DANVILLE, Va. - Byrdia G. Walton, 101, formerly of 133 Melbourne Circle, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 10, 1900, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Cajer and Lidia McCain Gunn.
She was first married
to Russell Dabney, who predeceased her, later married
Howard Walton, who predeceased her, and lastly married
James Walton, who predeceased her.
Survivors include three daughters, Eunice Price of Philadelphia and Margie Waller and Veronia W. Farmer, both of Danville, and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husbands, by one son, James Russell Dabney.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Freeman Baptist Church with the Rev. James C. Dillard officiating. Interment
will follow at Fultz Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 133 Melbourne Circle.

Estelle Wilkerson
ALTON, Va. - Estelle Bailey Wilkerson, 87, of 1055 Wilkerson Trail, died Sept. 30, 1914, at The Woodview.
Born Sept. 23, 1914, in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert Daniel Bailey Sr. and Fannie Humphries Bailey.
She was married
to Joe Wilkerson, who predeceased her. She was a registered nurse at Halifax Community Hospital prior to her retirement. She was a member of Alton Baptist Church, where she was also a member of the WMU. She was a member of the Alton Homemakers Club.
Survivors include one son, Page Wilkerson of Alton; two daughters, Josephine Gulley of Alton and Joyce Poindexter of Martinsville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by two brothers, Robert Bailey and Jack Bailey and two sisters, Annie Brooks Johnson and Thelma Wilkins.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Alton Baptist Church cemetery on Harmony Road with the Rev. Phillip Ellenburg officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Edna Willard
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Edna Stovall Willard, age 90, died Thurs. Sept. 27, 2001 at Riverside Nursing Home in Danville. She was born on November 3, 1910 in Patrick County to the late Mary Ida Stovall.
She lived most of her life in Bassett, VA until moving to Danville in 1994. There she lived with her granddaughter, Mrs. Jeff (Denise) Morris, 165 Brush Arbor Ct.
Edna was a loving Mother, Grandmother, and a good friend to all. She worked at Stanley Furniture for 17 years and at J.D. Bassett for 12 years, where she retired in 1972. She was a longtime member of Thomasson Heights Baptist Church in Collinsville, VA.
In addition to her mother she was preceded in death by her husband, Ross L. Willard, a daughter, Lois M. Willard, and a son, William (Billy) Willard.
She is survived by one son, Russell Willard of Bassett. Five Grandchildren. Three Step Grandchildren. 12 Great Grandchildren. Five Step Great Grandchildren. Four Great Great Grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, 2001 at 2:00 PM at Thomasson Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Doby Salmons officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 to 8:30 at Collins Funeral Services in Bassett and at other times at the home of her granddaughter, Denise Morris.
Virginia Yeatts
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Moses Yeatts, 87, of 1111 Main St., died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 4, 1914, in Norfolk, she was a daughter of Thomas Postell Moses and Fannie Hodnett Moses.
She was married
to William Saunders Yeatts, who predeceased her. She attended Farmville State Teachers College and taught school in Norfolk. She lived in Chatham, where she was a member of Watson Memorial United Methodist Church, before she moved to Danville. She was past president of Chatham Garden Club and a member of the William Pitt Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Yeatts Brown of Virginia Beach and two stepgrandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two sisters, Ellen M. Timberlake and Louise Moses.
The graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Chatham Burial Park with the Rev. Jonathan L. Bennett officiating. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Evergreen Room at Stratford House.
The family will be at the Stratford House in Danville.
The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of choice.

Catherine Young
DANVILLE, Va. - Grace Catherine “Tom” Moss Young, 91, formerly of the the Vandola community, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after several years of declining health and more than 10 years at Roman Eagle.
Born March 6, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Andrew Jackson Moss and Fannie Boyd Moss.
She was married
to Herman Roosevelt Young, who predeceased her Oct. 13, 1984. She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
Survivors include one son, Carl David Young of Danville; three daughters, Constance “Connie” Y. McCormick of Ringgold, Maude Y. Coggin of Danville and Becky Y. Butts of Yanceyville, N.C.; six grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one son, Bobby Ray Young; two daughters, Phoebe Y. Ragsdale and Hasseltine Langston Young; one grandson; four brothers, Oscar Moss, Charlie Moss, Dorsey Moss and L. Flint Moss; and three sisters, Lottie Moss Mills, Margie Moss Wall and Lizzie Moss Davis.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Tom Evans officiating. Interment
will follow at Reagan Family cemetery on Vandola Road.

Ellen Barker
DANVILLE, Va. - Ellen Croom Barker, of 101 Wilton Avenue, Danville, died Tuesday, October 23, 2001, at her residence.
Born February 28, 1950 she was the daughter of the late Herman Lee Croom and Mildred Cain Croom of Florida.
She was educated in Fairfax County Public Schools and was a graduate of Averett University with a BS Degree in Elementary Education. She taught second and third grades in Caswell County and Pittsylvania County School Systems.
She attended Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and was a member of the Adult V Sunday School Department.
She was married
to Reid Barker on December 30, 1976, who survives of the home.
Survivors include her mother, Mildred C. Croom, husband of the residence, one daughter, Julie Barker Burnett of Ringgold, son-in-law, Mel Burnett, grandsons; Lance and Samuel Burnett.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001 at 11:00 am from Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Lee Ellison.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday night from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home.

Mary Bray
NATHALIE, Va. - Mary West Bray, 85, of 4206 Hunting Creek Road, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 15, 1916, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Thomas Elam West and Mary Bradley West.
She was married
to Norman W. Bray, who survives. She was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of Nathalie and a number of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. H.V. Conner and the Rev. Lee Roy Davis officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Steven Carden
DANVILLE, Va. - Steven “Super Red” Carden, 47, of 262 Banner St., died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 13, 1954, in Danville, he was a son of Charles Arnold Carden Sr. and Ruth Lovell Carden.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Rangers with the First Batallion during the Vietnam era. He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was a member of the Scorpion and was a herptologist. He was a member of the American Legion and National Arbor Day Foundation. He was a member of the National Audobon Society, the National Rifle Association and the Westbrook Society and was a scoutmaster. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Jonathan Patrick Carden of Danville and one sister, Hazel Jean Carden Lovett of Siloam Springs, Ark.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Richard Ladew officiating with military honors performed by American Legion Post No. 1097 Honor Guard. Interment
will be private.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Melissa Baxter, 104 Berkley St.

Janie Carter
DANVILLE, Va. - Janie Johnson Carter, 85, of 2128 Robin Hood Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 11, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walter Johnson and Martha Clark.
She was a homemaker and a member of Bethelway of the Cross Church.
Survivors include four sons, Allen Carter, Olando Carter and Billy Ray Carter, all of Danville and John Wesley Carter of Washington; six daughters, Denise Carter, Mattie Parker and Jacqueline Johnson, all of Danville, Susie Jefferson and Mary A. Carter, both of Washington and Christine Jezter of Pelham, N.C.; one brother, Johnny Johnson of Rocky Mount; one sister, Lillie Mae Fitzgerald of Axton; 27 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethelway of the Cross Church with Apostle Joseph Adams officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing was held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

CRYSTAL HILL, Va. -Mattie Chandler, 80, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Berry Hill Nursing Home in South Boston.
Born April 8, 1921, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Gertrude Williams and James Hundley.
Survivors include 11 nieces and three nephews.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Crawford, Garrett and Burton Funeral Home with Elder Branford Edmonds officiating. Interment
will follow at Crystal Hill Baptist Church cemetery.
