuel B. Freeman, who predeceased her, she moved to Washington, D.C. and was a longtime civil service employee. He last position was administrative assistant to Judge Theodore Newman, Superior Court, District of Columbia.
After retiring, Mrs. Freeman became affiliated with a number of organizations: National Council of Negro Women, Operation Rescue of the D.C. Public Schools, the Auxiliary of Howard University, Retired Senior Volunteer Program Upper Northwest Community Group, National Association of Minority Political Women and many other organizations. She was also a member of the Fashionettes.
She is survived by her caretakers, niece and nephew Alexis O. Taylor of Mitchellville, MD and Alexander Owens, III of Richmond, Virginia; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice McDay of Greenbelt, MD, Helen Moss of Washington, D.C. and F. Elizabeth Owens, of Danville, Virginia; four nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 20, 2001 at 11:00 AM from the Trinity Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment icon will follow in the Rock Creek cemetery, Washington, D.C.

Christine Gauldin

DANVILLE, Va. - Christine Davis Gauldin, 79, of 4783 Riverside Drive, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born July 16, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ross Davis and Estelle Shelton Davis.
She was married to James Oliver Gauldin, who predeceased her in 1964. She worked as a clerk in sales at K-Mart in Martinsville and resided at Riverside Health Care since May 16, 2001. She was a member of Welcome Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Knick of Danville and Annie Hall of Charlottesville; one son, James Oliver Gauldin Jr. of Danville; five sisters, Odell Jones of Farmville, Josie Koger of Danville, Mary Fulbright, Ruth Mangrum and Frances Owen, all of Newport News; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one brother, William Davis and one sister, JoAnne Pierce.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Hussey officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Chapel and other times at 4783 Riverside Drive, Market Basket Trailer Park, Lot 3.

Charles Grogan

DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Conston Grogan, 63, of 180 Lamberth Drive, Lot 11, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at the residence after five years of declining health.
Born May 31, 1938, in Martinsville, he was a son of Robert Grogan and Alice Gibson Grogan, who survive.
He was married to Lula Laws Grogan, who survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He worked the last three years with Name Brand Sewing Machines in Reidsville, N.C. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his parents and wife, include one brother, James E. Grogan of Bristol.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Robert L. Vermillion officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
