Claudia Callahan

ALBANY, N.Y. - Claudia Millner Callahan age 49 of 223 Sheridan Avenue Albany New York 12210, formerly of Danville Virginia, went to be with the Lord on August 12, 2001. She was the daughter of Sarah Oliver Millner of Danville Virginia and the late Claude Millner. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband Tom Callahan, her son Terrell Millner Callahan, her daughter-in-law Danielle Millner Callahan and one granddaughter Devyn Millner Callahan. Six sisters Thenia Waller-Danville Virginia, Reece Price-Danville Virginia, Geneva Williams-Mitchellville Maryland, Patsy Foster-Martinsville Virginia, Jannet Wiggins-Virginia Beach Virginia and Joyce Millner-Danville Virginia. Two brothers James Oliver-Virginia Beach Virginia and Harry Millner Sr.-Danville Virginia, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Funeral services will be at Mt Olivet Baptist Church in Albany New York on Friday August 17, 2001 at 12 noon. Arrangements are provided by Garland Brothers Funeral Home 75 Clinton Avenue Albany, New York 12210.

Ethel Chattin

DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Snead Chattin, 84, of 156 Forestdale Drive, Apt. 104, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 27, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Martin Snead and Alice Long Snead.
She was married to James W. Chattin, who predeceased her Sept. 8, 1985. She lived in Danville most of her life and worked for Dan River Inc. She was a member of Lighthouse Bible Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Crumpton and Gloria Hall, both of Danville; two sons, Daniel Pritchett Chattin of Dry Fork and James W. Chattin Jr. of Danville; two brothers, Harvey Snead and Lawson Snead, both of Danville; one sister, Lucy Wiles of Kernersville, N.C.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by four brothers, Jack Snead, Johnny Snead, Howard Snead and Efird Snead, and one sister, Myrtle Shelton.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. W.L. Wade officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her son, 645 Dover Place in Surry Hills.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Lighthouse Bible Church, 133 Woodberry Drive, Danville, VA 24540 or Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

E.J. Craft Sr.

CHATHAM, Va. - E.J. Craft Sr., 76, of 832 Hickory Road, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 29, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Walter and Nannie Craft.
He was married to Bessie Craft, who predeceased him. He was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church, a United States Army veteran of World War II and a retired truck driver.
Survivors include four sons, Edward Craft of Guam, Robert Craft of Chatham, E.J. Craft Jr. and Charles Craft, both of Danville; two daughters, Ida Harris of Chatham and Eva C. Stone of Chatham; one brother, Cornelius Craft of Chatham; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Howerton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Floyd O. Jones officiating. Interment icon will follow at Craft-Hodnett Family cemetery in Chatham.
The family will be at the residence.

Ida Fleming

POWHATAN, Va. - Ida Marie Fleming, of 2980 Huguenot Trail, died Friday, August 10, 2001.
She was married to Nathaniel Fleming, who predeceased her.
Survivors include three sons, Nathaniel Fleming Jr. of Petersburg, Alarie Fleming of Harrisburg, Penn. and George Fleming of Powhatan County; two daughters, Doris Boyd of Danville and Geraldine Fleming of Powhatan County; one stepdaughter, Lucy Cox of Powhatan County; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hollywood Baptist Church in Powhatan County with the Rev. C.L. Motley officiating. Relatives and friends attending the funeral will assemble at 12 noon Tuesday at the residence. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held one hour prior to the funeral.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the Powhatan Rescue Squad.

John Glass

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - John Joseph Glass, 67, of 1314 Berry Hill Road, died Aug. 15, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 13, 1934, in Halifax County, he was the son of John Presley Glass and Lena Conner Glass.
He was married to Frances Short Glass, who survives. He was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, John Marshall Glass and Paul Anthony Glass, both of South Boston, and Malcolm Forrest Glass of Scottsburg; two sisters, Mary Ann Glass of Warsaw and Nell Glass Conner of Scottsburg; four granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Patrick Henry Boys Home, P.O. Box 1398, Brookneal, Va. 24528.

Julia Graves

DANVILLE, Va. - Julia Saunders Graves, 56, of 110 Lombody Court, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 25, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Robert Saunders and Clara Bennett Saunders.
She was married to Jeremiah Graves, who survives. She was employed by Fieldcrest Mills in Eden, N.C.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include one son, Wayne Graves of Richmond; three sisters, Edna Mae Harris, Nannie Hamlett and Evelena Smith, all of Danville and three brothers, Roosevelt Saunders of Blairs, William Ferguson of Danville and Curtis Ferguson of Baltimore, Md.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Mout Lebanon Baptist Church with the Rev. George Reynolds officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Saunders Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Brian Gunn

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -Brian Deshawn Gunn, 26, of 122 Republic Road, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001 in Newport News.
Born Feb. 8, 1975, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Alfred Wilson and Sandra Gunn Brandon, who survive. He was employed by The Other Moving Company Inc. of Newport News.
Survivors, in addition to his parents of Ringgold, include one son, Diwani Robinson of Newport News and a maternal grandmother, Gracie Gunn of Ringgold.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Kentuck Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Strater officiating. Interment icon will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 193 Gunn-Garland Court in Ringgold.

Bertha Hazelwood

SUTHERLIN, Va. - Bertha Easom Hazelwood, 80, of 1168 Brooklyn Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at the residence of her daughter, 14575 Old Richmond Road in Keeling.
Born March 14, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John D. Easom and Nancy Jennings Easom.
She was married to James Ivory Hazelwood, who predeceased her. She was of the Holiness faith and retired from Dan River Mills Inc. after 48 years of service.
Survivors include two sons, James “Jimmy” Hazelwood and Timothy “Timmy” Hazelwood, both of Sutherlin; two daughters, Winkie Boaze of Sutherlin and Janice Simmons of Keeling; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Loretta Barber officiating. Interment icon will follow at Hazelwood Family cemetery in Halifax County.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home, 2025 N. Main St. in Danville and other times at the residence of her daughter, 14575 Old Richmond Road in Keeling.

Wilson Hubbard

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Wilson J. Hubbard, 73, of Bobby Jones Drive, passed away Sunday night around 11:00 PM. He was undergoing radiation treatments for Cancer, but died from other complications. He was born in Danville, VA November 13, 1927 to the late Herman B. and Ola Scarce Hubbard. Wilson graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy, Oak Ridge, NC and attended the William and Mary Extension of ODU. He was employed by the HQ-HQ BTRY 3D111th VaNG. He served on tour of duty in Germany, and served as a VaNG liaison officer at Ft. Bliss, TX. After retiring from the military he worked in the Department of the Commissioner of Revenue for the city of Portsmouth. He was a member of Westhaven Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, treasurer, and choir member, also a member of American-Fellowship Masonic Lodge #148 and Khedive Temple.
Wilson is survived by his wife Rebecca Hodnett Hubbard; a daughter Emily Huggard Talpas and her husband Jeffrey of Birmingham, Alabama; a son Michael Terry Hubbard and wife Mary Frances of Richmond; a brother H. Berkley Hubbard and wife Peggy; two grandchildren Rachel Talpas and Joshua Michael Hubbard and aunt Geraldine S. Brafford.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday at Westhaven Baptist Church by Rev. W. Thomas Wood with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Masonic and Military Rites. The family received friends in Loving Funeral Home Churchland Chapel Tuesday from 7-8 PM. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations to the elevator fund at Westhaven Baptist Church 4900 Caroline Ave. Portsmouth, VA 23707.

Alean Jackson

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Our beloved sister, aunt, and friend Mrs. Alean Allen Rush Jackson of 22 Parkview Dr., was called to claim her reward in God’s Kindom on August 10, 2001, at the Rehabilitation Center in Rochester, New York.
She was the daughter of the late Henry and Lula Allen. She was united in marriage to Luke Jackson who also preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her memory: 3 loving and devoted sisters, Mrs. Lona (Sher) Hayes of Greensboro, NC, Mrs. Cleddie Potts of Blanch, NC, and Mrs. Monnie Jones of Forest, MD, aunts, uncles, brothers-in-laws, sisters-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, special friend, Nathaniel Taylor, a caring pastor and church family, and a host of loyal friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Alean Allen Rush Jackson were conducted Tuesday, August 14, 2001, 12 noon at Memorial AME Zion Church in Rochester, NY and Thursday August 16, 2001, 2:00 P.M. at River Zion Baptist Church with burial in church cemetery.
The family will be at River Zion Baptist Church Thursday, August 16, 2001, from 11:00 A.M. to 1:45 P.M. for family visitation before funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family will accept donations in memory of Mrs. Alean Rush for a scholarship fund.
Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville, NC, is in charge of arrangements for Mrs. Alean Allen Rush Jackson.

Susie Jay

DANVILLE, Va. - Susie May Smith Jay, 80, of 2256 Robinhood Drive, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at the Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Sept. 29, 1920, in Pittsburg, Penn., she was the daughter of Herbert and Lula Smith.
She spent much of her early life in Milton, N.C. For 25 she was employed by the First Baptist Church of Danville. She was a longtime member of the Bethel United Way of the Cross Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia White of Accomac and Sandra Davis of Lynchburg; two sisters, Luella Long of Baltimore, Md. and Annie Poteat of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Richard Smith of Baltimore, Md. and four grandchildren.
The funeral will by held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bethel United Way of the Cross Church with Bishop Nathaniel Carter of Lynchburg officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Highland Burial Park cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
