James Adkins
CHATHAM, Va. - James Randall Adkins, 52, of 1914 South Boston Road in Danville, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Born Aug. 13, 1949, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jessie Willard Adkins an Myrtle Rigney Adkins.
He was a member of Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Anna A. Falls of Chatham, and four brothers, Willard A. Adkins of Dry Fork, Johnny W. Adkins of Callands, Leroy “Pete” Adkins of Blairs and Danny G. Adkins of Chatham.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Burial Park with the Rev. Steve Lewis officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Anna A. Falls, 1941 Dry Bridge Road in Chatham.

Willard Carter
CHATHAM, Va. - Willard Lewis Carter, 78, of 210 Peabody St., N.E., Washington, D.C. died Tuesday (08-29-01) in Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. Born January 14, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Richard Carter and Mrs. Annie James Carter. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Lawson Carter and one sister, Louise Haynes.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a captain with GSA Federal Protection Service tactical unit and after retirement as a security guard for the American Federal Govt. Employee’s Union, was an Army veteran of World War II, member of the Masonic Lodge in D.C. and a member of Watson Level Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Florence Faison Carter of the residence; one sister, Nicy Carter Hancock (Walter) of Salem, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Willie Linthicum of Washington, D.C., Mrs Evelyn Dearing of Gretna, Va., Mrs. Lottie Carter of Chatham, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Daniel Faison of District Heights, Md. and Graham Faison of Clinton, N.C. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 P.M. from the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home by Minister Iham Walie Elamin with interment in the Carter Family cemetery, Chatham, Va. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7-8 P.M. and other times at the residence of a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lottie Carter, 316 Lark Dr., Chatham, Va. Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.
Herman Chappelle
DANVILLE, Va. - Herman Joseph Chappelle, of 1162 Main St., died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was the son of Henry Chappelle and Mary J. Wilson.
He was married
to Mary Chappelle, who survives. He was a retired employee of the Lorillard Tobacco Company and served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include five daughters, three sons and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 12 noon Monday at High Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerome Morris Sr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery with military honors performed by American Legion Post 29 Burial Squad.

Eldridge Coates
MARTINSVILLE, Va. -Eldridge Belvue Coates, 83, of 1408 Spruce St., died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 7, 1917, in Danville, he was the son of Elbert Coates and Elsie Hundley Coates.
He was married
to Nell Gauldin Coates, who predeceased him in 1985. He served in the United States Army during World War II and worked in jewelry sales for many years. He was a member of Broad Street Christian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie Coates Tyner of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Marjorie Coates Harvey of Richmond; one brother, George Coates of Danville and two grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Green Hill cemetery in Danville with the Rev. Robert Rueter officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services, 109 Broad St. in Martinsville.

Frank Cox Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Frank L. Cox Sr., 79, of 222 Courtland St., Apt. 202, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, after six months of declining health.
Born Sept. 29, 1921, in Danville, he was the son of Dewey Cox and Mary Elizabeth Neal Cox.
He was married
to Hazel Scearce Cox, who predeceased him Jan. 13, 1989. He had lived his entire life in Danville and in 1986 retired from Dan River Mills where he had worked since 1941. At the time of his retirement, he was overseer of the Paint Shop and was also self-employed as a paint contractor for many years. He was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church and was active with local senior citizens groups as well as a member of the Disabled American Veterans Post No. 10. He was a World War II Navy veteran.
Survivors include four daughters, Phyllis C. Ponce of Dale City, Faye C. Knowles of Danville, Charlene L. Cox of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Tammy C. Nales of Ruffin, N.C.; one son, Frank “Frankie” L. Cox Jr. of Danville; five sisters, Ruth Hylton, Mildred Powell, Joan Campbell and Jackie Hedrick, all of Danville, and Shelby Collie of Colonial Heights; two brothers, Buddy Cox and Bobby Cox, both of Danville; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by one daughter, Darlene H. Cox; three brothers, James Cox, Vernell Cox and R.D. Cox, and one sister, Gloria Cox.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Walter Yancey and the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Post 1097.

John Culley Jr.
SCOTTSBURG, Va. - John L. “Pete” Culley Jr., 78, of 1226 Red Level Church Road, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at the residence.
Born Nov. 17, 1922, in Halifax County, he was the son of Leonard Culley and Mamie Watts Culley.
He was married
to Marie McSparran Culley, who predeceased him. He was a retired auto mechanic and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Greensboro, N.C.
Survivors include four sisters, Lena C. Yancey of Raleigh, N.C., Gloria C. Russell of Randolph, Ethel C. Everhart and Iris C. Redd, both of Clover; two half-brothers, Larry Culley and Wayne Culley, both of South Boston; and two half-sisters, Nancy Matthews and Sharon Church, both of South Boston.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by two sisters, Marie C. Snead and Grey C. Dunkley and two brothers, Jimmy D. Culley and Allen M. Culley.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Russell Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park in Greensboro, N.C.

Myrtle Dunevant
DANVILLE, Va. - Myrtle Smith Dunevant, 75, of 1324 College Park Drive Extension, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health.
Born Sept. 30, 1925, in Halifax, she was a daughter of Andrew Jackson Smith and Elsie Irene Clay Smith.
She was married
to James Evans Dunevant Sr., who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville and was a homemaker. She was a member of Gatewood Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Jo Anne Dunevant Francisco of Danville; one son, James Evans Dunevant Jr. of Danville; three brothers, Samuel Smith and Ed Smith, both of Providence, N.C. and James Smith of Clover; three sisters, Effie Wells and Beatrice Norton, both of Danville and Barbara Wyatt of Providence, N.C.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one brother, George Smith and one sister, Lucille Langford.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Gatewood Baptist Church with the Rev. John C. Gentry and the Rev. Daniel G. Lackey officiating. Interment
will follow at the Providence Baptist Church cemetery in Caswell County, N.C.

James Fulk
DANVILLE, Va. - James Carson Fulk, 70, of 112 Fairmont Circle, died Saturday morning, Sept. 1, 2001, at the residence.
Born Dec. 6, 1930, in Pilot Mt., N.C., he was the son of the late Sam and Myrtle Fulk.
He was first married
to Frances Haymore Fulk, who predeceased him July 31, 1969, and was married
Aug. 16, 1970, to Susan McCorkle Decker Fulk, who survives. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University and served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55 and was discharged as a first lieutenant from the 3rd Division at Fort Benning, Ga. He spent 13 years in active reserve and was a member of the American Legion Memorial Post 325. He retired from the Virginia Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, and was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Karen Shockley of Raleigh, N.C. and Vickie Quade of Henderson, Nev.; three stepsons, David Decker and Steven Decker, both of Danville and Brian Decker of Kingston, N.Y.; two brothers, Don Fulk of Mt. Airy, N.C. and John Fulk of Rocky Mount, N.C.; one grandson; and seven step
grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairview United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tom Barnard. Interment
will follow at Danville Memoiral Gardens with military honors performed by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the church and other times at the residence.

Joe Ferrell
DANVILLE, Va. - Joe Ferrell, 77, of 916 Seeland Road, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2001, at the residence.
Born March 25, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry and Ola Davis Ferrell.
He was married
to Mary Ferrell, who survives. He was a member of Movement Church of Jesus Christ and was a retired employee of Danville Public Works Department.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Danville, include three daughters, Mary Ferrell of Roanoke, Tuesday Ferrell and Wendy Ferrell, both of Danville; three sons, Joe C. Ferrell, James H. Ferrell and Joe L. Ferrell, all of Roanoke; 30 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at L.H. Brooks and Bro. Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charles Wagstall officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.

Milton Greenberg
DANVILLE, Va. - Dr. Milton Greenberg, age 72, of 173 Linden Drive, died Sunday afternoon, September 2, 2001 at his residence.
He was born on February 13, 1929, in Danville, Virginia, the son of the late Philip and Mattie Gravely Greenberg.
Dr. Greenberg attended John L. Berkley Grammar School and George Washington High School. In high school he was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Athletic Scholastic Society. He earned letters in both basketball and baseball and was captain of the 1947 George Washington High School basketball team.
He attended Duke University from 1947 to 1950. At Duke, he was a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Delta Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholastic societies.
Dr. Greenberg attended the University of Virginia Medical School from 1950 to 1954 and was elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, the Medical School Honorary Scholastic Society.
He received his M.D. Degree in 1954 and served his rotating internship at the University of Virginia Hospital from 1954 to 1955.
Dr. Greenberg served in the United States Air Force, first at Wolters Air Force Base in Mineral Wells, Texas from 1955 to 1956, and then at Manhattan Beach Air Force Station in Brooklyn, New York from 1956 to 1957. He was discharged in 1957 with the rank of Captain.
His residency training in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery was at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York City from 1957 to 1960.
Dr. Greenberg returned to Danville in 1960 to open his medical practice. He was on the staff of Memorial Hospital (now Danville Regional Medical Center) where he served terms as Chief of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Chief of Surgery and President of the Medical Staff. Dr. Greenberg was a member of the Danville-Pittsylvania Academy of Medicine, the American Medical Association, and the Virginia Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck-Surgery. He was board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 1962. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Danville Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Greenberg of the home; three daughters, Lisa Plazzo and her husband, Bob, of Peninsula, Ohio, Mary Dale Greenberg of Baltimore, Maryland, and Susan Philip Jones and her husband, Frankie, of Hilton Head, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Brandy and Brian Plazzo and Mary Stewart and Michael Jones. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Allen Greenberg.
