Betty Moss
DANVILLE, Va. - Betty “Liz” Scearce Moss, age 69, of 3388 Vandola Road, died early Friday morning August 10, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after ten years of declining health.
Mrs. Moss was born in Danville on January 19, 1932, a daughter of the late Ray W. Scearce and Ocie Plaster Scearce.
She was married
to James Howard Moss who survives.
Mrs. Moss had spent most of her life in the Vandola Road community of Pittsylvania County except for four years she spent in Florida. She was a homemaker and worked for Dan River, Inc., and she was a member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a graduate of Schoolfield High School.
Surivors in addition to her husband of the residence include one daughter: Debbie Moss Hyler of Danville, and one brother: Clyde G. Scearce of Danville, Granddaughters: Beth Hyler, Brooke Hyler and Britney Hyler & a number of Nieces & Nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Myron Bruce & Mr. Jody Pollard. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M., and at the residence at other times.
Julia Price
CALLANDS, Va. - Julia W. Price, 59, of 2512 Water Oak Road, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 20, 1941, in Danville, she was a daughter of Daisy Lee Williams.
She was married
to Julius Neal Price, who predeceased her. She was a supervisor at the Tultex Company in Martinsville before a decline in health.
Survivors include one son, Julius Price Jr. of Danville; one daughter, Beryl B. Price of Callands; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sharon Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald Clarke officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Julius Price, 728 Willowbriar Lane.

William Rea
ST. JAMES, N.Y. - William Rea, formerly of Danville, died July 27, 2001, in St. James as the result of lung disease.
Born March 2, 1936, in Danville, he was the son of Hallie Rea, who survives, and Luther Rea.
He was married
to Dorothy Rea, who survives. He graduated from Washington High School in 1954 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1958. He was a retired broker for Getty Petroleum in Long Island.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Danville and wife, include one sister, Rita Hall of Danville; two daughters, Julie and Monica; one son, Stephen; and one grandson.
Carrington Stowe
DANVILLE, Va. - Carrington Grant Stowe, 51, of 136 S. Hunter St., died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 24, 1950, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Odessa Grant Stowe, who survives, and Major G. Stowe.
He lived most of his life in Danville.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include five brothers, Jim Stowe, Vernon Stowe and Major Stowe Jr., all of Danville, Dennis Stowe of Blairs and Troy Stowe of Drakes Branch and two sisters, Betty Warren and Nancy Oakes, both of Danville.
He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by one sister, Sandra Ferguson.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Frank Swain
PITTSVILLE, Va. - Frank James Swain, 92, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born June 18, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John T. Swain and Emma Divers Swain.
He was married
to Roberta Tuck Swain, who predeceased him. He was a member and deacon of Mountain View Christian Church, a member of American Legion Post No. 232, and a retired employee of the Lane Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, in which he received the Purple Heart and three Battle Stars.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Woodrow Tuck officiating. Interment
will follow at the Tuck Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Virginia Tuck, 181 Bibee Road in Pittsville.

Clara Woodson
DANVILLE, Va. - Clara Hill Woodson, 88, of 2344 Riverside Drive, formerly of Ringgold, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center after three years of declining health and three and a half years at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 21, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Thomas Hill and Florence Henderson Hill.
She was first married
to James M. Sadler, who predeceased her June 24, 1961, and later married
Leo Forest Woodson, who predeceased her Oct. 3, 1981. She was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and lived most of her life in Ringgold. She retired in 1980 from Pittsylvania County Schools, where she worked in the cafeteria.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husbands and parents, by eight brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. A.C. Smith officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Norwood Yeatts
DANVILLE, Va. - Norwood Reeves Yeatts, 80, of 462 Jeanette Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after 18 days in the hospital.
Born Dec. 20, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charles Samuel Yeatts and Addie Clara Stowe Yeatts.
He was married
Feb. 19, 1957, to Louise Hellmann Yeatts, who survives. He lived in Dry Fork before moving to the Danville area in 1965. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force during World War II and held the rank of master seargeant at the time of his retirement. He was a member of American Legion Post 1097 and V.F.W. Post 647. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Maria Y. Mitchell of Danville and Anna Cecilia Yeatts of Raleigh; four brothers, Vernard Yeatts of Gretna, Joseph C. Yeatts and Guy K. Yeatts, both of Danville and Ira D. Yeatts of Chatham; two sisters, Nina Y. Keatts of Axton and Erie Y. Mitchell of Richmond; one son, Donald Yeatts of Florida; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers, the Rev. Charles B. Yeatts and Carl D. Yeatts and three sisters, Thelma S. Yeatts, Edna L. Todd and Doris Y. Wells.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Joey Yeatts, the Rev. Allan Mitchell and the Rev. William Preskitt officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Travis Abbitt
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Travis Monroe Abbitt, 20, of 1507 Friend Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Duke University Hospital.
Born May 8, 1981, he was a son of George D. and Peggy Monroe Abbitt, who survive. He graduated from Wellspring Academy in 2000 and was a member of Dan River Baptist Church where he had been active in the youth group.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include two brothers, Tyler Ian Abbitt of the residence and George Malcolm Abbitt of Halifax; maternal grandparents, Walter D. and Emma S. Monroe of Brookneal and paternal grandmother, Hazel Abbitt of Richmond.
He was predeceased by paternal grandfather, George R. Abbitt.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Dan River Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lewis Wall, the Rev. Paul King and the Rev. Bob Gluhareff. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Coy Arrington
DANVILLE, Va. - Coy Spencer Arrington, infant son of Danny Lee Arrington and Sarah Barker Arrington of 124 Wood Ave., was stillborn Friday afternoon, Aug. 10, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one sister, Stacey Lee Arrington of the residence; paternal grandparents H.L. Arrington and Bonnie Wade Arrington of Pelham, N.C. and paternal great-grandmother Thelma Maxey of Rocky Mount.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Stacy Thomas Barker and Rosa Bond Barker.
The graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating.

Mamie Barber
DANVILLE, Va. - Mamie Jennings Barber, age 77, of 702 Franklin Turnpike, died at her residence Monday afternoon August 13, 2001 after three months of declining health.
Mrs. Barber was born in Danville on May 16, 1924, a daughter of the late John William Jennings and Bettie Warren Jennings.
She married
Claude Turner Barber on November 21, 1944 who survives. Mrs. Barber had spent all of her life in Danville where she worked as a clerk for First Federal Savings & Loan for 21 years before retiring at the age of 60. She was a member of North Main Bapitst Church.
Survivors in addition to her husband of the residence include one daughter and son in law: Brenda Barber Bestler and Dr. J. Michael Bestler of Axton, and three sisters: Mary Dalton of Providence, North Carolina, and Virginia Smith and Shirley Jennings both of Danville.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:00 P.M., and at the residence at other times.

Hope Breedlove
DANVILLE, Va. - Hope F. Breedlove, 67, of 3626 Mount Cross Road, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born March 18, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Marcella Breedlove and Cora Tarpley Breedlove.
She was a laborer for Southern Processors Tobacco Factory and was a member of Tarpley’s Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, George Breedlove of Danville; one brother, Floyd Breedlove of Danville and four sisters, Bendie Hall, Mary White and Mattie Cabell, all of Danville and Della Brown of Buffalo, N.Y.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Tarpley’s Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert L. Divens officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
