David Garland
DANVILLE, Va. - David Sidney Garland, 66, of 130 Hughes St., died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 1, 1935, in Milton, N.C., he was the son of James Arthur Garland and Cosy Lee Garland.
He worked for Southern Processors Inc. before his retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Rosa Gallant of Belmont, N.C. and Barbara Gallant of Danville, Va.; three sons, David Garland Jr. of Milton, N.C., Anthony Garland of Ringgold and Ronnie Sidney Garland of Yanceyville, N.C.; five sisters, Hattie Farmer, Carrie Jones, Corine Jones and Lucille Gwynn, all of Danville and Iola Carter of Louisville, Ky. and two brothers, William Garland of Danville and Thomas Garland of Reidsville, N.C.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Edward Breedlove officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.

Evelyn Garrett
DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn Hull Steele Garrett, age 91, formerly of 325 Linden Drive and Stratford House, died on July 27, 2001, at the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born on September 23, 1909, in Tazewell, Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles Walter and Clara Vawter Hull Steele.
Attending the College of William & Mary for three years, she met and married
Albert Earle Garrett, Jr., on March 29, 1929. Evelyn Garrett was graduated from Emory & Henry College in 1930.
During World War II Evelyn joined the war effort by serving in the nurses aid program of the local American Red Cross.
Mrs. Garrett was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Wednesday Club, the Reading Group of the Wednesday Club, Friends of the Library, and the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
Her extended family will always remember her stoic personality, her liberal beliefs, and her intelligence as shwn through her insatiable habit of reading. Any book that passed near her hands, whatever the subject, was picked up and read by her. She was the family philosopher.
Evelyn Garrett was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Earle Garrett, Jr., a brother Andrew Jackson Steele, one sister Josephine Kelly Steele, one son Thomas Blackwell Garrett II, and one daughter Evelyn Hull Garrett Bowyer.
Survivors include one sister Mary Ellen Steele Naff; three children: son Albert Earle Garrett III and daughter Clara Steele Garrett Fountain, both of Danville; daughter Carolyn Coleman Garrett Bouldin of Winston-Salem, NC; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at Highland Burial Park at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 30, 2001, led by Rev. Jonathan L. Bennett. The family will receive friends in the Evergreen Room at Stratford House on Sunday night, July 29, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. At other times the family will be in residence at the home of Clara Fountain, 107 Canterbury Road.

Carl Guthrie
SALEM, Va. - Carl Michael Guthrie, 43, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center.
Born Aug. 16, 1957, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Nancy Taylor Guthrie, who survives.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Chatham, include one brother, Andrew Guthrie Jr. of Rustburg and two sisters, Barbara Clay of Chatham and June Haley of Hurt.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
will follow at Sheva Church of Christ cemetery.

Effie Parcell Hall
DANVILLE, Va. - Effie Parcell Hall, 93, of 1224 Richmond Blvd., died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at her residence after three years of declining health.
Born June 6, 1908, she was a son of the late William Parcell and the late Mattie Evans Parcell.
She was married
to R. Cabell Hall, who died April 18, 1983. They were married
in November of 1926.
Mrs. Hall had lived all of her life in Danville and the Blairs Community of Pittyslvania County. Mrs. Hall worked for Dan River Inc. in the sewing room in the Schoolfield Division as a seamstress for over 35 years. Mrs. Hall was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Arvin E. and Patsy Wright Hall, Sr. of Danville.
She is also survived by one sister, Mary P. Ferrell of Danville; one brother, Cloris P. Coleman of Danville; one grandson and his wife, Arvin E. (Butch) and Peggy B. Hall; one granddaughter, Amy Hall Ramsey; one great-granddaughter, Anne Marie Hall; and one great-grandson, Mark Andrew Hall.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack Waddell.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 173 Northwest Blvd.

Annie Hodnett
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Annie Pruett Wiles Hodnett of 1410 Berry Hill Road, South Boston, Va. died July 30, 2001 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Halifax County, Va. on May 23, 1910 and was 91 years old.
She was the daughter of Mr. Morton Pruett and Mrs. Nettie Guthrie Pruett and was married
first to Johnnie James Wiles then to Harvey Hodnett. She was a member of Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church and a former nurse at the South Boston Hospital.
Mrs. Annie Pruett Wiles Hodnett is survived by: one daughter Ann Wiles Lewis Tingen of South Boston, Va.; two grandsons Barry T. Lewis and James A. Tingen; two great-grandchildren Ashely E. Lewis and Paul T. Tingen; one sister Catherine P. Carpenter of Keeling, Va.
She was preceded in death by three sisters Pattie P. Davis of Keeling, Va., Thelma P. Hudgins of Keeling, Va. and Imogene P. Henderson of Flat Rock, Michingan and two brothers Morton Pruett, II of Flat Rock, Michigan and Willie Pruett of Sutherlin, Va.
Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Pruett Wiles Hodnett will be held Thursday, August 2, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will take place in Pruett Family cemetery at Sutherlin.

Earl Holley
DANVILLE, Va. - Earl Kenneth Holley, 74, of 420 Pinecrest Drive, died July 27, 2001, at the residence after one year of declining health.
Born Oct. 11, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Thomas C. Holley and Cora Gammon Holley Edwards.
He was married
to Beatrice Gray Holley. Mr. Holley had resided in Danville his entire life. He was a clerk with the United States Postal Service for many years before retirement and associated with Acosta Sales Inc. prior to his declining health. Mr. Holley was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Callands. He served on the Board of Directors of Danville Postal Credit Union and was a member of the Ballard Pruitt Post 647 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Navy.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Danville, include three daughters, Becky H. Bennett and husband Roy of Ringgold, Debbie H. Powell of Greensboro, N.C. and Amy C. Holley of the home; four grandchildren, Melissa B. Aherron and husband Darrell of Easley, S.C., Sharron P. Brady and husband Todd of Cascade, Holley B. McCann and husband Randy of Ringgold and Dustin B. Powell of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Helen H. Anderson of Richmond; and four great-grandchildren, Jordan Brady, Bennett McCann, Jackson Aherron and Kayle Brady.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers, Randy Holley and Gilmer Holley and one sister, Stella H. Adkins.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Gray and the Rev. Wayne Crews officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

DANVILLE, Va. - Anna Marie Edmunds Jeffries, 47, of 261 Williams Court, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 22, 1953, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Mary Belle Crews Edmunds and Ferrell Edmunds Sr.
She was married
to Floyd Jeffries, who survives. She was a member of New Arbor Baptist Church and worked at WalMart.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Danville, include one daughter, Santa Maria Edmunds of Danville; three brothers, James Edmunds of Sutherlin and Ferrell Edmunds Jr. and Willie Earl Edmunds, both of Danville; five sisters, Mary E. Whitlock of Springfield, Mass., Nancy Greene, Gracie L. Edmunds, Ernestine Hamlett and Brenda F. Hamlett, all of Danville; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at New Arbor Baptist Church with the Rev. Nelson Stamps officiating. Interment
will follow at New Arbor Baptist Church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Lee Jennings, 63, of 308 Ottawa Court, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 7, 1937, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Posey Leftwich and Lula Thornton Leftwich.
She was married
to George Jennings, who survives. She was an employee of Bassett Furniture Company for many years.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include five daughters, Sherry Walton, Lisa Witcher, Pamela Fitzgerald, Cathy Jennings and Karen Brooks, all of Danville; four sons, Gary Jennings, Jerry Jennings, Michael Jennings and Donald Jennings, all of Danville; two sisters, Eva Day of Greensboro, N.C., and Mildred Hairston of Cascade; one brother, P.L. Leftwich of Dry Fork, and a number of grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by four sisters, Mae Fannie Morrison, Doris Dixon, Lula Mae Tarpley and Catherine Pritchett, and four brothers, Oscar Leftwich, Goffer Leftwich, James Leftwich and James I. Pritchett.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Apostolic Church, 154 New St., with Bishop Major Hairston officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

DANVILLE, Va. - Howard Taft Jones, 88, of 120 Old Piney Forest Road, Lot No. 12, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 6, 1913, in Bamburg, S.C., he was the son of William Jones and Josephine Thompson Jones.
He was first married
to Irene L. Jones, who predeceased him, and later married
Louise Shelton Jones, who survives. He was a retired supervisor at Dan River Inc. and was a member of Gatewood Spiritual Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three sons, Roy L. Jones, Cecil T. Jones and David T. Jones, all of Danville; two daughters, Evelyn Worley and Janis Hodges, both of Danville; one stepson, Michael Adkins Sr. of Danville; one brother, Grady Jones of Okeechobee, Fla.; one sister, Kerline Merritt of Clearwater, Fla.; eight grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; four great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and first wife, by four brothers and three sisters.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Gentry officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

James Jones Jr.
James Ellis “Deacon” Jones Jr., 78, of 189 Dogwood Lane, died July 30, 2001, at the residence after eight and a half years of declining health.
Born Dec. 21, 1922, in Danville, he was a son of James E. Jones Sr. and Gracie Allen Jones.
He was married
to Mary Taylor Jones, who survives. He lived in Danville his entire life and was a contractor and developer before his retirement and decline in health. He was a member of Jubilee Christian Fellowship and past commander of Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Danville, include two daughters, Linda J. Frazier and Brenda J. Arnn, both of Danville; one son, David L. Jones of Danville; three sisters, Anne J. Stone and Dorothy J. Elliott, both of Danville and Jeanette J. Cocke of Chesapeake; four brothers, the Rev. Bobby L. Jones of Danville, Enoch M. Jones of Houston, Donald D. Jones of Virginia Beach and Leonard Jones of Prospect; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Roy Frazier and the Rev. Scott Frazier officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by American Legion Post No. 325.
