Annie Robertson

DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Mayhew Robertson, 81, of 305 Skylark Drive, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 4, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Roscoe A. and Nannie Kates Mayhew.
She was married to Raymond L. Robertson, who predeceased her and she was a member of Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond B. Robertson and Roscoe D. Robertson, both of Danville; two daughters, Nannie G. White of Danville and Doris O. Long of Eden, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Hayes McConner officiating. Interment icon will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden.
Viewing will be held from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family will be at the residence.

Claiborne Scruggs

SALEM, Va. - Archie Claiborne Scruggs, 80, formerly of Gretna, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Salem.
Born Oct. 10, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Presley A. Scruggs and Myrtle Love Scruggs.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II. He was retired from Burlington Industries and was a musician.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers, Lawton Scurggs and Leslie Scruggs.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Lynn Marstin officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Love Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home in Gretna.
Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles ‘Don’ Sams

DANVILLE, Va. - Charles F. “Don” Sams Sr., 72, of 186 Cumberland Drive, died Friday, July 20, 2001 at Piney Forest Health Care.
Born April 5, 1929, in Schoolfield, he was the son of William Frank Sams and Viola Laprade Sams.
He was married to Jean Warner Sams, who survives. He was retired from Goodyear. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 647, S.H.S. Mens Breakfast Club and Schoolfield Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Cheryl Lynn Sams of Amelia and Patti Sams Clifton and husband Dr. Jeffrey Allen Clifton of Danville; one son, Charles Frank Sams Jr. and wife Dr. Marian Lavelle-Sams of Roxboro, N.C.; one sister, Billie S. Sparrow of Waldorf, Md., and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Turbyfill and the Rev. Dr. John LaRue officiating. Interment icon will follow at Mt. View. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 1097.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests that memorials be made to Schoolfield Baptist Church or D.L.S.C.

Lutie Clark Simmons

WAYNESBORO, Va. - Lutie Clark Smallwood Simmons, 75, of 204 River Rd., Waynesboro, VA, died Friday, July 13, 2001 at her residence.
She was born June 30, 1926 in Cornwall, VA daughter of Nellie Clark Southers and the late James William Clark.
She lived in Waynesboro for most of her life and in Danville for 20 years. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where she served diligently and faithfully. For years she was employed with the Waynesboro Farm Bureau and she was a counselor at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation center in Fisherville until 1996.
In addition to her father she was preceded in death by her first husband, Nelson Roudnal Smallwood; her second husband, James Richard Simmons; son, Edward Randolph Smallwood; brother, Homer Clark and grandsons, Christopher James Pugh and Justin Allen Simmons.
Survivors include her mother, Nellie Clark Southers of Waynesboro; four sons, Dennis E. Smallwood of Clarksville, James Keith Simmons of Danville, Donald Ray Simmons of Austin, TX and Richard Lee Simmons of Boston, Mass.; two daughters, Joice Faie Weyerman of Middleton, Idaho and Jane Smallwood Pugh of Danville; two brothers, Herman Clark and Ed Clark both of Waynesboro; two sisters, Della McVey of Waynesboro and Edith Simmons of Stuarts Draft; 31 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by Bishop Phil Wagner. Interment icon will follow in Riverview cemetery, Waynesboro, VA.
Active pallbearers will be her grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be her other grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday at McDow Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 1920-H Medical Avenue Harrisonburg, VA 22801, the Hospice of the Shenandoah P.O. Box 215 Fisherville, VA 22939 or the Waynesboro First Aid Crew P.O. Box 1427 Waynesboro, VA 22980.

Marvin ‘Mudcat’ Towler

SANDY LEVEL, Va. -Marvin Thomas “Mudcat” Towler, age 51, of 3421 Yorkshire Drive, Sandy Level died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 30, 1949, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Aylene Barbour Towler of Sandy Level and the late Jackson David Towler. He was a member of New Bethel Church of the Brethren and a machine operator for Ennis Business Forms. Mr. Towler was a charter member of the Scale Rock Sportsman Club and a Lifetime member of the NRA.
In addition to his mother he is survived by a brother Jerry D. Towler and his wife Judy of Danville; nephews, James Towler and Vernon “Chuck” Towler and his wife Amy; a niece Corinna Hodges and her husband Tony.
Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001 at Gretna Burial Park by Rev. Curtis English and Rev. Woodrow Tuck.
The family will receive friends at the residence 3421 Yorkshire Drive, Sandy Level.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Cool Branch Rescue Squad or to New Bethel Church of the Brethren.

Elma Towler

CHATHAM, Va. - Elma Custer Towler, 81, of Chatham, died Thursday, July 19, 2001.
Born April 3, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Luther Custer and Cissie Adkins Custer.
She was married to Stover Henry Towler Sr., who predeceased her. She was a member of Greenbay Christian Church and a home maker.
Survivors include six sons, Cecil Towler and Clyde Towler, both of Gretna, Stover Towler Jr., Tommy Towler and Bobby Towler, all of Chatham, and J.D. Towler of Blairs; three sisters, Cora Keatts and Azie Dixon, both of Chatham, and Lucille Lawson of Richmond; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Melvin David Towler; a brother, Garnett Custer; three sisters, Marie Osborne, Iona Bradshaw and Lois Payne.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Colbert-Moran Chapel with Rudy Hearn, Minister and the Rev. Gene Ashworth. Interment icon will follow in the Wagner Family cemetery.

Andrew L. Walshaw

CHATHAM, Va. - Andrew L. Walshaw, 4568 Toshes Road, Chatham, died July 3, 2001 in Melbourne, Florida. He was a son of the late Edward and Doris Walshaw and was preceded in death by one brother, Horace Walshaw of Chatham.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Walshaw of the residence; one daughter, Kristina and son-in-law Kent Miller; four grandchildren, Matthew, Megan, Brandon, and Kelsey; two brothers, Robert Walshaw of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Eddie Walshaw of Altavista, Va.; one sister, Mary Van Ness of Florida; 26 nieces and nephews; 35 grandnieces and grandnephews; and 16 great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
Services were held in Melbourne, Florida on July 9, 2001 and he was laid to rest at Florida Memorial Gardens.

Raymond White

DANVILLE, Va. - Raymond Lee White, 45, of 515 Scales St., died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 27, 1956, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James White and Olivia Dabney White, who survives.
He was married to Cheryl White, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, include one daughter, Shaleta Mitchell-Thomas; two stepdaughters, Antoinette Williams and Candance Williams; one stepson, Quinton Williams, all of Danville; four sisters, Vickie Law, Tammy White, Angela White and Alisa White, all of Danville, and one brother, Terry White of Danville.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Vance Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Dickerson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mary ‘Della’ Williams

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary O. “Della” Williams, 66, of 125 Princess Drive, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 21, 1935, in Danville, she was a daughter of Charlie Lee Beard and Elease B. Beard.
She was married to James V. Williams, who survives. She was a shift worker for Richmond Cedar Workers and was mother of the church at St. John’s One Accord Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one son, Vernon L. Williams of Riverdale, Ga.; four daughters, Mary D. Williams of Newport News, Pearl W. McCain of Blairs, Almeter W. Flowers of Morrow, Ga. and Sabrina Williams of Burlington, N.C.; eight brothers, Jesse Beard of Forestville, Md., Earl Beard of Landover, Md. and James A. Beard, Jasper Beard, Lawrence Beard, Joe S. Beard, Dennis C. Beard and Jerry W. Beard, all of Danville; five sisters, Esther B. Stephens, Angelene James and Helen D. Gunn, all of Danville, Gladys C. Harris of Ruffin, N.C. and Judith Totten of Yanceyville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Sinai Holiness Church. Interment icon will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
The viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday.
The family will be at the residence.

Hildridge Wilson

DANVILLE, Va. - Hildridge G. Wilson, 92, of 1429 Vance St., died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 17, 1909, in Danville, she was a daughter of Issac Gausney and Mary Lawson Gausney.
She was married to Charlie Taylor Wilson, who predeceased her. She was a receptionist for Glenwood Recreational Center and was a member of Vance Street Baptist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her generation. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vance Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Dickerson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
Viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence.
