James Younger
DANVILLE, Va. - James Howard Younger, 78, of 2002 N. Main St., died Friday, July 20, 2001, at the residence.
Born June 10, 1923, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Doc Younger and Edna Wilson Younger.
He was married
to Virginia Hatchett Younger, who predeceased him, and he was employed with the City of Danville Department of Public Works before his retirement.
Survivors include one son, Anthony Howard Younger of Danville; one stepdaughter, Thelma Elizabeth Moore of Danville; five grandchildren; and 12 great- grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peaceful Zion, 501 Industrial Ave., with Bishop Peggy J. Motley officiating and eulogist Pastor Stella Reid. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.

Ruby Adkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Mae Law Adkins, 90, of 659 Jackson Heights, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after seven years of declining health.
Born May 23, 1911, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of John Wesley Law and Myrtle Alison Minter Law.
She was married
Dec. 25, 1940, to George Burton Adkins, who predeceased her. She was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for the adult women’s class and a member of W.M.U. She was a resident of the Mount Hermon community for 60 years and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Johnny Burton Adkins of Stockbridge, Ga.; one daughter, Dorothy A. Wallace of Woodland, N.C.; one brother, Ray Law of Eden, N.C.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one daughter, Elsie Myrtle Adkins.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Don Davidson, the Rev. Johnny B. Adkins and the Rev. Daryl Law officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Manly Hargrave Aylor Sr.
GRETNA, Va. - Manly Hargrave Aylor Sr., age 95, of Gretna died Thursday, July 26, 2001, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born August 11, 1905, in Chatham, Va., he was a son of the late Robert E. Lee Aylor and Ella Vaden Aylor. He was predeceased by four brothers, Robert Aylor, G. Vaden Aylor, Stanton Aylor and J. Garnett Aylor. Mr. Aylor was a graduate of the University of Virginia and received his Masters degree from VPI. He was an Army veteran of World War II having served in the European Theater with the rank of Captain. Mr. Aylor was past owner of Aylor Insurance Company for fifty years, a member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna, a charter member of the Gretna Chamber of Commerce, a member of American Legion Post 232, a member of Anderson Masonic Lodge 258 AF and AM, was the Chairman of the Roanoke River Association for twenty years, working with Appalachian Power Company in construction of Smith Mountain Dam.
He is survived by his wife Alice Gay Aylor of the residence; two sons, Manly H. Aylor, Jr. of Roanoke, and Tommy Aylor and his wife Linda of Gretna; one brother, Raymond Aylor of Charlottesville; two sisters, Carrie Tate Aylor of Chatham and Louise A. Montague of Montgomery, AL; two grandchildren, Richard Aylor and Carter Aylor, both of Roanoke.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by the Rev. W. D. Lilly. Burial with military honors by VFW Post 4165 and DAV Chapter 46 will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 212 Peoples Supply Road, Gretna.

DANVILLE, Va. - Lucille Carter Breakley, 93, of 412 Farrar St., died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born April 9, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Nathaniel Carter and Anna Carter.
She was married
to Ottris Thomas Breakley, who predeceased her. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
Survivors include three daughters, Georgia V. Breakley and Clarice B. Kelly, both of Danville and Jimmiree Breakley of Penns Grove, N.J.; one son, Bonnie Lee Breakley of Danville, and a number of grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Robert N. Logan Sr.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Edward Pope officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Malcolm Bell
DANVILLE, Va. - Malcolm Leroy Bell, 66, of 226 Sylvan Road, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 10, 1933, in Benson, N.C., he was a son of John Henry Bell and Mattie White Bell.
He was married
to Ruth Bell, who survives. Before retirement he was employed by City of Danville Public Works.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Malcolm Bell Jr. of Norfolk and Douglas Joe Bell of Danville; two brothers, John Bell of Fayetteville, N.C., and Delmon Bell of Washington; four sisters, Shirley Mixson of New York City, Iola Austin and Carolyn Bell, both of Baltimore and Mary Moore of Joppa, Md.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terry Echols officiating. Interment
will follow at the Danville Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Lena Bailey
DANVILLE, Va. - Lena Saunders Ferguson Bailey, 92, of 391 Lemon Lane, Callahands Hill, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at the residence.
Born July 30, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Raleigh and Mary Edna Fitzgerald Saunders.
She was married
to Lloyd Ferguson and George Bailey, both predeceased her. She was a member of Mount Freeman Baptist Church and the Missionary Society.
Survivors include four daughters, Evelena Smith, Nannie Holt Hamlett, Julia Graves and Edna Mae Harris, all of Danville; one son, William “Dean” Ferguson of Danville; one brother, Tommy Saunders of Ringgold; one sister, Gladys Dixon of Philadelphia, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Freeman Baptist Church with the Rev. James C. Dillard officiating. Interment
will follow at Saunders Family cemetery in Ringgold.
The viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Sunday at L.H. Brooks and Bro. Funeral Home.

Charles Bickford
DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Randall Bickford, 85, of 224 Lamberth Drive, died July 28, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and three days in the hospital.
Born Oct. 3, 1915, in Pike County, Ky., he was the son of Charles A. Bickford and Maude Lee Compton Bickford.
He was married
to Wanda Adkins Bickford, who survives. He moved to Danville in 1957 from Pike County, Ky. and was a coal miner having retired from District 20 of the United Mine Workers. He later retired from the Local Union No. 491 of Plumbers and Steam Fitters in Roanoke where he was a welder and pipe fitter. He was a member of Riverview Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He was recognized by the Governor of Kentucky as an Honor Kentucky Col. He was a Master Mason and belonged to Lodge No. 375 of F&A Masons and Royal Arch No. 133, both in Pikeville, Ky.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Katherine F. Bickford of Danville and Rosely B. Griffin of Clarksville; three sons, Eugene Darryl Bickford, Brice R. Bickford and Charles N. “Chuck“ Bickford, all of Danville; three sisters, Eloise B. Russell of Rogersville, Tenn., Gayle Bickford of Marietta, Ohio and Dorothy B. Cooksey of Silver Bay, Minn.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Paul Bickford.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Greeson officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Guy Bradner Jr.
CHATHAM, Va. - Guy Woodrow Bradner, Jr. age 56 of 601 Beverly Heights Rd. Chatham, Virginia died Tuesday July 24, 2001 at the residence. Mr. Bradner was born December 27, 1944 in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late Guy Woodrow Bradner and is survived by his mother Lillian Dalton Bradner. He is also survived by two sons, G.W. Bradner of Lynchburg and Barry Bradner of Chatham; one daughter, Sherry B. Tosh of Chatham; four sisters, Janice B. Simpson of Callands, Judy B. Conner of Chatham, Jo Ann Bailey of Gretna and Bonnie B. Moore of Gretna; and three grandchildren, Brian Collins, Amber and Nathan Tosh. He was predeceased by one brother, Steven Bradner.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday July 26, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. from the graveside at Greenbay Christian Church cemetery by Mr. Curtis English. Jerry Cardwell
DANVILLE, Va. - Jerry Cardwell, 57, of 100 Cardwell St., died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 26, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Cardwell, who survives, and Ruth Brown Cardwell.
He was married
to Betty Logan Cardwell, who survives. He was an employee of Dan River Mills for many years.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and father of Danville, include four daughters, Lara Lee Cardwell of Washington, Sara Lynette Moore of San Diego, Kristina Renee Cardwell of Germany and Sharon Denise Cardwell of Norfolk; three sons, Jerry Cardwell Jr., Darrell Lamont Cardwell and Michael Anthony Cardwell, all of Danville; four sisters, Mary Ann Giles, Sherdine Bradshaw, Linda Lee Jefferson and Robin D. Hariston, all of Danville; four brothers, George Cardwell Jr. of Cleveland and Linwood Cardwell, Ramzie Cardwell and Ruben T. Cardwell, all of Danville; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his mother, by two sisters, “Sweet Baby” Cardwell and Sharon Annette Cardwell and one brother, Jimmy S. Cardwell.

Harry Christianson Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Christianson Jr., 91, of 664 Jackson Heights, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the residence.
Born Nov. 17, 1909, in Danville, he was a son of Harry Christianson Sr. and Lottie Moxley Christianson.
He was married
Dec. 23, 1941, to Louise Jakeman Christianson, who survives. He lived most of his life in the Danville area, worked with Broody Candy Company and was co-owner of H.P. Food Store before his retirement. He was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church and he served in the U.S. Army during World War II for four years with 18 months in Italy on the Beach Head of Anzio, where he received the Bronze Star for Bravery.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one brother, Nolan H. “Pete” Christianson of Shady Grove and two sisters, Pearl C. Fuller of Atlanta and Evelyn C. Holland of Henderson, N.C.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Jonathan Leon Bennett officiating. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 1097.

Josephine DeCarbo
DANVILLE, Va. - Josephine Parola DeCarbo, 93, of 204 Elon Place, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born May 15, 1908, in Sharon, Penn., she was the daughter of Paul Parola and Claudia Grande.
She was married
to Alfred M. DeCarbo, who predeceased her in 1964. She was a teacher for the Neshannock school system for 26 years, she attended St. Camillus Roman Catholic Church and she graduated from Edinboro University in 1928.
Survivors include one son, Alfred M. DeCarbo of Palm Harbor, Fla.; one daughter, Judy Wimer of Danville; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Camillus Church with the Rev. Robert Miller officiating. Interment
will follow at St. Vitus cemetery.
