Howard Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Howard Taft Jones, 88, of 120 Old Piney Forest Road, Lot No. 12, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 6, 1913, in Bamburg, S.C., he was the son of William Jones and Josephine Thompson Jones.
He was first married
to Irene L. Jones, who predeceased him, and later married
Louise Shelton Jones, who survives. He was a retired supervisor at Dan River Inc. and was a member of Gatewood Spiritual Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three sons, Roy L. Jones, Cecil T. Jones and David T. Jones, all of Danville; two daughters, Evelyn Worley and Janis Hodges, both of Danville; one stepson, Michael Adkins Sr. of Danville; one brother, Grady Jones of Okeechobee, Fla.; one sister, Kerline Merritt of Clearwater, Fla.; eight grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; four great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and first wife, by four brothers and three sisters.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Gentry officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Michael Adkins Sr., 2721 Kentuck Road.
Clyde Martin
FIELDALE, Va. - Clyde William Martin, 55, of 417 10th St., died Aug. 2, 2001, at the residence.
Born June 27, 1946, in Henry County, he was a son of Ernest Martin and Evelyn Martin.
He was married
to Joan Martin, who survives. He was an employee of Fieldcrest Cannon in Fieldale for 20 years before becoming ill. He was a member of Hill Memorial Baptist Church and a volunteer fireman and member of the rescue squad.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Fieldale, include three sons, Lonnie William Martin, Ronnie Lee Martin and Chad Lynn Martin, all of Fieldale; one sister, Earnestine Trail of Ridgeway; two brothers, Daryle Martin and Buford Martin, both of Martinsville; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Daniel Martin and one granddaughter.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Rodney Houston officiating. Interment
will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services and other times at the residence.

Gladys Murphy
DANVILLE, Va. - Gladys Hopkins Murphy, 78, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Outlook Pointe, 432 Hermitage Drive.
Born March 7, 1923, in the Stokesland community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lemuel Hopkins and Lindy Setliff Hopkins.
She was married
to Vernon Eugene Murphy, who survives. She had lived in Danville all of her life and at 211 Winstead Drive for many years. She worked as a beautician and was a homemaker. She was a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church and was a choir member.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Outlook Pointe, include two sons, Carlton Murphy of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Douglas Murphy of Shelby, N.C.; one sister, Phoebe Boulware of Danville and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two brothers, Green Hopkins and Sephus Hopkins.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Daniel Lackey and Pastor Austin Merricks officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at Outlook Pointe, Room 227.

Ruby Peay
RICHMOND, Va. - Ruby Dooley Peay, 91, of Richmond, formerly of Danville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 5, 2001.
She was the widow of Carl and is survived by three children, June P. Bookman, and her husband Buck of Richmond: Nan P. Cullop and her husband Bobby of Midlothian: William W. Peay and his wife, Bobbie of Silver Springs, Md.: 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 4 great great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Peay was a lifetime member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church in Danville and a member of Ramsey United Methodist Church in Richmond. She was a member of the Eastern Star Kaufman-Brydon Chapter # 87.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M., Monday, August 6, 2001 at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel at 6900 Hull Street Rd. in Richmond. The family also will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service which will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2001, 1:00 P.M. at Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church. Rev. Gary Milstead and Rev. Joseph Winfree will be conducting the services. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Loretta Proctor
CASCADE, Va. - Loretta Lucille Dawson Proctor, 70, of 133 Black Bird Place, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Oct. 7, 1930, in Blakesburg, Iowa, she was the daughter of John Dawson.
She was married
to Lester Isaac Proctor, who predeceased her June 1990. She had lived in the Danville community since 1971 and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Charles W. Proctor of Roanoke; three daughters, Willa D. Proctor of Ottumwa, Iowa, Brenda S. Exum of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Alberta L. Van Allen of Danville; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Joseph Robertson
DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph W. Robertson, 93, of 377 Wendell Scott Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 30, 1907, in Danville, he was the son of William Robertson and Lizzie Waller Robertson.
He was married
to Florence Redd Robertson, who predeceased him. He was a member, deacon and trustee of North New Hope Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Male Chorus.
Survivors include one son, William Robertson of Philadelphia; three daughters, Nannie Myers and Frances Logan, both of Danville, and Juliette Robertson of Washington; one sister, Hattie Carter of Whitmell; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at North New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. W.D. Smith officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

Doris Lee Guill Rodden
WILMINGTON,Del. - Doris Lee Guill Rodden, age 82 of Wilmington, died Thursday, August 2, 2001 after a brief illness. Mrs. Rodden was a native of Ringgold, VA where she attended Averett College. She was a homemaker and also volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church in Newport. Mrs. Rodden loved animals and often cared for strays. She enjoyed gardening with her husband and growing, arranging and pressing flowers. She was a loving wife and mother who cared deeply for her friends and relatives, both in Wilmington and Danville.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Forrest H. Rodden; her son, Forrest David Rodden of Cherry Hill, NJ; her granddaughter, Laura Alison Frank of Discovery Bay, CA; and her sisters, Jessie Birtley of Deland, FL and Jean Powers of Danville, VA.
Funeral services will be 11:45 am Monday, August 6 at the Chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, N. DuPont Hwy, New Castle, where visitiation will be from 11:00 am until service time. Interment

Clara Schott
RAYTOWN, Mo. - Clara A. Schott, 81, formerly of Leavenworth, Kan., died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Born Jan. 24, 1920, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Joseph Leonard and Bertha May Arnold.
She was married
Jan. 11, 1957, to Elmer Conrad Schott, who predeceased her Feb. 15, 1965. She worked for more than 23 years as a food service supervisor at Dwight D. Eisenhower V.A. Hospital in Leavenworth, Kan., before her retirement in 1979. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, former member of Trinity Lutheran Church, member of the Eagles and the Leavenworth Kitchen Band.
Survivors include one daughter, Ramona Walthall Landreth of Raytown; three sisters, Evelyn M. Hoover of Danville, Va., and Tiny Tipton Hill and Winnie Mae Smith, both of Springfield, Va.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two sisters, Annie E. Hoover and Gladys V. Moore, and three brothers, Noah L., Joseph A. and William “Tom” Arnold.
The funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapel. Interment
will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.
The visitation will be held 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

William Seay
GERMANTOWN, Md. -William Maurice Seay, 66, of 20559 Summersong Lane died Aug. 2, 2001, at Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C. after declining in health since Jan. 2001.
Born March 26, 1935, in Tennessee, he was the son of Leonard Seay and Lila Maude Gentry.
He was married
to Heather Ann Huggins Seay, who predeceased him. He lived in Maryland for the past 14 years. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Master Sargent in 1997, after 24 years of service. He was a member of the United Church of Christ Seneca Valley, Germantown.
Survivors include one brother, David Charles Seay of Ringgold, Va.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Carolyn L. Roberts officiating. Interment
will follow at a later date at Arlington National cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Martha Raye Childress Snead, 58, of 1880 Franklin Turnpike, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at the residence after declining in health since 1998.
Born June 3, 1943, in Charlotte County, she was the daughter of Carey Clinton Childress and Fannie Hopkins Childress.
She was married
July 5, 1977, to Jimmie Ollie Snead Sr., who survives. She resided in the Danville area since 1977 where she was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three sons, Albert Clinton Biagioni Sr. and Jimmie Ollie Snead Jr., both of Danville, and Randolph Scott Biagioni of Pueblo, Col.; two brothers, Walter Clinton Childress of Valdese, N.C., and Jimmy Childress of Thamasville, N.C.; six sisters, Linda Faye Brady and Collen Alford, both of Thomasville, N.C., Geraldine Joyce of High Point, N.C., Peggy Long of Trinity, N.C., Thelma Holdren of Fla. and Delores Howard of Gloucester; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

DANVILLE, Va. - Julia Robertson Whitlow Tolley, 82, of 625 Westover Drive, died Friday night at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health.
Born Aug. 27, 1918, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of Laurina and Ewell Robertson.
She was first married
to William H. Whitlow, who predeceased her in 1968, and later married
John M. Tolley, who also predeceased her. She worked as a weaver in Dan River Mills for more than 20 years. She was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary W. Pruitt of Martinsville and Peggy Pugh of Danville; one son, Benjamin Whitlow of Danville; one sister, Fannie B. Morris of Rocky Mount; one brother, Russell Robertson of Springfield; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husbands, by one son, Ted W. Whitlow.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Johnny Gentry officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Peggy Pugh, 1469 Blair Loop Road.
