CHATHAM, Va. - Edna East Townsend, 79, of 925 Sheva Road, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 8, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Jefferson East and Ellen Marie Forney East.
She was married
to H. Marvin Townsend, who survives. She was a member of Sheva Church of Christ and was employed by Belk Leggetts for 29 years.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one daughter, Alice Faye T. Wagner of Danville; two brothers, Samuel J. East and Paul B. East, both of Chatham; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one daughter, Linda T. Bowen; two brothers, Harry East and John David East, and five sisters, Ora E. Perdue, Gladys E. Lewis, Cora Barbour, Ruth Scruggs and Bertha East.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sheva Church of Christ with Ministers J. Michael Stephenson and Larry L. Owen officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Sheva Church of Christ and other times at the residence.

Harry Walton
CHATHAM, Va. - Harry Hansel Walton, 72, of 1228 County Road, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at the residence.
Born May 12, 1929, in Covington, he was the son of Otis Walton.
He was married
to Dora Talbard Walton, who survives. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was wounded in the Korean War. He was a construction worker.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Danville, include one son, Barry Hammock of Danville and five grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating.
The family will receive friends at 87 Bishop Ave.

Betty Watson
DANVILLE, Va. - Betty B. Watson of 610 Parker Road died Friday night at the Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born September 29, 1937 in Pittsylvania County. She was the daughter of the late Moses and Ollie Burnette. She was married
to David L. Watson on July 18, 1959, who survives. She was employed by the Disston Company for 33 years and was a member of the Light House Bible Church.
In addition to her husband survivors include two sisters and brother-in-laws, Nancy and Junior Ketchum, Sandra and Larry Gray. Two nieces, Susan and Jennifer Ketchum. Three nephews, Johnnie Faw, Jr. and his wife Amber, Brandon and Dustin Gray. One great nephew, Braden Faw & special friends Earl & Dot Goad, Imogene Stevens, Terry Haraway, Tammy Harris, Carleen Wilson, Tammy Kalz, The Senior Citizens Center, one special cousin Vernice Barts, her high school friends “The Lunch Bunch.“
Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. W.L. Wade, the Rev. Paul Ray and the Rev. Glen Gentry. Interment
will be in Mt. View cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday night from 7:00 until 8:30 o’clock. At other times the family will be at the residence, 610 Parker Road. Helen Watson
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Helen Forsyth Watson, 72, of 1193 Kerns Mill Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at the residence.
Born Sept. 18, 1928, in Beuna Vista, Ga., she was the daughter of Charles Howard Forsyth and Willie Mae Forsyth Peters.
She was married
to James Thomas Watson Sr., who survives. She was a member of Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women of the church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Sutherlin, include four sons, James T. “Tommy“ Watson Jr., Gary Bruce Watson, David Ray Watson and Elmer Glenn Watson, all of Sutherlin; four daughters, Phyllis W. Newnam of Cary, N.C., Sue W. Williamson of Sutherlin, Carolyn Fay W. Dodd of Blaris and Barbara W. Price of South Boston; two brothers, James Glenn Forsyth of Jonesboro, Ga. and Richard Michael Forsyth of Milner, Ga.; three sisters, Elizabeth F. Zins of Calahan, Colo., Juanita F. Johnson of Ord, Neb. and Ouida F. Bailey of Jonesboro, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; 4 stepgrandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Bradford and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Danville.

William Watson
SANDY LEVEL, Va. -William Dale Watson, 60, died Aug. 2, 2001, at Elder Care of Franklin County.
Born March 7, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Dorothy Tuck Morris, who survives, and William Espen Watson.
He was married
to Nancy Reynolds Watson, who survives. He was a mechanic and member of Penhook Free Holiness Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Gretna and wife of Callands, include one daughter, Sandra English of Gretna and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by one son, Jason Watson.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Penhook Free Holiness Church with the Rev. Belle Robertson and the Rev. Barry Crumpton officiating. Interment
will follow at Liberty Memorial cemetery.

Frances White
DANVILLE, Va. - Frances Lumpkin White, 87, of Stratford House, 1111 Main St. died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born Feb. 8, 1914, she was the daughter of Hollis Nelson Lumpkin and Ollie Virginia Slaughter Lumpkin.
She was married
July 8, 1943, to George Gales White, who predeceased her. She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church.
She lived most of her life in Danville. She retired in 1974, from the Social Security Administration.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruth L. Anderson of Danville and ann L. Spivey of Yorktown; one brother, Frank M. Lumpkin of Danville.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by four brothers and one sister.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Thomas E. Shepherd officiating.
The family will be at the Ruth L. Anderson residence, 208 Marshall Terrace, Danville.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Hassie Talley Wilbourne, 96, of 3182 Cherry Hill Church Road, died Aug. 2, 2001, at the residence.
Born May 18, 1905, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Jack Almond Talley and Pallie Gravitt Talley.
She was married
to Edgar Marvin Wilbourne Sr., who predeceased her. She was a member of Cherry Hill United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mildred Wilbourne Gurley and Brenda Wilbourne Webster, both of South Boston; two sons, Raymond Brent Wilbourne of South Boston and Dennis Carl Wilbourne of Milton, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Edgar Marvin Wilbourne Jr.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Lewis and the Rev. Bob Huffman officiating. Interment
will follow at Wilbourne Family cemetery.

LONG ISLAND, Va. - Marie Mae Witcher, 54, of 564 Cedar Forest Road, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at the residence.
Born Sept. 24, 1946, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Pride Witcher Sr. and Catherine Rosser Witcher.
She was employed by Lane in Altavista before her retirement due to disability. She was a member of Miracle Revival Fellowship Holiness Church in Long Island where she was the guitarist.
Survivors include one daughter, Catherine Witcher of the residence, three sisters, Louise Stone of Gretna, Janie Davis of Long Island and Betty Moss of Java; five brothers, James Rosser, Elder Edward Witcher, Pride Witcher Jr., Enist Marvin Witcher and Jim Isaac Witcher, all of Long Island; godparents, Frank Miller of Wilmington, Del.; goddaughters, Shana Gregory of Danville, Shannell Moss of Java and Zakiyah Stone of Gretna; godson, Travis Jaleen Davis of Long Island and godsister, Arlene Stone of Hurt.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miracle Revival Fellowship Holiness Church with Bishop Milton Waller officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Joshua Cole Beasley, four months, of 266 Lovell Drive, died Wednesday, August 8, 2001, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesvile.
Born April 14, 2001, he was the son of Rome “Ronnie” Sennett Beasley and Kelly Nicole Crawford Beasley, who survive. He was known to family and friends as “God’s little soldier.”
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include maternal grandparents Charles and Debbie Crawford of Danville and paternal grandparents Dough Smith and Helen Smith of Eden, N.C.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Mitchell Rash officiating.

She was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Person County, N.C.
She was married
to Willie Junious “Buck” Bowes, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and a member of Alton Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Billy James Bowes of Alton and W. Ray Bowes of Annandale; two daughters, Mildred B. Brandham of Wilmington, N.C. and Linda B. Miller of Richmond; two sisters, Edith Bowes of Woodsdale, N.C. and Margie Wilborne of Nashville; four brothers, Jesse Bowes of Roxboro, N.C., Roy Bowes of Bumpass and James Bowes and Golden C. “J.B.” Bowes Jr., both of Alton; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by three sisters, one grandson and three great-great grandchildren.
