Dora Newman
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Dora Creasy Newman of Roman Eagle Nursing Home and formerly of 114 Glen Oak Drive, died Wednesday evening August 29, 2001 at Roman Eagle. Mrs. Newman was born in Bedford on March 3, 1917, a daughter of the late Hubbart and Glennie Wilson Creasy.
She was married
to Ezra P. Newman, who died on June 14, 1991.
Mrs. Newman worked for Dan River, Inc., for 35 years and was a member of Southall Baptist Church and Westover Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters: Betty Lucas and her husband Don of Christiansburg and Bonnie Trembley and her husband Donnie of Flagstaff, Arizona, and three sons: Earl Creasy and his wife Nadine of Bedford, and James Newman and his wife Linda of Ringgold, and the Rev. H. Ray Newman of Glen Burnie, MD; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 great, great grandchild; one brother: Harry Creasy of Bedford; and four sisters: Frances McAllister of Gastonia, NC, Jennie Flint of Lynchburg, Hilda Ashwell of Astavista, and Stella Lawson of Bedford.
She was predeceased by a son, Dennis Wayne Newman; one daughter-in-law, Janet Britton Newman; one granddaughter, Robin Creasy; and one sister, Bertha Fulton.
The funeral will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber, pastor of Westover Baptist Church. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family received friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M., and at other times at the residence of Jimmy and Linda Newman, 1833 Barker Road, Ringgold.
Myra Newton
DANVILLE, Va. - Myra Waddell Newton, 72, formerly of Mount Cross Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Riverside Health Care Center, where she had resided since 1990.
Born June 13, 1929, in Meherrin, she was a daughter of George Waddell and Stella Isenhour Waddell.
She was married
to Luther Newton, who predeceased her May 18, 1994. She lived in Danville most of her life and worked for Dan River Inc. for 30 years. She was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Rachel N. Kelly and Barbara Ann Newton, both of Danville; one son, Luther Frank Newton of Danville; three sisters, Geneva Waddell Hardy of Victoria, Emily Waddell of Keysville and Blanche Waddell Murray of Farmville; one brother, Robert Earl Waddell of Drakes Branch; and one grandchild.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with Dr. Charles B. Scearce officiating.

Cleddie Potts
DANVILLE, Va. - Cleddie Allen Potts, 66, of 6987 Blanch Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at the residence.
Born Nov. 9, 1934, she was a daughter of Henry T. and Lula Stephens.
She was married
to James Potts, who predeceased her. She was a member of River Zion Baptist Church and taught in Danville and Charlotte, N.C. school systems.
Survivors include two sisters, Monnie A. Jones of Forestville, Md. and Lona A. Hayes of Greensboro, N.C.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at River Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tyrone Thornton officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Friday prior to the funeral and other times at the residence.

Julia Powers
DANVILLE, Va. - Julia Cordelia Powers, 57, of 517 Holbrook St., died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1943, in North Carolina, she was a daughter of the Rev. John E. Powers Jr. and Pearl McIver Powers.
She was a retired social worker of the city of Richmond and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Agnes Powers of the residence.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Sernus Churns officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden.
The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church and other times at the residence.

Harry Pruitt
DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Lee Pruitt, 72, of 1482 Blair Loop Road, died 11:42 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five months of declining health and two weeks in the hospital.
Born March 10, 1929, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of James Pruitt and Elsie Emerson Pruitt.
He was married
to Winnie Ganey Pruitt, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and resided on Blair Loop Road for the past 12 years. He was a driver for Danville Traction and Power Co. for 30 years and worked later for the City of Danville until his retirement at age 63. He attended the Danville Technical Institute for two years and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He was a member of The Tabernacle.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Deborah Pruitt Dix of Danville; one son, Robert Lee Pruitt of Mississippi; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one daughter, Nancy Marie Pruitt.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham and the Rev. Ronnie Pruitt officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with Graveside Military Honors performed by Dan River Post No. 1097 American Legion.

W. Ward Reynolds
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Willie Ward Reynolds, 95, died Thursday, August 23, 2001 in Lexington.
Born August 13, 1906, in Callands, Va., he was the son of Will Thomas and May Powell Reynolds.
He was married
to Mildred Harwood Reynolds, who survives. He was a graduate of Callands High School and National Business College in Roanoke, Va. He also attended the University of Richmond and was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He retired as a controller from Greyhound Bus Company and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one sister, Ruby Reynolds Anderson of Chatham, Va.
The graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va. with the Rev. John McCray officiating.
Sue Salmons
CASCADE, Va. - Sue Snead Salmons, 51, of 405 Blackbird Place, died Sunday morning, Sept. 2, 2001, at the Danville Regional Medical Center emergency room following a sudden illness at the residence.
Born Oct. 5, 1949, in Danville, she was the daughter of Tommie Lawson Snead Sr., who survives, and Carlethia Garrett Snead.
She was married
to Archie W. Salmons Jr., who survives. She was a 1968 graduate of Tunstall High School and spent most of her life in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County. She was a real estate agent for five years, now working with Baldwin and Associates Realty, and was also an independent contractor for Home Interiors and Gifts. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence and father of Pelham, N.C., include one daughter, Kristi S. Price of Ringgold, and two sons, Mark Ray Salmons of Frederick, Md. and Joel C. Salmons of Reidsville, N.C.; one sister, Linda Cousins of Callands; one brother, Harold Snead of Danville, and one granddaughter. She was predeceased, in addition to her mother, by one sister, Vada Joe Snead and one brother, Tommie Snead Jr.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Blalock officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Lorita Shelton
PITTSVILLE, Va. - Lorita Kaye Shelton, 42, of 637 Court Road, died Thursday morning, Sept. 6, 2001, at the residence.
Born Nov. 25, 1958, she was a daughter of John Berger and Callie Jefferson Berger.
She was married
to Moncie Shelton, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and member of the Burning Bush Holiness Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Wendy Gregory of Hurt; one son, Jeremy Berger of Pittsville; three sisters, Stella Stewart of Washington, Odelia Robertson and Carolyn Hubbard, both of Pittsville; five brothers, Clinton Berger, John Berger, the Rev. Louis Berger and Marvin Berger, all of Pittsville and Orey Berger of Gretna; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Burning Bush Holiness Church with the Rev. Louis Berger, eulogist and Elder Gary Witcher officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be at the residence of the Rev. Louis Berger, 2545 Ridgeway Road in Pittsville.

Claude ‘Bud’ Travis
DANVILLE, Va. - Claude “Bud” Travis, 64, of 126 Burwood Place, died Monday morning, Sept. 3, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 10, 1937, in Danville, he was the son of Claude F. Travis Sr. and Buna Rush Travis.
He was married
to Betty Shelton Travis, who survives. He was retired from the United States Army after 22 years of service and served during the Vietnam War era. He was later associated with the Peoples Life Insurance Company. During his military career he traveled to several foreign countries and many different states. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the American Legion Memorial Post 325 and the D.A.V. Chapter 19.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Susie Black of Danville and Vickie Sigmon of Ringgold; one son, Michael C. Travis of Danville; one brother, Donald R. Travis of Danville; four stepsons, David Jarrett of Danville, Michael Jarrett of Harrisonburg, Brian Jarrett of Harrisonburg and Mark Jarrett of Ringgold; five grandchildren; eight step grandchildren and one step great-grandchild.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Herman E. Travis, and one sister, Betty T. Puryear.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.

DANVILLE, Va. - Elvira “Ella” Frances Traynham, 78, of Riverside Health Care Center, died Sept. 2, 2001, at the residence.
Born Feb. 25, 1923, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John Edward Traynham Sr. and Ella Barksdale Traynham.
She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Mildred T. Roache of Harrisonburg, and one brother, Randolph S. Traynham of Danville.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by four brothers, John E. Traynham, Armistead B. Traynham, Lawson B. Traynham and Daniel M. Traynham, and one sister, Helen T. Carr.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Grover Stevens officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Randolph S. Traynham, 272 Arnett Boulevard in Danville.

VERNON HILL, Va. - Floyd Calvin Welcher Jr., 64, of 1005 Landrum Trail, died Sept. 3, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born July 16, 1937, in Halifax County, he was the son of Floyd Calvin Welcher Sr. and Annie Fleming Welcher, who survives.
He was married
to Jean White Landrum Welcher, who predeceased him. He was a member and trustee of the Ingram Christian Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Virgilina, include two sons, Michael Calvin Welcher of Virgilina and Ronald Lynn Welcher of South Boston; one sister, Peggy Gray of Burlington, N.C.; one brother, William Riley Welcher of Virgilina and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the graveside with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Walker officiating. Interment
will follow at Ingram Christian Church.
