Charlie Fitts
BLAIRS, Va. - Charlie Fitts, 90, of 2613 Hunter Lane, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 17, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Fitts and Mary Jenny Robinson Fitts.
He was married
to Ruth Fitts, who survives. He was a retired farmer.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four daughters, Frances Stamps of Blairs, Gertrude Slade of Danville and Louise Askew and Ordell Hoggard, both of Middletown, Ky.; one son, Raleigh Fitts of Atlanta; one sister, Queen Newby of Callands; and two brothers, Odis Martin of Dry Fork and Stockles Martin of Oklahoma.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Guildfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Vann officiating. Interment
will follow at Hoppel Chapel Baptist Church cemetery in Dry Fork.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his granddaughter, Joann Overton, 2627 Hunter Lane in Blairs.

Gregory Hazelwood Sr.
NATHALIE, Va. - Gregory B. Hazelwood Sr., 72, of 11235 L.P. Bailey Highway, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born June 14, 1929, in Halifax County, he was a son of Thomas Lee Hazelwood and Bettie Seamster Hazelwood.
He was married
to Christine M. Hazelwood, who survives. He was a farmer and was well known for building birdhouses.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Nathalie, include two sons, Michael and Ban Hazelwood, both of Nathalie; one daughter, Norma H. Bryant of Martinsville; one sister, Lana Conner of Red House; one brother, Raymond Hazelwood of Chase City; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one son, Gregory “Pete” Hazelwood Jr.; one sister, Gracie Conner; and three brothers, Sydnor, Thomas and Charlie Hazelwood.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hazelwood Family cemetery in Nathalie with the Rev. Jeff Jones and the Rev. Bob Watts officiating. Peggy and Gary Wilson and Willma Lee Lacks will be singing during the service.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Mary Manning
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Manning died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center where she had been a resident for many years.
Born Feb. 22, 1908, in Sutherlin, she was the daughter of John Hightower Manning and Florence Hudson Manning.
She was a member of Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church in Sutherlin.
Survivors include one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Manning of Martinsville.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Millard F. McKinsey Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Millard F. McKinsey Jr., 85, formerly of 304 Kemper Road, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 14, 1915, in Danville, he was the son of Millard F. McKinsey Sr. and Evelyn Scott McKinsey.
He was married
to Mozelle Merricks McKinsey, who predeceased him Feb. 16, 1991. He retired as chief engineer from Piedmont Broadcasting after 38 years of service and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one sister, Carol M. Ward of St. Clair Shore, Mich.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by one sister, Gonia E. Canhan.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. John Gentry officiating.
The family will be at the residence of a neighbor, 308 Kemper Road.

Phillip ‘Jackie’ Nichols
CASCADE, Va. - Phillip Eugene “Jackie” Nichols, 68, of 277 Cascade Mill Road, Cascade, VA, died August 30, 2001 at his residence.
Born in Stoneville, NC on August 10, 1933, he was the son of Jasper Bunyan Nichols (late) and Ruth E. Pyrtle Nichols (late). He was the owner of Nichols Heating & Airconditioning for 35 yrs. He was afiiliated with Full Gospel Baptist Church in Axton and served in the US Army in Korea.
Survivors include Thelma McMillian Nichols, his wife of 48 years, of the Home; Sandra Kay Keatts, Daughter of Axton, Louise Virginia Thompson, Daughter of Axton; Ted Eugene Nichols, Son of Axton; Hazel Haley, Sister of Axton, Mae Agee, Sister of Axton, Catherine Chandler, Sister of Cascade; Jasper Randolph Nichols, Brother of Axton, Russell Nichols, Brother of Danville, Ronnie Nichols, Brother of Axton; five grandchildren, Donnie Goins, Brandon E. Nichols, Lisa Sletcher, Reba Thompson and Ashley Nichols and great-grandchildren Lauren and Cody.
He was preceded in death by his Parents: Jasper Bunyan Nichols & Ruth Pyrtle Nichols; Daughter: Nancy Lee Nichols; Brothers: Curtis Nichols & Otis Nichols; Sister: Joyce Nichols Parrish.
Funeral services will be held Saturday Sept. 1, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Community Funeral Services Chapel Ridgeway with Rev. Herman Smith officiating. Interment
will be in McMillian Family cemetery in Axton.
The family will also receive family at the residence of his daughter, Sandra Keatts, 405 Gallery Road, Axton, Va.

Edward Payne
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Edward Swanson Payne, 80, of 5313 Browns Mill Road in Rustburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born April 1, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Coleman Payne and Jesse Shelton Payne.
He was married
to Mary Wright Payne, who survives. He was a charter member of the Altavista Church of Christ, a member of the American Legion Post No. 16, a retired employee of Babcock and Wilcox and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Jerry Payne of Rustburg; three daughters, Mildred Floyd of Rustburg, Linda Porter of Durham, N.C. and Delma Elmore of Forest; two brothers, Irvin Payne of Penhook and Voss Payne of Forest; one sister, Virginia Barker of Colonial Heights; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Altavista Church of Christ with Lory Brafford and J.D. Hunt officiating. Interment
will follow at Altavista Memorial Park.

James Pollard
GALAX, Va. - James Paul Pollard, 73, formerly of Vandola Road, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax after declining in health since 1995.
Born March 18, 1928, in West Virginia, he was a son of Grover Pollard and Murlie Halbrook Pollard.
He was married
to Gaynell Scearce Pollard, who predeceased him in 1979, and later married
Helen Carr Pollard, who survives. He lived the last six years of his life in Galax after spending most of his life in Danville. He retired from Dan River Inc. and attended Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Galax, include two sons, Grover Ray “Jody” Pollard and James Paul “Jim” Pollard Jr., both of Danville; two brothers, Gene Pollard of Elk Creek and Frank Pollard of Galax; two sisters, May Barnes of Danville and Ruth Parks of Elk Creek; one stepson, Roy Nickols of Fancy Gap; one stepdaughter, Linda Souther of Galax; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two stepgrandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and first wife, by five brothers, Fielden, Garland, Earl, Wade and Colin Pollard.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Pressley and the Rev. Jody Pollard officiating. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

Douglas Reynolds Jr.
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Douglas Reynolds Jr., 57, of 640 Slayton Road, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center emergency room after 14 years of declining health.
Born Sept. 9, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Douglas Reynolds Sr. and Mary Brookshire Reynolds, who survive.
He was married
to Rhonda Dalton Reynolds, who survives. He lived his entire life in Pittsylvania County and was a mechanic for Marshall Construction Co. and Laramore Construction Co. He was a member of Laurel Grove Fire and Rescue Squad and was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and father, both of the residence, and mother of Danville, include six daughters, Debra Reynolds DeBoe and Kimberly Reynolds Wyatt, both of Danville; Lisa Reynolds DeBoe of Sutherlin; Donna Reynolds Pruitt of Ruffin, N.C., Kelli Reynolds Mangrum of Ringgold and Kari Reynolds Gregory of the residence; one son Douglas “Skip” Reynolds III of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Katherine Sykes of Ohio and Dorothy McDowell of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Johnny Gentry officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

James Robertson
DANVILLE, Va. - James Anderson Robertson, age 88, formerly of 122 Manchester Avenue, died Monday evening, August 27, 2001 in the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
He was born on February 8, 1913, in Danville, Virginia, a son of the late James A. Robertson and Mary Watlington Robertson.
Mr. Robertson was educated in the Danville Public Schools and was a graduate of the Danville Military Institute and Washington and Lee University.
He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army as First Sergeant in the Military Police.
Mr. Robertson was a former director and vice-president of Dibrell Brothers, Inc. until his retirement with 42 years service.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he was a former Elder. He was a 50 year member of the Royal Arch Masons Euclid Chapter 15 and a former member of the Danville Golf Club.
Mr. Robertson was predeceased by his first wife, Sarah Prichard Robertson and later married
Anne Vaughn Robertson who died April 2, 1996.
He is survived by a daughter, Lindsay R. Aron and her husband, A. Macauley Aron, Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; a son, James A. Robertson, Jr. and his wife, Nancy C. Robertson of Salem, Va.; and two grandchildren, Barbara Robertson Tucker and James A. Robertson, III both of Glen Allen, Va.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 30, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Paul Johnson. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Zelna Wilkerson
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Zelna Wilkerson, 79, of 212 Martha Street, went to be with her lord on Tuesday afternoon August 28th, 2001. She died at her residence after declining health for the past 7 years.
Born on May 27, 1922 in Halifax County, Va., she was the daughter of the late James Marshall Shields and the late Maude Bell Martin Shields.
She was married
January 22, 1938, to Richard A. (Dick) Wilkerson, who survives at the residence. Mrs. Wilkerson had lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She had worked with Dan River Inc. for a number of years before becoming a full-time homemaker for over 20 years. Mrs. Wilkerson was a member of Shady Oak Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Fellowship Circle.
Survivors include her Husband Richard A. (Dick) Wilkerson of the residence; Sons Kenneth R. (Ken) Wilkerson of Ringgold, Va. and James Allen Wilkerson of Danville, Va.; Daughters Gloria Jean W. Anderson of Sutherlin, Va., Joan W. Haley of Danville, Va., Diane W. Crumpton of Danville, Va. and Bonnie W. Ross of Brockway, Penn.; one sister, Eva S. Smith of South Boston, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Friday, August 31st at 2:00 p.m. from Shady Oak Baptist Church by the Reverend Avery Marshall & Reverend Gilmer Setliff. Interment
will follow in the Shady Oak Baptist Church cemetery on the Walter’s Mill Road.
