Thomas Harris
DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas George Harris, 67, of 439 Martin Road, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at the residence.
Born Sept. 1, 1934, in Patrick County, he was a son of William Thomas Harris and Bertha Cleo Cochran Harris.
He was married
to Doris Mildred Travis Harris, who predeceased him in 1996. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He lived in Danville for the past 50 years, where he worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 22 years before his retirement due to disability. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Local No. 831 union of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.
Survivors include one daughter, Kimberly Harris of Danville; one son, William Thomas Harris of Danville; one sister, Goldie Roberts of Fieldale; one brother, Frank Harris of Fieldale; one stepson, Danny Travis of Danville; one granddaughter; and one stepgranddaughter.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by three sisters and three brothers.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of his daughter, 141 Brookside Ave., Lot 3, off Elizabeth Street.

Elsie Wilkinson Haskins
DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Wilkinson Haskins, a most precious person to her family, 77, of 2132 Spencer Street, Danville, Virginia, passed away October 20, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two months of declining health and two months in the hospital.
Born October 15, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, she was the daughter of William Yancey Wilkinson (deceased) and Annie Hayden Wilkinson (deceased).
A member of Third Avenue Christian Church, she was a member of the Women’s Social Circle at Third Ave. Christian Church. She lived her entire life in Ringgold, Chatham, and Danville, Virginia. She retired in 1988 from Durham Hosiery working with Quality Control although she continued with her talent as an accomplished seamstress until her death. Her greatest treasures in life were being a devoted mother and loving grandmother.
Survivors include daughters Winnie H. Fillion (Ralph A. Fillion) of Danville, VA and Sandra H. Bell (Larry M. Bell) of Advance, N.C.; son Keith Alan Haskins (Freeda L. Haskins) of Anderson, S.C.; sisters, Barbara W. Dillard (Henry L. Dillard) of Danville, VA adn Jean W. Neal (Calvin A. Neal) of Ringgold, VA; granddaughter Michele Rene’ Ragsdale of Gastonia, N.C.; grandson Neal Ragsdale, Jr. (Christi K. Ragsdale) of Danville, VA; granddaughter Angela R. Hyatt (William Hyatt) of Danville, VA; grandson Kevin E. Haskins of Anderson, S.C.
She was predeceased by a sister, Shirley W. Snead; two brother, Ralph W. Wilkinson & Scotty Wilkinson; a grandson, Alan Haskins and a granddaughter, LeAnn Haskins.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1st at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Freddy Vicks & the Reverend Leroy Clack officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence, 2132 Spencer Street, Danville, Virginia.

Russell Inman
BROSVILLE, Va. - Mr. Russell Norman Inman of 944 Inman Road in the Brosville Community died late Friday night at The Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for the past two years. He had been a resident in the hospital since Tuesday.
Born in Pittsylvania Co., Va., January 27, 1912, a son of the late Fletcher Dolphus Inman and Ella Scearce Inman.
Mr. Inman was married
to the late Della Owen Inman. He was retired from Dan River, Inc. and was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Inman was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army, 60th Chemical Depot Company.
Predeceased by four brothers: Nelson Inman, James Inman, Raymond Inman and Frank Inman. Predeceased by three sisters: Ola I. Rose, Gracie I. Dixon and Janie I. Scearce.
Surviving one brother: Clyde P. Inman, Sr. of the Sharon Community. A special friend, Jim Willie McMillian of Axton. Also a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 A.M. from The Owens Family cemetery in Brosville by The Reverend Steven Greer. Military graveside honors will be given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post #1097.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Sunday from 7 to 8 P.M. and at other times will be at the residence, 944 Inman Road in the Brosville Community.

Bernard Jiles
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Mr. Bernard Carlton Jiles, 31, of 432 Franklin Ave. Brooklyn, NY, died Saturday, October 27, 2001 in the Interfaith Hospital, Brooklyn, NY, after months of declining health.
He was the son of Bernard Wayne Walton and Lottie Earline Jiles. Born January 27, 1970 in New York. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Sussex, Va., and was a 1988 graduate of Petersburg Senior High School in Petersburg, Va., he also attended Tunstall High School in Dry Fork, Va. and Norfolk State University and later he graduated from City Media Arts College in New York City, New York.
He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Wayne; 1 sister, Lisa; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Prince Edward Jones; Edward Walton and Dora Essie Easley Walton.
His survivors are father, Bernard Walton of Brooklyn, NY; 1 brother, James Edward Porter, III (Wanda) of Brooklyn, NY; 2 neices, Sherre M. Porter and Ayanna Porter both of Brooklyn, NY; 2 nephews, Corey S. Visitation will be one hour before funeral services. Graveside rites will be conducted Sunday November 4, 2001 2:30 PM at the Walton and Emerson Family cemetery in Dry Fork, Va.; Rev. John Clark; officiating.

The procession will assemble and leave the residence of Carlton and Annie Walton 7:00 AM Saturday morning in route to Tucker’s Funeral Chapel in Petersburg, Va. for the final tribute and celebration of the life of Mr. Bernard Carlton Jiles.

Gypsy Kropff
SALEM, Va. - Gypsy Burch Kropff, 58, died Oct. 28, 2001.
Born Jan. 6, 1943, in Danville, she was the daughter of Pauline Burch and W.A. Burch.
She was married
38 years to Joseph L. Kropff, who survives. She graduated from Whitmell High School and attended Ferrum College and Va. Western. She was employed with Andrew Lewis High School, Salem High School, Greenvale Nursery School, Roanoke Scottish Rite and Information Products.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include daughter, Mitzi Simmons of Salem; son Chad Kropff of Kissimmee, Fla.; two grandchildren and one brother, Michael Burch of Danville.
The funeral was held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Valley Funeral Service with Pastor Mike Flinchum and the Rev. T.E. Simmons officiating. Interment
was held at Church Hill cemetery in Salem.
The viewing was held 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Valley Funeral Service.

Virginia Lawson
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Samuels Lawson, 80, of 246 Belaire Drive, died instantly Thursday morning, Nov. 1, 2001, as the result of an automobile accident.
Born Aug. 17, 1921, in Elkton, she was the daughter of Clee Samuels and Myrtle Hitt Samuels.
She was married
to Arthur William Lawson, who predeceased her in 1978. She lived in Danville for 45 years and worked at Dan River Inc. for nearly 20 years. She attended Riverview Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Patsy Self of Grottoes, Betty L. Wade and Judy Atkinson, both of Danville; one stepson, Alton Lawson of Luray; one sister, Alice Davis of Elkton; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one son, Arthur W. Lawson Jr.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Duane Blevins officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Mazonia Lester
DANVILLE, Va. - Mazonia Scearce Lester, 90, of the Westover Community, Danville, Va., died on October 30, 2001 at the residence of her daughter after declining health for the past 3 years.
Born on March 11, 1925 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence W. Scearce and the late Bessie Hundley Scearce.
She was married
on April 24, 1943 to the late Roy Wilson Lester who died on September 10, 1992. Mrs. Lester had lived all of her life in the Westover Community where she was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church on North Main Street.
Survivors include Daughter Gail Lester Coon of Danville, Va.; Son in Law Arthur R. Coon of Danville, Va.; a Special Granddaughter Karen Denise Smith of Danville, Va.; Sister Barbara S. Keith of Danville, Va.; Brothers, C. Waverly Scearce and Warner P. Scearce, both of Danville, Va.
The funeral will be held Thursday, November 1st at 4:00 p.m. from the Graveside in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Reverend Daryl Joyce. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Alton ‘Al’ Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Alton “Al” Moore, 67, of 338 Brentwood Drive, died Thursday morning, Nov. 1, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 2, 1934, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was the son of Julius Levi Moore and Ora Lemmons Moore.
He was married
to Margie Marie Tickle Moore, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and was a retired automobile mechanic. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three sons, Chuck Moore, Pernell Moore, both of Danville and Lewis Moore of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one daughter, Penny Lynn Moore of Danville; one brother, Johnny Moore of Pelham, N.C.; three sisters, Ila Bray, Carrie Barber and Annie Cox, all of Pelham, N.C. and one grandson.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one daughter, Frances Ann Moore.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Blessed Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian Edwards officiating. Interment
will follow at Danview cemetery in Eden, N.C.

HALIFAX, Va. - Sandra Marie Murphy, 38, of 1032 Bench Lane, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born July 21, 1963, in Fredericksburg, she was the daughter of Earl Murphy, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to her father of Caroline County, include stepmother Kathy Murphy of Caroline County; son, Jeffrey Whitman of Ohio; sister, Tammy Hill of Halifax and brother, Michael Murphy of Caroline County.
The memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the residence.

Mamie T. Nash
DANVILLE, Va. - Mamie T. Nash, 86, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Piney Forest Nursing Center.
Born July 24, 1914, in Keeling, she was the daughter of Jim and Daisy Cardwell Thompson.
She was married
to Edward Nash, who predeceased her.
She was the last survivor of her immediate family. Survivors include one son, William B. Nash of Danville.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one daughter, Neal Nash.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at New Mine Creek Progressive Primitive Baptist Church in Blairs with Elder Keith Shuler officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
