Nathaniel Pope
JAVA, Va. - Nathaniel Pope, 49, of 388 Brownsville Heights, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at the residence. Born Oct. 10, 1951, in Halifax County, he was a son of John W. Pope and Leatrice Pope, who survive.
He was employed at Dan River Mills and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Java.
Survivors, in addition to his father of the residence and mother of Halifax, include one daughter, Catreena T. Walker of Forestville, Md.; one son, Shawand L. Barbour of Java; five brothers, William H. Pope of Temple Hills, Md., John L. Pope of Chatham, the Rev. Edward L. Pope of Hurt, Lynwood Pope of Java and Joseph D. Pope of Lanham, Md.; and two sisters, Janie L. Luck of Nathalie and Barbara P. Jones of Richmond.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Edward L. Pope officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery with military honors performed by V.F.W. Post No. 3165 and D.A.V. No. 46 of Altavista.
A repast will follow the interment in the church fellowship hall.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to 640 Rescue Squad in Java.

Robert ‘Frank’ Pruitt
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert “Frank” Pruitt, 78, of 103 Idlewood Terrace, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at the residence after one year of declining health.
Born Aug. 22, 1922, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of Robert Ford Pruitt and Nellie Evans Pruitt.
He was married
to Opal Powell Pruitt, who survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and landed on the beaches at Normandy on D-Day. He received the Purple Heart as well as a number of other medals. He spent most of his life in Danville and was a long-distance truck driver for McLean Trucking Company for 35 years. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the American Legion.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Cassandra Pruitt Setliff, Brenda Pruitt Dykes and Linda Pruitt Jones, all of Danville; one son, Norman Franklin Pruitt of Lakeland, Fla.; three sisters, Mamie Barbour, Annie Stallings and Elva Welch, all of Danville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Markham officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jeral Ricketts
DRY FORK, Va. - Jeral Keith Ricketts, 52, of 460 Highview Lane, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at the residence after several years of declining health.
Born April 14, 1949, in Danville, he was the son of Paul Z. Ricketts and Mary L. Tarpley, who survives.
He was married
Aug. 15, 1987, to Dorothy Walton Ricketts, who survives. He attended Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, having served in the Vietnam War.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include four sons, Paul K. Ricketts of Chatham, Jeral A. Ricketts and Marvin E. Wilborne III, both of Danville and Mark A. Wilborne of Nathalie; two daughters, Amy R. Newell of Danville and Tracie W. Powell of Collinsville; one sister, Diane R. Cooley of Danville and 12 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilbert Hawks, the Rev. Charlie Cundiff and the Rev. Bennett Shelton officiating. Interment
will follow at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery with graveside military honors performed by American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.

Annie Robertson
DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Mayhew Robertson, 81, of 305 Skylark Drive, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 4, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Roscoe A. and Nannie Kates Mayhew.
She was married
to Raymond L. Robertson, who predeceased her and she was a member of Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond B. Robertson and Roscoe D. Robertson, both of Danville; two daughters, Nannie G. White of Danville and Doris O. Long of Eden, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Hayes McConner officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden.
Viewing was held from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

BLAIRS, Va. - Thomas Stanley Stone, 69, of 118 Kadesh Court, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 11, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Amos Stone and Ruth Stone.
He was an employee of Lorillard until his retirement.
Survivors include five daughters, Barbaretta Polk, Penelope McGhee and Bonnie Akers, all of Danville, Gail Adams of Blairs and Penny Elmore of Greensboro, N.C.; six sons, Thomas Stewart Stone of Maryland, Steve Stone and Taz Lee Stone, both of Danville, Jessie Wayne Stone and Michael Stone, both of Dover, Del. and Christopher Stone of Atlanta; and a number of sisters and brothers.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Letcher Coleman officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Mary Taylor
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Scearce Taylor, 96, of 416 Skyline Ave., formerly of Westover Hills, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 4, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Fletcher Redd Scearce and Nannie Pricie Scearce Scearce.
She was married
to Ernest L. Taylor, who predeceased her July 9, 1966. She worked for Dan River Inc. for 33 years before her retirement in 1970 and was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy T. Reynolds of Danville; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one brother, Norman R. Scearce.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Ira D. Yeatts and the Rev. Joe Beck officiating.

Reva Williams
DANVILLE, Va. - Reva Jean Dennison Williams, 65, of 1219 Jamerson Road, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at the residence.
Born Nov. 13, 1935, in Bulltown, W.Va., she was a daughter of Sylvester Dennison and Ada Herndon Dennison.
She was married
Feb. 23, 1957 to Thomas Glen Williams, who survives.
She lived in the Danville area for the past 30 years. She also lived in West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. She was a graduate of Akron Business College and prior to her retirement she was employed as office manager for Wintrode Enterprises. She served as a volunteer for the Helpline and Doves, and she was a member of the choir at Fairview United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Rosemarie Williams Musselwhite of Greensboro, N.C. and Vera Williams Olympia of Washington; one brother, Kenneth Dennison of Tallmadge, Ohio; two sisters, Ruth Jones and Opal Williams, both of Jefferson, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one brother, William Dennison.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas Barnard, the Rev. Lindwood Daniels and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Evans officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

George Adams Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - George Washington Adams Jr., 82, of 200 Parkway Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center, after one year of declining health.
Born July 31, 1919, in Eden, N.C., he was the son of George Washington Adams Sr. and Flora Lee Jones Adams.
He was first married
to Catherine Atkinson Adams, who predeceased him in 1978 and was married
Aug. 14, 1982, to Clara Gravely Adams, who survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Pacifico during World War II. He was an automobile salesman for Barkhouser Ford and retired from Danville Lincoln Mercury in 1984. He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church and the V.F.W. Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Larry Wayne Adams and David Lee Adams, both of Danville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Mary Barker
SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Mary Whitt Barker, 73, of 7015 Dryburg Road, died July 31, 2001, at Henrico Doctors Hospital.
Born Oct. 1, 1927, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of William A. Whitt and Isabelle Whitt Jackson.
She was married
to Robert Aldridge Barker Sr., sho survives. She was a member of Fork Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Scottsburg, include one daughter, Brenda D. Barker of Scottsburg; two sons, Darryl A. Barker of Scottsburg and Robert A. Barker Jr. of Brookneal; two sisters, Gladys W. Robey of Greensboro, N.C. and Annarene W. Caune of Charlotte, N.C. and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in additino to her parents, by two brothers, Bradley Whitt and William Whitt and two sisters, Florence W. Watts and Eliza W. Dunn.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Jason Murray officiating. Interment
will follow at Oakland cemetery in Scottsburg.

James Brooks
DANVILLE, Va. - James Bernard “Shorty” Brooks, 70, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 29, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert and Thelma Lee Brooks.
He was a construction worker and farmer and attended White Rock Baptist Church in Mountain Hill.
Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn M. Brooks of Naples, Italy; two brothers, William Brooks Sr. of Ringgold and Franklin D. Brooks of Washington, D.C. and two sisters, Beulah Parker of Raleigh, N.C. and Juanita W. King of Indian Head, Md.
The funeral will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday at L.H. Brooks and Bro. Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Curtis J. Strader Sr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden.
