Lois Munford
DANVILLE, Va. - Lois Jeffries Munford, 82, of 1102 Greenwood Ave., formerly of 155 Bell Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at the residence after three years of declining health.
Born Dec. 2, 1918, in the Leaksville community of Rockingham County, N.C., she was a daughter of Joseph B. Jeffries and Minnie Troxler Jeffries.
She was married
to Ashby Elie Munford, who survives. She spent most of her life in Danville and worked for Dan River Inc. for nearly 40 years before retiring at 62. She was a member of The Tabernacle.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one daughter, Shirley Lollis of Danville; one brother, Clarence W. Jeffries of Greensboro, N.C.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one son, Billie Munford; three sisters; and two brothers.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at The Tabernacle with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham and the Rev. W. Cleo Hunley officiating. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

Beulah Oakes
SALTVILLE, Va. - Beulah “Lucille” Oakes, 93, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at the Francis Marion Manor in Marion after a brief illness.
Born Jan. 4, 1908, in Bluefield, she was a daughter of John and Ella Wall.
She was married
to Irby Vermillion, Earl Wolfe, and then Gordon Oakes, who all predeceased her. She was a member of Riverview Presbyterian Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was very active in earlier years in the PTA, serving in various official positions. She was a beautician in Bristol, Saltville, and Marion for nearly 50 years before her retirement.
Survivors include three sons, Charles E. Vermillion of Granite Bay, Cal., Edward E. Wolfe of Saltville and William D. Oakes of Danville; three stepsons, Charles Oakes of San Antonio, Elmer Oakes of Portsmouth and Willis Oakes of South Carolina; one sister, Lena Humphries of Anderson, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husbands, by one son, Jimmy Vermillion.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverview Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Cathy Hutton officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville.

Irvin L. Payne
DANVILLE, Va. - Irvin L. Payne died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Riverside Nursing Center.
Born Oct. 31, 1913, in Bartley, W. Va., he was a son of Rosa Adair and William Harvey Payne.
He graduated from Big Creek High School, War, W. Va. in 1933 and graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1937. He was captain of the football team while at Emory & Henry. In 1941, he received his master’s degree from Penn State University.
He taught high school in Lawrenceville, Virginia from 1937 to 1941 where he also was the head football coach. He played and coached football for the Richmond Arrows, a professional team, for several years.
On March 10, 1939, he married
Victoria Mallory, who predeceased him on April 2, 2001.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired as a lieutenant commander in 1945.
In June of 1946, he joined Dan River Inc. as a trainee. He retired as vice president and manager of manufacturing 32 years later.
He was a member of the Danville Golf Club and a former member of the Danville Kiwanis Club, the Young Men’s Club, the Elks Lodge, American Legion Post No. 325 and the Danville Planning Commission.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan P. Glass, and her husband, Ed, of Lake Norman, N.C.; one son, W.F. “Bill” Payne, and his wife, Nancye, of Danville; and two grandchildren, Mallory Glass Hannaford, of Waterford, Conn., and Paul Glass of Charlotte, N.C.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 23, 2001, at Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. James Mathieson.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 304 Dogwood Drive.

Elna Petty
GRETNA, Va. - Elna Meadows Petty, 71, of 407A Vaden Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 18, 1930 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Eddie Lee Meadows and Blanch Davis Meadows. She was married
to John Gilbert Petty, who survives, Sept. 15, 1945.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Irene P. Crider of Gretna and one sister, Pauline M. Moser of Java.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Louise M. Adkins, Anna M. Robertson and Gertie M. Meeks, and two brothers, Charlie Meadows and Edward Meadows.
She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church. She lived in Chatham, where she retired from Leggett’s department store, most of her life. She also lived in Blackstone and retired from Peebles. She lived in Gretna for 14 years.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Interment
will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park in Chatham.

Mary ‘Virginia’ Potter
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary “Virginia” S. Potter, 78, of 1257 Meadowview Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five weeks of declining health and five weeks in the hospital.
Born March 22, 1923, in Chatham, she was a daughter of William Shelton and Lorena S. Shelton.
She was first married
to Vernon F. McDowell, who predeceased her, and later married
to Forrest L. Potter, who also predeceased her. She lived in Danville most of her life and was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Brenda M. Holley of Collinsville, Kathryn M. Hubbard of Danville and Amy Potter Damron of Richmond; two sons, Ronald F. McDowell of Danville and Vernon “Allen” McDowell of Pelham, N.C.; one sister, Jane Shelton Haskins of Danville; three brothers, Larry Shelton of Dry Fork and Gary Shelton and Bobby Shelton, both of Danville; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Barry E. Phillips officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Elizabeth Sharp
DRY FORK, Va. - Elizabeth Stowe Sharp, 76, of 149 Pleasant Gap Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Sharp was born Aug. 7, 1925 in Pittsylvania County. She was the daughter of the late Oscar Raymond Stowe and Bessie Worley Stowe.
She was predeceased by her husband Samuel Furdon Sharp. She was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Debra M. Smith of Dry Fork; one son, Ricky C. Mays of Dry Fork; two stepdaughters, Delores S. Shelton and Phylis S. Smith, both of Danville; one stepson, Timothy Sharp of Danville; one brother, Raymond Lee Stowe of Dry Fork; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. W. Clay Knick officiating. Interment
will be in the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery in Dry Fork.

Ruth Pickrel Shelton
BLUE RIDGE, Va. - Ruth Pickrel Shelton, 87, of 94 Oak Ridge Court, Blue Ridge, Va. and formerly of Danville, died Thursday, August 16, 2001, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born May 8, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Wiley Pickrel and Lula Radford Pickrel. She was married
to the late Oliver Bennett Shelton, she was also predeceased by four brothers, Harold V. Pickrel, Ed Pickeral, Clarence Pickrel, Gene Pickrel and two sisters, Lessie Pickrel and Elma Taylor. Mrs. Shelton was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Curtis Doss of Blue Ridge; one sister, Hazel Pickrel of Blue Ridge; two granddaughters, Martha Doss and Charles Barnitz and Mary and Mark Miner; three great-grandchildren, Katie Miner, Deanna Barnitz and Charles Barnitz II.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Curtis Smith and Dr. Gary Tucker. Interment
will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

Elizabeth Riddick Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Riddick Smith, 83, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001 at her home, 2952 Golf Club Road.
She was born July 27, 1918 in Gurley, Ala., a daughter of Benjamin Franklin Riddick and Mary Foster Riddick.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leon Edgar Smith.
She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church and more recently of Christ Episcopal Church.
She began an acting career in New York City, where she studied at the Irvin School of Dramatic Art.
After her marriage she moved to North Carolina and taught drama at Elon College. She completed her Bachelor of Art degree at Elon College and her Masters Degree of Fine Arts at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
In 1953, she began teaching speech and drama at Averett College, retiring as department chairman in 1983. She was active in local stage, radio and television productions and in many local civic organizations.
In addition to her two daughters, Rebecca Scearce of Dry Fork and Mary Biddlestone of Danville, she is survived by two sisters and two brothers, Minnie Francis Nash of High Point, N.C. and Miriam Dendy, Edwin Riddick and Franklin Riddick of Huntsville, Ala.; four step grandchilren; and 18 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 20 at Christ Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Cleon Ross officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence Sunday from 3-7 p.m.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a favorite church.

William Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - William Henry Smith, 78, of 226 Gray St., died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at the residence.
Born April 28, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Fields Smith and Martha Hereford.
He was married
to Mable Smith, who survives.
He was a driver for Professional Pharmacy and was a member of Loyal Baptist Church where he was on the usher board and in the Georgia Bennet Class and Men Fellowship Club.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Carolyn S. Kernodle of Danville, Patsy S. Parker of Hampton and Phyllis S. Sadler of Martinez, Ga.; one sister, Georgianna Harrison of Danville; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Loyal Baptist Church with the Rev. Lovelle Maxwell officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
The viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
