DRY FORK, Va. - Virginia Yates Wallace, 87, of 345 Wallace Lane, died Oct. 25, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after four years of declining health and one day at Roman Eagle.
Born Aug. 31, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of David Wilson Yates and Pattie Haley Yates.
She was married
December 1927, to George Lee Wallace, who predeceased her Nov. 19, 1954. She lived all of her life in Dry Fork and was a homemaker. She was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Ruben Wallace, Kenneth Wallace and Dennis Wallace, all of Dry Fork; four daughters, Evelyn W. Oakes of Ruffin, N.C., Virginia W. Jones of Blairs, Mildred W. Emerson of Dry Fork and Betty W. Marshall of Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one son, George David Wallace; one daughter, Margaret W. Pruitt; one sister and two brothers.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Hopewell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clay Knick officiating. Interment
will follow at Wallace Family cemetery on Wallace Lane.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Hopewell United Methodist Church and other times at the residence.

Mary Holt
ALTON, Va. - Mary King Holt, 54, of 1022 Conner-Evans Trail, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 3, 1947, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Mildred O. Moser, who survives, and Overton King.
She was married
to Lonnie T. Holt, who survives. She was employed as a supervisor for J.P.S.
Survivors, in addition to her husband and mother, both of Alton, include two sons, Larry T. Holt of Halifax and Stacy G. Holt of Alton; one daughter, Lisa H. Long of Alton; two sisters, Pauline K. Holt of Clover and Linda K. Conner of Crystal Hill; one brother, Tommy L. King of Nathalie and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Grant Dyer officiating. Interment
will follow at Alton Baptist Church cemetery on Harmony Road.

Lizzie Tate
DANVILLE, Va. - Lizzie Roberts Tate, 81, of 2526 North Main St., died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, after seven years of declining health and five years at Roman Eagle.
Born June 1, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John J. Roberts and Bessie Moorefield Roberts.
She was married
to Julian J. Tate, who predeceased her Nov. 10, 1993. She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church. She lived her life in Pittsylvania County and was a homemaker. She retired in 1987 from the Pittsylvania County School System, where she worked as a cook in the cafeteria at Dan River High School.
Survivors include one son, Clinton Reed Tate of Ringgold; two sisters, Hester R. Hall of Danville and Victoria R. Myers of Gretna; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with Brother Roy Newton and Preacher Bill Owsley officiating.
The family received friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence of Clinton R. Tate, 8716 Kentuck Road in Ringgold.

Nettie Arthur
DANVILLE, Va. - Nettie Hudgins Arthur, 95, formerly of Moffett Street, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home after two months of declining health and five years at Roman Eagle.
Born May 27, 1906, she was the daughter of John Henry Hudgins and Mary Guthrie Hudgins.
She was married
to Bill Arthur, who predeceased her in 1950. She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of The Tabernacle.
Survivors include one brother, Wyllie Hudgins of Danville; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one daughter, Mary Virginia Milam.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. R.J. Barber Jr. and the Rev. Dr. W.L. Wade officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Charlotte Lindsey
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Charlotte Frazer Lindsey of 150 Dogwood Dr. died late Saturday night in The Riverside Health Care Center.
She was born in Madison, Va., August 26, 1916, a daughter of the late Rev. Marshall C. Frazer and Clara Burrus Frazer.
A member of The First Baptist Church and The Danville Golf Club, Mrs. Lindsey was a faculty member of Averett University.
Surviving are her husband of the home: Louis Lindsey. Two sisters: Elizabeth F. Brockman, Orange, Va. and Banks F. Riddell, Doswell, Va. Also a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 2, 2001 from the graveside at Mountain View cemetery by The Reverend Joey Faucette.

DANVILLE, Va. - Maybelle T. Mimms, 71, of 1020 W. Paxton St., died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the residence.
Born Oct. 3, 1930, in Hickory, N.C., she was a daughter of Sue Betty Thomas and John Thomas.
She was married
to William L. Mimms Sr., who predeceased her. She was the head deconess and leader of women’s ministry and community service of Ross Street Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Yolanda D. Mimms of Greenville, S.C. and Deborah Still of Danville; two sons, William L. Mimms of Greer, S.C. and Thomas E. Mimms of Danville; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ross Street Seventh Day Adventist Church with the Rev. Derek L. Adams officiating. Interment

CHATHAM, Va. - Catherine Calloway Adams, 83, of 1152 North Main St., Apt. 2D, died Nov. 2, 2001, at the residence of her daughter, Evelyn Hubbard.
Born June 27, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James and Lula Oakes.
She was married
to George Adams, who predeceased her. She was a member of Belgrove Primitive Baptist Church and was a member of the Sunshine Club.
Survivors include four sons, Raymond Oakes and John Calloway, both of Danville, Sherman Calloway and Curtis Calloway, both of Chatham; two daughters, Rosa Carter of Blairs and Evelyn Hubbard of Chatham; three stepsons, Ben Adams of North Carolina, John Adams of Martinsville and Herman Adams of New Jersey; six stepdaughters, Barbara Inge, Shirley Lee and Jean Hartford, all of New Jersey; Annie B. Clark of Union Hall, Bernice Carter and Mary Carter, both of Martinsville; 43 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Howerton Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Buford Craighead officiating. Interment
will follow at Belgrove Church cemetery.

Evelyn Barrett
DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn Rowland Barrett, 80, of 4002 Pittwood Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Stratford Health Center, after eight years of declining health and two weeks in the hospital.
Born Aug. 8, 1921, in the Witt community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Patrick Henry Rowland and Lelia Florence Ashworth Rowland.
She was married
Dec. 30, 1948, to Roy Barrett, who survives. She was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. She lived in Danville and Houston, Texas before returning to Danville in 1984. She was a homemaker and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the WAAC.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three sisters, Mary Louise R. Wilson of Roanoke, Frances R. Matkins of Dallas, Texas and Florence R. Lewis of Danville; three brothers, Charlie W. Rowland of Orlando, Fla., Robert L. Rowland of Los Gatos, Calif. and Patrick H. Rowland of Tucson, Ariz.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by three sisters, Kathryn R. Simpson, Nancy R. Moore and Inez Rowland and one brother, Jasper James “Jack” Rowland.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Wayne Crews officiating.

DANVILLE, Va. - Jewel Cumbo Chavers, 67, of 3566 Franklin Turnpike, Apt. No. 1, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 31, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. after declining health over the past year.
Born June 1, 1934, in Washington County, she was the daughter of Ernest C. Cumbo and Stella Arnold Cumbo.
She was married
to Henry Allen Chavers, who survives.
She lived most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include four sons, Butch James and Frank Rella, both of Danville, Tony Rella of Callands and Bobby Rella of Winthrop, Mass.; one sister, Evelyn Adkins of Callands; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two sisters, Lorraine Spence Horton and Irene Pruitt.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Full Gospel Fellowship Church with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Betty Cumbow
DANVILLE, Va. - Betty Chapman Cumbow, 66, of 170 Still St., died Thursday morning, Nov. 1, 2001, at the Danville Regional Medical Center emergency room after one year of declining health.
Born April 6, 1935, in Saltville, she was the daughter of Roscoe Earl Chapman and Fannie Smith Chapman.
She was married
to the Rev. Charles Cumbow, who predeceased her in 1998. She lived in Danville for 22 years and was a member of the First Church of the Living God on Edmonds Street where she was a member of the Victory Singers Choir. She worked for Bassett Walker in Martinsville for ten years before her retirement at the age of 55.
Survivors include five sisters, Patsy Smith, Peggy Durham and Sue Pinkelton, all of Danville, Lucille Frize and Linda Johnson, both of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at First Church of the Living God with the Rev. Hassell Priddy, the Rev. Stanley Savage and the Rev. Bud Whitfield officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
