Leaone Hackney
HALIFAX, Va. - Leaone Watts Hackney, 76, of 1015 Quail Lane, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 30, 1924, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John Richard Watts and Mary Bennett Watts.
She was married
to Ollie Hackney, who survives. She was a beautician and a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Halifax, include two sons, David Hackney of Ringgold and Mark Hackney of Wilmington, N.C.; two brothers, J.B. Watts of Scottsburg and Earl Watts of Halifax; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Dan River Baptist Church with Dr. Melvin Bradshaw, the Rev. Lewis Wall and Dr. Lynn Marstin officiating. Interment
will follow at Dan River Baptist Church cemetery, 1228 Dan River Church Road.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

William Headspeth
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -William Caroll Headspeth, 103, of 1801 Chamberlain St., died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 19, 1897, in South Boston, he was the son of John Branch Headspeth and Annie Beazley Headspeth.
He was married
to Ella Anderson Headspeth, who predeceased him. He was employed by Carroll’s Auto Supply and the South Boston News and Record Advertiser. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a longtime member of the Lacy Bible Class. He was a charter member of the South Boston Lion’s Club and a member of Woodman of the World Camp 106, where he served as treasurer. He was an honorary member of DAR and UDC and was active in the Bicentennial Committee of 1976.
Survivors include one daughter, Jeanne H. Taylor of South Boston; two sons, William C. “Bill” Headspeth of Virginia Beach and John H. “Jack” Headspeth of Greensboro, N.C.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert M. Fox Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Elois Jefferson
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Elois Jefferson, 43, of 19 Hunters Ridge, died unexpectedly Monday, Aug. 27, 2001.
Born May 7, 1958, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of George Dixon, who survives, and Annie Bell Walton Dixon.
She was married
to Alvin Jefferson, who survives. She was employed by the Nautica Clothing Company in Martinsville.
Survivors, in addition to her husband and father, include two daughters, Camesha Thomas and Yulanda Ingram, both of Danville, and one sister, Sonya Luck of Danville.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tarpley’s Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Divens Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

John R. Kemp Jr.
WAYNESBORO, Va. - John R. Kemp, Jr., 70, of Waynesboro, VA, died Friday, August 31, 2001 at Avante Nursing Home of Waynesboro.
He was born November 5, 1930 in Danville, VA, son of the late John R. and Virginia Moorefield Kemp.
Mr. Kemp was a member of Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, retired from Thiokol as a Director of Operations, Charter Member of Chapter 4393 AARP having served as Past President and District 3 Director, Charter Member of the Waynesboro High Noon Kiwanis Club, member and Past President of the Waynesboro Exchange Club, member of Friends of the Waynesboro Public Library, member of the Waynesboro Masonic Lee Lodge #209 A.F. & A.M. and was an Army Veteran and member of the Army Security Agency.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara W. Kemp; a son and daughter-in-law, John R., III and Judith C. Kemp of Atlanta, GA. and two grandchildren, Jason A. Kemp of Arlington, VA and Jessica A. Kemp of Atlanta.
A service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at the McDow Funeral Home by Revs. Fred Holbrook and Clifford Caldwell. Interment
will follow at 3:00 PM in Highland Burial Park, Danville, VA.
Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Robinson, Less Harper, Clyde Roland, Jerry Layman, Tom Lowery, Bob Harry, Larry Talbott, Dr. Charles Pauly and Scott Johnson.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday at McDow Funeral Home.

Amon Kirks
MARTINSVILLE, Va. -Amon Spencer Kirks, 54, of 1646 Rivermont Heights, died at 7:11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
Born July 15, 1947, in Danville, he was a son of Alma Lynch Kirks, who survives, and Samuel Adam Kirks.
He was first married
to Frances Mayhew Kirks, who predeceased him, and later married
Barbara Bolejack Kirks, who survives. He lived most of his life in the Bachelors Hall and Martinsville areas. He retired after 31 years with Tultex and later was employed with 58 Cafe in Horsepasture. He attended the Learning Center for Adults and was a member of Fontaine Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart and his mother of Bachelors Hall, include one daughter, Susan Renee Kirks Higgs Hall of Axton; two sisters, Mildred Kirks of Bachelors Hall and Louise Tickle of Martinsville; one brother, Glenn Wallace Kirks of Bachelors Hall; one half-brother, Leroy Lynch of Brosville; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Michael Lacks
CHATHAM, Va. - Michael Flournoy Lacks, 46, of 236 Whittle St., died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 26, 1955, in Halifax County, he was a son of Emily June Smith Lacks, who survives, and Flournoy Gatewood “Steve” Lacks.
He was married
to Marquerite Burscher “Peggy” Lacks, who survives. He was a member of Chatham Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Poquoson and wife of the residence, include two daughters, Jessica Marie Lacks and Alexandra Lea Lacks, both of Chatham; one stepdaughter, Chelsea Renee Saunders of Chatham; and three brothers, Mark Lacks and Larry Lacks, both of Poquoson and Wallie Lacks of 29 Palms, Calif.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham with the Rev. Michael Macon officiating. Interment
will follow with military rites performed by American Legion Post 1097.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Burton Mills
DANVILLE, Va. - Burton Issac Mills, 86, formerly of 871 Grove St., died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Twin Oakes Convalescent Home after several years of declining health and one month in the nursing home.
Born March 18, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lloyd Issac Mills and Harriet Gregory Mills.
He was first married
to Doris Walker Mills who predeceased him Dec. 18, 1988 and later married
Emma G. Mills, who predeceased him Nov. 5, 1992. He lived his life in the Danville area and was employed with Crane Tire Company prior to his retirement. He also worked at the Dan River Flour Mill for a number of years. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Robert Jerry Mills of Danville; two sisters, Ruth Mills and Mary Farthing, both of Danville; three brothers, Raymond Mills, Andrew Mills and Granville Mills, all of Danville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wives, by one sister, Ethel Swaringen.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Scearce Family cemetery with the Rev. Carl Burger officating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 1131 Log Haven Road in Dry Fork.

James Powell Morgan
DANVILLE, Va. - Lt. Colonel James P. Morgan, retired, died Friday, August 31, 2001, at his residence. Col. Morgan was born at Skipwith, VA. on August 12, 1917. He was a son of Lacy Williams Morgan Martin and Abdella Sabe Morgan.
He was married
to Dean Luther Morgan who survives him. He was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, the Artillery School, Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, the Anti-Aircraft and Guided Missile School, Ft. Bliss, Texas and attended North Carolina State University.
He retired with thirty-three years of military service and served in World War II and Korea. He was presented the Croix de Cuerre by General Charles DeGualle for participating in the liberation of France. He holds six battles stars and the Bronze Star.
Col. Morgan was the owner of Refrigeration Service Co., Inc. until his retirement.
He was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he was a former Sunday school teacher, choir member and served in various positions on the official board.
He was a former member of the Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Sertoma Club, Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Life member of Reserved Officers, Barbershoppers and Tuscarora Country Club.
Col. Morgan in addition to his wife, is survived by a daughter, Bonne’ Rae Mahler of Chesterfield, VA and her husband, George Mahler, a son, Rev. James P. Morgan, Jr. and his wife, Mary Dale Morgan of Columbia, S.C. and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Ardell Clark, Lake Wales, FL., Mrs. Mary Jane Bright, Kinston, N.C., Rev. Robert Martin, M. Gene Martin both of Danville, VA, and W. Ray Martin, Tucson, AZ. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by one brother, George G. Martin, Jr. and one sister, Betsy M. Cardin. He also leaves two grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001 at 2:00 pm from Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Levi Stroud, Rev. Linwood Daniel, and Rev. James P. Morgan, Jr. Full Military Graveside Honors will follow in Greenhill cemetery and will be given by the Honor Guard from Fort Lee.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001 from 7:00-8:30 pm and at other times at 145 Sunset Place.

Jack Morris
WHITNEY, Texas - Jack Morris, 73, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001 at a Marlin Hospital.
Born Nov. 15, 1927, in Belton, S.C., he was a son of Whitt Lee Morris Sr. and Thelma Serratt Morris.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was part owner of Foreign Food Shop in Killeen. He owned the Bean Pot and Triple 7 Cafe and he was a member of the Covenant Church.
Survivors include two sons, Barry Morris of Whitney and Michael Morris of Hewitt; one daughter, Penny Erb of Whitney; one brother, Garland W. Morris of Danville; two sisters, Geraldine M. Tate and Betty Jean M. Travis, both of Danville; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Dossman Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Sebastian, the Rev. Jack Cox and Dr. Barry Morris officiating. Interment
will follow at North Belton cemetery in Belton.

Bessie Neal
CHATHAM, Va. - Bessie Payne Neal, 101, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 24, 1900, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of William Beauregard Payne and Mary Alice Hodnett Payne.
She was married
to Robert Haskins Neal, who predeceased her. She was a member of Payneton United Methodist Church and graduated from Blackstone College for Girls in 1921. She taught elementary school and was a 100-year-old member of the Class of 1921 at the Blackstone College reunion.
Survivors include a niece, Alice Virginia Seed of Humble, Texas and a nephew, Norman Payne of Chatham.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Payneton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas Boggs officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery in Chatham.
