SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Virginia Rose Hebrock Bailey, 75, of 1167 Ponderosa Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 17, 1926 in Crossroads, W.Va., she was a daughter of John and Francis Hebrock.
She was married
to Clarence Archie Bailey and was a member of Saint Paschal Catholic Church.
She was a 30-year volunteer with the American Red Cross and a member of the VFW and American Legion Post 8 Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband, Bailey is survived by two daughters, Judy Callemyn of Halifax and Alice Jane Bongrazio of Tabernacle, N.J.; two stepdaughters, Pamela Wedinhammer of Waynesville, N.C. and Janice Bailey of Jefferson, Ga.; one stepson, Steven Bailey of Allegheny, N.Y.; one brother, John Hebrock of Allegheny, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Wilma Jane Bazow.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Saint Paschal Catholic Church with Father John Kloepfer officiating.
Interment will follow at the Veteran’s cemetery in Amelia.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday and other times at the residence.

Stanford Hoskins
CHATHAM, Va. - Willard Stanford Hoskins, 73, of 869 Greenbay Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001 at the Duke University Medical Center.
Born Feb. 11, 1928 in Pittsylvania County, Hoskins was a son of the late Walter John Hoskins and Mattie Hall Hoskins.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta Crum Hoskins of the residence. Other survivors include four daughters, Tammy H. “Sissy” Wilson of Pittsville, Barbie H. Eanes of Chatham, Angie H. McDaniel of Chatham and Delta H. Mitchell of Rideway; two sons, Michael Hoskins of Axton and David Hoskins of San Diego; four sisters, Betty H. Adkins of Gretna, Louise H. Davis of Chatham, Doris H. Jones of Lynch Station and Mary Hedrick of Chatham; one brother, Wendell G. Hoskins of Chatham; and eight grandchildren.
Hoskins was predeceased by one son, Billy Joe Hoskins and two brothers, Walter J. Hoskins and Edward T. Hoskins.
He was a member of Greenbay Christian Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenbay Christian Church the Rev. Rudolph A. Hearn and the Rev. Harvey Johnson officiating.
Interment will follow at Greenbay Christian Church cemetery in Chatham.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-9 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Nadine Jennings
DANVILLE, Va. - Nadine Dooley Jennings, 85, of 122 Old Mount Cross Road, died at her residence Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001 after one year of declining health.
Born in Danville on July 6, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Bernard and Lula Simmons Dooley.
She was married
to James Jennings, who predeceased her.
Mrs. Jennings spent most of her life in Danville, where she worked for Dan River Inc. for 43 years. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Luther Jennings of Danville and Bobby Jennings of Wilson, N.C.; one brother, Ronald Dooley of Martinsville; one sister, Elaine Hamlett Lewis of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons, Bernard L. Jennings and James Ray Jennings.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.
Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ernest Jones
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Ernest Jones, 75, of 3002 S. 70th St., died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital.
Born in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Ernest Jones Sr. and Mary Cindy Hodge Jones.
Survivors include three children, Clarence, Linda and Lisa Jones; two sisters, Marie Richmond and Mary Ford, both of Yanceyville, N.C., and one brother, Will Warner Williamson of Philadelphia.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia.

Robert Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Irvin Jones, 74, of 3101 Moorefield Bridge Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born in Guilford County, he was the son of John Y. and Dorothy Mae Woods Jones.
He was married
to Cassie N. Jones, who predeceased him. He was a retired loom fixer with Dan River Mills and was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church in Pelham, N.C.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Michael Jones of Winston-Salem, N.C., Jerry Wayne Jones and David N. Jones, both of Danville; two daughters, Sherry L. Majors of Pelham, N.C. and Karen L. Griffin of Siler City, N.C.; one stepson, Dale Newcomb of Danville; one stepdaughter, Donna Pleasant of Danville; three brothers, Clarence Jones and Eugene Jones, both of Reidsville, N.C. and Paul Jones of Atlanta, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by two brothers, Joe Jones and Herman Jones.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Rock of Ages Baptist Church in Reidsville, N.C. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Herbert Chester Martin
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Herbert Chester Martin, 72, of 2200 Virgie Cole Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001 at his residence.
Born April 25, 1929 in Halifax County, he was a son of the late Wilmoth and Lillie Martin.
Martin was the retired owner of a retirement home.
He was married
to Frances Osborne Martin and was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, Martin is survived by one son, Lenwood Martin; one daughter, Cheryl M. Dalman; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Mandy Martin.
Martin was predeceased by one grandson, three sisters and five brothers.
A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Grace Baptist Chruch cemetery in Virgilina.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Rosebud Napier
DANVILLE, Va. - Rosebud Bryant Napier, died Wednesday night, October 24, 2001 in Greensboro, N.C.
Born June 29, 1917 in Whitely County, Kentucky she was the daughter of Charles Bryant and Minnie Montgomery Bryant.
She was married
to Birchie McKinley Napier who predeceased her.
She was a long-time resident of Big Stone Gap where she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Lonesome Pine Country Club, Dogwood Garden Club, Home Demonstration Club, and Order of Eastern Star.
She moved to Danville in 1988 where she was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Danville Duplicate Bridge Club, Wednesday Club, and Christian Women’s Fellowship.
Mrs. Napier is survived by her daughter, Barbara Napier Bennett, son-in-law, Henry G. Bennett, Jr., two granddaughters: Todd Bennett Compton of Danville, and Rangeley Bennett Thornton of Richmond; and two great-grandchildren: Claire Compton and Grayson Compton, both of Danville; and three sisters: Wilma Jan Ellsworth of Scottdale, Arizona, Jenell Farley and Marcella Martin, both of Hobart, Indiana.
She was predeceased by her brother, Willis Gene Bryant of Evarts, Kentucky.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 231 Magnolia Drive.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2001 at 2:00 pm by the Rev. Ronnie Mutter at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap.
Memorials may be made to the Danville Mental Health Association (Alzheimer’s Support Group) or a charity of your choice.

Catherine Saunders
CHATHAM, Va. - Catherine Frances Murrell Saunders, of 532 N. Main St., died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001 at her residence.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Arthur Murrell and Margaret Starling Murrell.
Her husband was the late Wilton Saunders and she also was predeceased by two sisters, Lucille and Sadie and six brothers, Wilfred, Euclide, Frank, Carl, Robert and Thomas.
She was a member of Union Hall Baptist Church in Chatham and served on the usher and nurses’ board.
She is survived by two daughters, Frances Elliott of Upper Marlboro, Md. and Gladys E. Saunders of Charlottesville; one son, William Saunders of Oxon Hill, Md.; one sister, Madeline Patterson; one brother, Charlie Murrell both of Dry Fork; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thurman O. Echols officiating. Interment
will follow in the Chatham cemetery.

Bill Stroud
WATERVIEW, Va. - William Gilbert Stroud, 69, of HCR 67 Box 3411, died suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at the residence.
Born April 5, 1932, in Rockingham, N.C., he was the son of Hobson Richmond Stroud and Jesse Easley Stroud.
He was married
July 3, 1954, to Margie Atkins Stroud, who survives. He moved to Waterview in 1996, after living most of his life in Danville. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for over 20 years. He attended Hermitage Baptist Church in Churchview. He was a United States Navy veteran during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Cathy S. Wallace of Pelham, N.C., Vickie S. Jones and Beth S. Chattin, both of Danville; one son, Danny R. Stroud of Waterview; two brothers, Harvey Stroud of Pelham, N.C. and James E. Stroud of Williamsburg; three sisters, Nancy S. McGee of Danville, Mildred S. Markham of Providence, N.C. and Rachel S. Anderson of New Bern, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Richard Morris officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

CHATHAM, Va. - Mary L. Thompson, 81, of 103 Village Apartments, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001 in Riverside Health Care in Danville.
Born March 5, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late John and Rosa Womack Lipford. She was married
to Harry L. Thompson Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church was retired from Hargrave Military Academy.
Survivors include a daughter, Irene Thompson, of Chatham; two sons, Thomas Thompson of Chatham and Danny Thompson of Pounds; two sisters, Maria Fitzgerald of Chatham and Rosa Richardson of Rocky Mount; two daughters-in-law; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Cherrystone Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd O. Jones officiating. Interment
will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Burial Park.
