Joseph Chenault
AXTON, Va. - Joseph Homer Chenault, 78, of 816 Peach Orchard Road, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at the residence.
Born May 6, 1923, in Danville, he was the son of Otis Walker Chenault and Etta Rose Fain Chenault.
He was married
to Pansy B. Chenault, who predeceased him. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He lived most of his life in Louisville, Ky., where he was a truck driver for the city and member of Bethel Missionary Church.
Survivors include four sisters, Myrtle Gallop of Bessemer City, N.C., Mildred Liner of Atlanta, Ga.; and Beatrice Gill and Frances Walton, both of Danville.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by two brothers and one sister.
The funeral and entombment will be held in Louisville, Ky.

Mary Cox
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Susan Cox, 101, of 2526 N. Main St., died Saturday, August 4, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after one year of declining health.
Born April 11, 1900, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles Dawson and Mary Betterton Dawson.
She was married
to W.L. Cox, who predeceased her Nov. 22, 1958. She was the oldest living member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. She lived her entire life in Danville. She retired from the Danville City Jail where she worked as a matron.
Survivors include one son, James H. Hall of Mobile, Ala.; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Leemont cemetery with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating.

James Crutchfield
DANVILLE, Va. - James “Jimmy” Garnett Crutchfield, 76, of 125 Annhurst Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after several years of declining health.
Born July 19, 1925, in Pulaski County, he was a son of Marcus Crutchfield and Jodie Bowers Crutchfield.
He was married
July 24, 1948 to Doris Boaze Crutchfield, who predeceased him in February 1998. He lived most of his life in Danville, where he owned and operated Crutchfield Sheet Metal Works. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Seabee’s. He also served aboard ship during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Memorial Post 325, V.F.W. Post 647, D.A.V. Chapter 19 Archer T. Gammon Post and Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Myrtle Thomason of North Dakota and Stella Wilford of Danville.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by two brothers, Luther W. Crutchfield and Clarence C. Crutchfield and three sisters, Margie Carlton, Evelyn Rosebury and Eula Crutchfield.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Lewis Swartzbaugh officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery with graveside military honors performed by American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence of his neice, 188 Clark St. in Ringgold.

Josie Davis
DANVILLE, Va. - Josie Mae Davis, 84, formerly of Abingdon Place Residence for Adults, died Aug. 1, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 7, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Sammy Jones and Lottie Mae Price Jones.
She was married
to Clarence Davis, who predeceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Jones of Blairs and Regina Harris of Danville; three sons, John Lewis Davis of Staunton, Charles Davis of Dry Fork and Richard Wayne Davis of Danville; and two brothers, Thomas Jones of Danville and the Rev. Robert Jones of San Antonio.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethel United Way of the Cross Church with Apostle Joseph Adams officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Shirley Jones in Blairs.

Felix Garner
LONG ISLAND, Va. - Felix William Garner, 74, of 1238 Rabat Road, Nathalie, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at the residence.
Born Dec. 26, 1926, in Halifax County, he was the son of John Thomas Garner and Susie Rice Garner.
He was employed by Metco Metal Company in Lynchburg before his retirement on disability. He was a member of New Shiloh Baptist Church in Nathalie.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary E. Garner and Equilla Garner, both of Nathalie.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at New Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Sylvester Crawley officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

‘Leafy’ Gauldin
DANVILLE, Va. - Minnie “Leafy” Burnette Gauldin, 77, of 1405 Silver Creek Road, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 30, 1924, in the Cascade community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charlie Walter Burnette and Addie Meeks Burnette.
She was married
to Johnny James Gauldin, who survives. She lived most of her life in the Stony Mill community and was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. She worked as a housekeeper for Danville Regional Medical Center.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one daughter, Judy Gauldin Myers of Danville; one son, Johnny Ray Gauldin of Danville; two sisters, Clara Scearce of Danville and Lucille McDaniel of Cascade; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Steve Greer officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Judy Myers, 1480 Silver Creek Road in the Stony Mill community.
The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of choice.

Vernon Geyer Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Vernon Russell Geyer Jr., 80, of 126 Westmoreland Court, Apt. 1, died unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 4, 1921, in Chatham, he was the son of Vernon Russell Geyer Sr. and Henrietta Gould Morris, who survives.
He was married
to Mickey Dawson Geyer, who predeceased him March 18, 1984, and was later married
May 3, 1995, to Anne Thompson Geyer, who survives. He was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy and attended one year at Randolph Macon College before his service in the military. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in the South Pacific. He was a 1949 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a consulting geologist domestically and internationally. In 1951 he purchased property in Markham that became Banister Bend Stock Farm. He was a cattle rancher and sculptor. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chatham, the German Club and Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother of Chatham, include one son, John Vernon Geyer of Java; one daughter, Susan Geyer Meadows of Blairs; two brothers, Kenneth Geyer of Chatham and Cliff Geyer of Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Janice Geyer Graham of Chesapeake and Eunice Geyer Fulcher of Chatham and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by one sister, Beatrice Geyer Redmond.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. John S. Ruef. Interment
will be private.

Oscar Hailey Sr.
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Oscar Cedric “Ced” Hailey Sr., 78, of 2013 Vaughan St. died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 15, 1922, in Halifax County, he was the son of Willie Edward Hailey and Elsie Mae Williams Hailey.
He was married
to Barbara Bennett Hailey, who survives. He was a retired carpenter and foreman at U.S. Plywood and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Alton Baptist Church, American Legion Post 8, NASCAR, and an honorary lifetime member of South Boston Speedway. He played an active and prominent role in building Carter Field and was an ardent supporter of Dixie Youth Baseball.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Mike Hailey of Halifax, Greg Hailey of South Boston and O.C. Hailey Jr. of Coleyville, Texas; one daughter, Elsie Hailey Fitzgerald of Rocky Mount, N.C.; one sister, Dora Lee Moore of Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers, James Hailey of Jacksonville, Fla., Fred Hailey and Bob Hailey, both of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren, three step grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one son, Steve Hailey; one sister, Judy Bowers and one brother, Pete Hailey.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Shelton officiating. Interment
will follow at Alton Baptist Church cemetery, Alton.

Otis Jackson Jr.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Otis T. “Buggs” Jackson, Jr., age 71, of 5237 Sharon Drive, Virginia Beach, VA. died Tuesday, July 31, 2001 in the Sentara Regional Hospital.
He was born in Schoolfield, VA. on May 23, 1930 a son of the Rev. Otis T. Jackson and Nannie Wright Jackson.
Mr. Jackson was a graduate of Schoolfield High School and was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife, Dorothy Reynolds Jackson of the home, a daughter, Terry Jackson Gilliam and her husband David of Chesapeake, VA., two sisters, Odessa Jackson Clifton and Ruby Jackson Harvey both of Danville, four grandchildren, John David Gilliam, Jr., Ashley Lynn Gilliam, Lindsey Ann Gilliam, and Benjamin Adam Gilliam.
In addition to his parents he is perdeceased by three brothers, Carl W. Jackson, Raymond J. Jackson and Robert E Jackson and a sister, Opal Jackson Ashworth.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2001 at 2:00 pm from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Gilbert Hawks. Full Military Honors will be given by the American Legion Post 1097.

GLADYS, Va. - Mary Ethel Logan Jennings, 92, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at the residence.
Born Dec. 14, 1908, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Mary and Clifford Logan.
Survivors include five daughters, Mary Jennings of Orange, N.Y., Albany Jennings of West Orange, N.Y., Emma Massenburg of Roanoke, Odell Moore of Washington, D.C., and Elsie Jones of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; two sons, Wyatt Jennings of Scotch Plains, N.J., and Morrell Jennings Sr. of Hurt; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and one sister, Mattie Sue Logan Bauldwin of Nathalie.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Millstone Baptist Church in Nathalie with the Rev. Chester Spruill officiating. Interment
will follow at Republican Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Nathalie.
The viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
