Claude J. Dalton
CLEVELAND, Tenn. -Claude J. Dalton, age 90, of Cleveland, TN, a former resident of Danville for 84 years, passed away on October 31, 2001.
He was the son of the late George and Itsaca Dalton.
C.J. was owner and manager of the old Country Club Esso on West Main Street for many years. He was well known as an owner/operator and mechanic of other service stations for over 30 years. He was a used car dealter until he retired in 1995. Upon retiring he moved to Cleveland, TN to be closer to his family.
He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in the Pacific. He was a member of the North Cleveland Baptist Church in Cleveland, and a former member of the Schoolfield Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret G. Dalton; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Kay Dalton; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Larry Hillard, all of Cleveland, TN; five granddaughters, Marie Dalton and Joy Montgomery, of Cleveland, Cathy Dalton and Amy Hillard of Washington, D.C and Lori Lankford, of Atlanta, GA; two great grandson, Jacob Montgomery of Cleveland and Samuel Lankford of Atlanta; and one great granddaughter, Grace Lankford of Atlanta, two sisters, Ora Hodge and Gracie Sours, several nieces and nephews, all of Danville, VA.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001 at 2:00 pm from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Turbyfill officiating. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Friday night from 7:00-8:30 pm at Townes Funeral Home.
Mary Daniel
VIRGILINA, Va. - Mary Rosa Daniel, 81, of 3002 East Hitesburg Road, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 31, 1920, in Halifax County, she was an employee of Russell-Stover and was a member of Hitesburg Baptist Church.
Survivors include a number of cousins.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Hitesburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Vance Midgett and the Rev. Bill Wilkins officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Neil Daniel, 4118 Aarons Creek Road in Virgilina.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Hitesburg Baptist Church.

Pauline Davis
HALIFAX, Va. - Pauline Hodnett Davis, formerly of 510 Oak Lane in Halifax, died Nov. 2, 2001, at Woodview Nursing Home in South Boston after 3 1/2 years as a resident of Summerset Court.
Born March 2, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Albert M. Hodnett and Rose H. Hodnett.
She was married
to Claude S. Davis, who predeceased her Nov. 1, 1993. She lived in Danville, Alexandria for nine years, and Halifax since 1949. She was a member of Beth-Car Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Doris D. Hodnett of Fredricksburg, Mary Frances Dayvault of Macon, Ga. and Margaret D. Fallen of Halifax; two sons, William E. “Billy” Davis of Ringgold and James A. Davis of Roanoke; two sisters, Dema H. Chandler of South Boston and Clara H. Forester of Virginia Beach; two brothers, A.M. Hodnett of South Boston and Herbert Hodnett of Martinsville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Hodnett Family cemetery on Route 360 with the Rev. Terry Blevins officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of William E. “Billy” Davis, 1820 Country Side Drive in Ringgold.

Jacob ‘Jake’ Day III
DANVILLE, Va. - Jacob “Jake” William Day III, 48, of 119 Raleigh Court, died Monday morning, Oct. 29, 2001, at Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Feb. 12, 1953, in Danville, he was the son of Margaret Payne Day, who survives and Jacob William Day II.
He was married
to Tina Robson Day, who survives. He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. He formerly worked for the City of Danville as an electrician technician.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, include oen son, William Scott Day of the residence and one daughter, Ellen Marie Day of the residence.
The private graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Leemont cemetery with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating. Interment
will follow at Leemont cemetery in Danville.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home, 2025 N. Main St. in Danville and other times at the residence.

ENDICOTT, N.Y. - Louis A. Esposito, 74, died Oct. 27, 2001, in Greensboro, N.C.
Born July 18, 1927, in Endicott, he was married
to Rose, who survives.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Danville, Va. and employed by the Town of Union.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Jack Poland and two grandsons.
The funeral was held in Endicott, N.Y.
Robert Ferguson
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Henry Ferguson, 81, of 265 Pineview Road, Lot 12, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at the residence.
Born July 27, 1920, in Halifax County, he was a son of Raymond Ferguson and Fannie Ferguson.
He was married
Oct. 31, 1952, to Mary Poteat Ferguson, who survives. He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County and the Danville area. He worked for Dan River Inc. in 4B Dress of the Schoolfield Division as a draw tex operator’s helper until his retirement due to health reasons. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Elizabeth Harl of Orlando, Fla. and Vickie Draine and Betty F. White, both of Danville; one son, Robert R. Ferguson of Lexington, N.C.; two stepsons, Wesley Poteat of Patrick Springs and Delbert Bohannon of New Bern, N.C.; three brothers, James T. Ferguson of Providence, N.C., Berkley Ferguson of New York and Stylus Ferguson of Danville; two sisters, Estelle F. Mitchell of Danville and Ida F. Gillenwater of Martinsville; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one son, Clyde W. Ferguson.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Rick Lancaster officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

John Foster Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - John Stephen Foster Jr., 23, of 899 Luna Lake Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center as the result of a motorcycle accident.
Born July 4, 1978, he was the son of John S. Foster Sr. and Patsy Arlene Adkins Foster, who survive.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a self-employed mechanic.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one son, Bradley Stephen Foster of Dry Fork; two sisters, Wendy Lynn Foster of the residence and Priscilla Irene Piercy of Pelham, N.C.; one brother, Ellis Paul Burnett Jr. of Danville; maternal grandfather, Arnold Adkins of Axton and paternal grandfather, John Nix Foster of Danville.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Myrtle Irene Taylor and paternal grandmother, Margaret A. Foster.

Bessie Gilbert
LONG ISLAND, Va. - Bessie Maude Gilbert, 60, of 1215 Cody Road, died Tuesday night, Oct. 30, 2001, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 4, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Gracie Stone Ward, who surivives and James T. Ward.
She was married
to Joe L. Gilbert, who survives. She was a homemaker and a member of the Staunton Baptist Church in Long Island.
Survivors, in addition to her mother of Gretna and husband of the residence, include one daughter, Janet Witcher and one son, Joe Thomas Gilbert, both of Hurt; three brothers, James William Ward, Lawrence “Tommie“ Ward and Charlie Ward, all of Grenta; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Jane Godsey
GRETNA, Va. - Jane Hill Godsey, 64, of 2570 Boxwood Road, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at the residence after 16 months of declining health.
Born Aug. 31, 1937, in Danville, she was the daughter of Edgar Hill and Virginia Barker Hill.
She was married
in 1959 to Paul Johnson Godsey, who survives. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and lived her life in Blairs where she was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one son, Mike Godsey of Mount Holley, N.C.; one daughter, Deborah G. Jacquemin of the residence; two sisters, Dorothy H. Fugua of Reidsville, N.C. and Betty H. Yeatts of Dry Fork and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Brother Roy Newton officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Christopher ‘Chris’ Gunnell
RINGGOLD, Va. - Christopher “Chris” William Gunnell, 16, of 537 Kentuck Church Road, died Friday evening, Nov. 2, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 16, 1985, in Chapel Hill, N.C., he was the son of Frankie W. Gunnell and Diana Francis Gunnell, who survive.
He was a junior at Dan River High School, where he was a member of the golf team, baseball team, basketball team and cross country team. He participated in the church basketball league. He was a member of the art club and BETA club at Dan River High School. He attended Laurel Grove Baptist Church where he was in the youth department of the church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents of the residence, include one brother, Frankie Wayne Gunnell Jr. of the residence; one sister, Ashley Elizabeth Gunnell of the residence and paternal grandfather, Lynwood N. Gunnell of Danville. He was the nephew of Betty Francis, David and Tammy Francis, Tammy and Tommy Edwards, Pat Francis, Jeffrey and Gracie Gunnell, and the late Billy Francis.
He was predeceased by paternal grandmother, Dorothy B. Gunnell and maternal grandparents, “Bill” Francis and Beulah B. Francis.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Owsley officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
A special visitation for friends, classmates, and students will be at 4-5 p.m. Tuesday and the family will receive friends 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at the North Main Baptist Church gym building and at other times at the residence.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Phillip Hudgins Hackney, 88, of 1138 Wolf Trap Road, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at the residence of his son.
Born May 7, 1913, in Halifax County, he was married
to Hattie Lamberth Hackney, who predeceased him. He was a retired farmer and JPS employee. He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Clyde Hackney of Madison; two sisters, Mary Seamster of Scottsburg and Martha Powell of Halifax; one brother, Ollie A. Hackney of Halifax; three granddaughters; four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by one son, Carroll Hackney and three brothers, Lee Hackney, Charlie Hackney and Guy Hackney.
