Mildred Bean
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Griffith Bean, 81, of Riverside Health Care Center died Saturday night, Sept. 15, 2001, at the residence after eight years as a patient.
Born Jan. 28, 1920, in Danville, she was the daughter of Elijah Griffith and Nannie Moss Griffith.
She was married
to Earl Bean, who predeceased her in 1991. She lived her entire life in Danville and was a graduate of Schoolfield High School. She retired from Dan River Inc. after 38 years of service and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Loretta B. Aron of Ringgold; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one daughter, Betty Jean Irby, four sisters and two brothers.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating. Interment
will follow.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter, 1003 Woodbriar Lane in Ringgold.

Linda Comer
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Linda Lloyd Comer, 49, of 1020 Holland Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at the residence.
Born July 6, 1952, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Rosetta C. Oldham, who survives, and Herman Hagood Lloyd.
She was a beautician and employed by a cleaning service and was a member of Seven Oaks Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother of Goldston, N.C., include stepfather, Melvin Oldham of Goldston; two daughters, Allison Nicole Comer and Amy Lee Comer, both of South Boston and fiance, Branford Slate of South Boston.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Seven Oaks Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Bucklew, the Rev. Don Daniels and the Rev. Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Interment
will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Ila Cox
DANVILLE, Va. - Ila Ruth Edwards Cox, 86, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at the residence.
Born Sept. 8, 1915, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of Daniel and Zelipha Bedsaul Edwards.
She was married
to Ralph R. Cox, who predeceased her.
Survivors include sons, Bennie T. Cox of Yanceyville, N.C. and John J. Cox of Richmond; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The graveside service was held 11 a.m. Thursday at Oakland United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Randy Morris officiating.

Uzelle Cross
CHERAW, S.C. - Uzelle Edward Cross, 48, of 400 Dogwood Circle, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001.
Born Sept. 28, 1952, he was the son of Frances M. Giles and stepson of Richard Giles.
He was born in Danville, Va., and moved to Cheraw, where he was employed as a fixer for Highland Industries Inc. He was a member of Cheraw Rescue Squad.
Survivors include one brother, Larry Thomas Cross Sr. of Axton, Va.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Coe officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Moses Dunkley
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Moses Daniel Dunkley, 85, of 406 Oak Lane, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Twin Oaks Convalescent Home.
Born Jan. 24, 1916, in Halifax County, he was the son of John Daniel Dunkley and Nora Yates Dunkley.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the American Legion.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, John Dunkley.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Virginia Veterans cemetery in Amelia with Dr. Tony Brooks officiating.

Woodrow Hall Sr.
DIAMOND BAR, Calif. - Woodrow R. Hall Sr., 79, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, in San Dimas Community Hospital.
Born Aug. 12, 1922, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Thomas Jackson Hall Sr. and Florence Matthew Hall.
He was married
to Dorothy Morris Hall, who survives. He was educated in Danville Public Schools and graduated from George Washington High School. He was a veteran of World War II and was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a retired forklift operator at McLean Trucking Company in Los Angeles.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Woodrow R. Hall Jr. of Aliso Viejo and Michael D. Hall of Las Vegas; one daughter, Cindy H. Whitmer of Fontana; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers, Thomas J. Hall Jr. and Earl Hall and three sisters, Catherine Hilliard, Mary Brady and Edith Owen.
Funeral arrangements have been postponed and will be announced at a later date.

Reva Hancock
DANVILLE, Va. - Reva Annette Sigmon Hancock, 36, of 109 South Hunter St., died Thursday evening, Sept. 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after four years of declining health and a number of visits to the hospital.
Born Dec. 14, 1964, in Danville, she was the daughter of Percy A. Sigmon, who survives, and Reva Mullins Sigmon, and was the stepdaughter of June Sigmon.
She was married
to Steve Hancock, who survives.
She lived in Danville all of her life and was a homemaker. She attended the Church of the Living God on Edmonds Street.
Survivors, in addition to her father and stepmother of Danville and husband of Pelham, N.C., include three sisters, Audrey Chilton and Kimberly Moore, both of Danville and Tammy Hancock of Pelham, N.C.; one stepsister, Pat Howell of Danville and one stepbrother, Gary Howell of Danville.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Living God with the Rev. Hassell Priddy officiating. Interment
will follow at Sigmon Cook Family cemetery on South Hunter Street.

James Harvey
McEWEN, Tenn. - James Melvin Harvey, 99, died Sept. 20, 2001.
Born Dec. 8, 1901, in Danville, Va., he was the son of James Oakey Harvey and Iva Stephens Harvey.
He was married
to Betty Lou Mathews Harvey, who survives. He was of the Christian faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, James M. Harvey Jr., Thomas S. Harvey and Brian L. Harvey, all of McEwen; two daughters, Debra Baker of Waverly and Belinda May of Hurricane Mills; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Calvin W. Harvey of Oak Ridge, N.J. and Ralph A. Harvey of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Vilma H. Barbour and Carolyn Porter, both of Danville, Va.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one daughter, Anita Mae Baker and one sister, June H. Rembold.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Luff Bowen Funeral Home in Waverly.
William ’Bill’ Hess
DANVILLE, Va.- Mr. William (Bill) Leigh Hess of 140 Virginia Avenue died Friday afternoon at The Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health.
Mr. Hess was born in Danville, January 9, 1924 a son of the late Ralph Samuel Hess and Mary Hicks Hess.
He was educated in the Danville Public Schools and graduated from George Washington High School. He attended V.P.I. and Washington and Lee University.
Mr. Hess was Past President of Hodnett and Speer Jewelers. He was also Past President of The Kiwanis Club.
He was a member of The First Baptist Church and The Garnett-Norton Sunday School Class.
He was a past junior deacon at the church.
Mr. Hess was a member of The Danville Golf Club and past member of The German Club and The Young Men’s Club.
A veteran serving in The European Theater of Operations with The 144th Ordinance Motor Vehicle Assembly Company of The U.S. Army.
Surviving are his wife of the home: Peggy Gibson Hess. Two Daughters: Mary Kathryn Grogg of Johnson City, Tenn. and The Reverend Dr. Margaret Ballard Hess Lacey of Nashua, N.H. One brother: Ralph S. Hess of Danville. Two granddaughters: Lindsay Katherine Grogg and Lacy Miller Grogg both of Johnson City, Tenn.

Edward Hylton
DANVILLE, Va. - Edward William Hylton, 88, of 80 Vandola Road, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at the residence, after three weeks of declining health and a period of time in the hospital.
Born Oct. 12, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George W. Hylton and Margaret Liken Hylton.
He was married
to Virgie Moss Hylton, who predeceased him. He was a veteran of the United States Army and lived in the Vandola community of Pittsylvania County all of his life, where he attended Vandola Baptist Church. He worked for Dan River Inc. for 35 years, prior to his retirement at the age of 65.
Survivors include one son, Charles “Sonny” Hylton of the residence; one sister, Ida Doss of Danville; one brother, Issic G. Hylton of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Reagan Family cemetery on Vandola Road with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
