Thelma Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma Elizabeth Abbott Thompson, age 98, formerly of 102 Wilton Avenue, died Friday evening, August 17, 2001 in the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
She was born on July 19, 1903, in Danville, a daughter of the late James Washington Hobart Abbott and Lucy Ann Moseley Abbott.
Mrs. Thompson was educated in the Danville Public Schools, and was a life-long member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She joined Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in 1991. She married
George Hart Thompson on April 25, 1922. He preceded her in death on June 4, 1984.
She is survived by a daughter, Doris Ann Thompson Jones, and her husband, William Fletcher Jones, Jr.; a son, Robert Allyn Thompson and his wife, Alison Klein Thompson; three grandchildren, Susan Elizabeth Jones Hendricks and her husband, Brett C. Hendricks; William Fletcher Jones, III; Katherine Blair Jones Cesil and her husband, Charles W. Cesil; two great-grandchildren, Frank Wellington Hendricks and Margaret Campbell Hendricks.
Mrs. Thompson was also predeceased by an infant son; two brothers, James W. Abbott, Jr. and Clyde Blackwell Abbott; three sisters, Lena Virginia Montague, Vanassa Dorothy Abbott, Luzanne Dorothy Abbott and a beloved nephew, James Richard Wells.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Doris T. Jones, 133 Westhampton Avenue.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, August 19, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. from Leemont cemetery by the Rev. Jonathan Bennett.

Norman Towler Sr.
GAINESVILLE, Ga. - Norman Earl Towler Sr., 85, of 695 Anderson St., died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at North East Georgia Medical Center.
Born Jan. 28, 1916, in Danville, he was a son of Charles Towler and Myrtle Knick Towler.
He was married
to Margaret Towler, who predeceased him. He was a World War II Navy Seabees veteran and worked most of his life in Washington, Florida, Georgia and Danville. He traveled with AT&T in construction work and was a member of West Main Baptist Church, the Masons and the Shriners.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Joan Steigerwalt of Blairsville, Ga. and Myrtle Jean Castle of Huntington, W.Va.; one son, the Rev. Norman E. Towler Jr. of Palmyra; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Norman E. Towler Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Robert Vaden Sr.
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Robert David Vaden Sr., 77, of 9501 Kentuck Road, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after 15 months of declining health.
Born May 5, 1924, in Sutherlin, he was a son of John Robert Vaden and Mattie Sue Puckett Vaden.
He was married
Oct. 7, 1944, to Pauline Davis Vaden, who survives. He lived his entire life in the Sutherlin community and worked as a tobacco farmer, for a mobile-home-transport service and as an operator of Burger Barn restaurant and Bob’s Store before his retirement. He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include four sons, Robert David Vaden Jr. of Atlanta, Michael Vaden of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Donnie Vaden of Lynch Station and Nick Vaden of Ringgold; one daughter, Paula Barker of Sutherlin; one brother, Gene Vaden of Luling, La.; three sisters, Oneita Munoz of Wetumpke, Ala., Ethel Hite of Danville and Sue Oakes of Blairs; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Interment
will follow with military honors performed by the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence.

Leeland Yates
DANVILLE, Va. - Leeland Alexandria Yates, 78, of 421 Beech Hollow Road, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 9, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Nathan D. Yates and Louise Griffith Yates.
He lived most of his life in Danville and worked for Dan River Inc. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five sons, James Leeland Yates of Mt. Airy, N.C., Donnie Yates, Fred Wayne Yates and Dewey Lynn Yates, all of Greensboro, N.C. and Dennis Yates of Richmond; three daughters, Carolyn Wyatt of Lynchburg, Judy Coward of Danville and Linda Yates of Greensboro, N.C.; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Marvin Yates.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating.

Margaret Blackmon
VIRGILINA, Va. - Margaret Elliott Blackmon, 71, of 8203 Bill Tuck Highway, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 10, 1930, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Charlie T. Elliott and Maggie Glasscock Elliott.
She was married
to Howard Taft Blackmon, who predeceased her. She was a retired textile worker for JPS and attended Hitesburg Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty B. Townsend of Drakes Branch and Phyllis B. Matthews of Danville; one son, Howard Lewis Blackmon of Virgilina; four sisters, Janet Chapel of Vernon Hill, Molly Alease Holt of Milton, N.C., Irene Phillips of Virgilina and Bertha Phillips of Halifax; two brothers, Thomas Elliott and Bobby Elliott, both of Virgilina; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two brothers, Berkley “Dollbaby” Elliott and James Elliott and one sister, Willie Lee Stembridge.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.

Nora ‘Peggy’ Carmichael
RINGGOLD, Va. - Nora Tate “Peggy” Carmichael of 4268 Birchcreek Road, Ringgold, VA., died Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at the residence.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Clem R. Tate and Ollie Hall Tate, both deceased.
She was married
December 26, 1926, to Abram “Abe“ Carmichael, who died 8-29-89. Mrs. Carmichael lived her entire life in the Ringgold community, where she was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. Mrs. Carmichael was a babysitter for several years and was a homemaker.
Survivors include 4 Daughters: Janie C. Curtis and Jean M. Carmichael, both of Danville, VA., Carolyn C. Jarrett of Greensboro, NC and Sandra C. Griswell of Atlanta, GA.; 1 Son: Daniel C. Carmichael of Danville, VA.; 3 Sisters: Irene Wiles and Margaret Wilkerson, both of Ringgold, VA. and Lena Barker of Chatham, VA.; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by Brothers: Edward Tate, Hugh L. Tate, Eunice Tate and Julian Tate; 1 Granddaughter: Emilie Ann Curtis; 1 Grandson: Tony Bandy and 1 Sister: Evelyn Wilkerson.
The funeral will be held Friday August 31, 2001 at 3:00 PM at Kentuck Baptist Church by The Reverend Dr. A.C. Smith and The Reverend Freddy Vicks. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Christopher Cramer
DANVILLE, Va. - Christopher Lee Cramer, five weeks old, of 112 Parkway Drive, died suddenly Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one day in the hospital.
Born July 16, 2001, in Danville, he was the son of Coleman Lee Hale and Teri Lee Cramer, who survive.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of the residence and father of Danville, include maternal grandparents Richard and Judy Cramer of Danville.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ross L. Range officiating.

Katherine Davidson
RICHMOND, Va. - Katherine Horsley Booker Davidson, 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at Westminster-Canterbury from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Born Nov. 23, 1919, in Nelson County, she was the daughter of Ruby Harris Horsley Turpin and Thomas Martin Horsley.
She was first married
in 1941 to Frank E. Booker Jr., who predeceased her in 1967, and later married
in 1976 to J. Lyons Davidson, who predeceased her in 1984. She operated Halifax family business interests until 1996, when she moved to Richmond. She attended the College of William and Mary and graduated from Longwood College, where she served on the board of visitors for eight years beginning in 1975, and for two years was vice rector. She was a member of the board of trustees of Stuart Hall for Girls in Staunton, president of the South Central Virginia Flower Show Judges and parliamentarian of the Women of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Southern Virginia. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Halifax, where she served on the vestry, was chairman of the 1973 Restoration Committee and was president of the Women of the Church. She was president of the Halifax Parent-Teacher Association, president of the Banister River Garden Club, vice president of the Women’s Club and president of the Halifax County Women’s Golf Association. She was a member of the Lynchburg committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia and served as historian. She was a trustee of the Lynchburg Academy of Music and the Lynchburg Museum System and was active in restoration efforts at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest home.
Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Horsley Booker of Richmond and Mary Archer Booker Osborne of Halifax; one son, Frank E. Booker III of St. Simons Island, Ga.; one sister, Anne Horsley Wygal of Hilton Head, S.C.; two brothers, Thomas M. Horsley of Elizabeth City, N.C. and Ralph E. Turpin Jr. of Lovingston; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husbands and parents, by one brother, John Cabell Horsley.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Halifax. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

DRY FORK, Va. - Mary Ellen Hutcherson Dickerson, 91, formerly of 1730 White Oak Circle, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Village Care of King, N.C.
Born June 28, 1910, in Dry Fork, she was the daughter of Charles Raleigh Hutcherson and Virginia Cain Hutcherson.
She was married
to Robert N. Dickerson, who predeceased her Nov. 12, 2000. She worked for Dan River Mills as an inspector. She was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include one son, Charles W. Fletcher of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Linda D. Bryant of South Carolina; and two stepsons, Robert N. Dickerson Jr. of Chesapeake and Norman H. Dickerson of Kentucky.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery in Dry Fork with the Rev. Roger Collins officiating.

Hollis Edmonds Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Hollis Leon Edmonds Sr., 51, of 206 E. Thomas St., died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 2, 1950, in Danville, he was a son of Charlie Edmonds and Bessie W. Edmonds.
He was a laborer for Dimon and was a member of White Rock Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Hollis Leon Edmonds Jr. of Roanoke; one daughter, Angela Michelle Edmonds of Seattle; three brothers, Stanley and Kenneth Edmonds, both of Danville and Carl Edmonds of Burlington, N.C.; four sisters, Sandra McCain and LaVonne Ross, both of Danville and Darnese Staples and Ernestine Davis, both of Ringgold; and one grandson.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Tinsley officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
The viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
