Evelyn Murray

VIRGILINA, Va. - Evelyn Burnett Murray, 77, of 2128 Gills Mountain Road, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 25, 1924, in Mecklenburg County, she was married to James Edward Murray Sr., who predeceased her. She was employed in the medical records department at Halifax Regional Hospital and was a member of Union United Church of Christ, where she was a Sunday school teacher and member of the Women’s Fellowship. She was a charter member, several-time president and 5th District president from 1976-1978 of the American Legion Auxillary Post 337. She was a member and former president of the Virgilina Women’s Club. She was a former member of Henry Woodall Chapter 480 Eastern Star and was active in Cub Scout work for many years. She was a member of the Women’s Volunteer Chapter at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Survivors include three sons, James E. “Jimmy” Murray Jr. of Mebane, N.C. and William B. “Billy” Murray and Henry E. Murray, both of Virgilina; two sisters, Betty Coghill of Victoria and Frances Maddox of Pike Road, Ala.; one brother, Jack Burnett of Buffalo Junction; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by four brothers and three sisters.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Virgilina cemetery with the Rev. Michael Wilburn officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Pryor Watson

DANVILLE, Va. - Pryor Travis Watson, 91, formerly of 855 Melrose Ave., died 7:50 a.m. Monday at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born July 8, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Edward Watson and Mary Hundley Watson.
He was married 66 years to Hazel Fisher Watson, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and worked for Danville Laundry as a truck driver for many years. He was a charter member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Emmaus Sunday School Class, the Men’s Fellowship and the Echos.
Survivors include one daughter, Delores W. Thomasson of Danville; one son, Gerald F. Watson of Danville; two brothers, Carylye Watson of Hoffman, N.C., and Charlie Watson of High Point, N.C.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Duncan officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 855 Melrose Ave.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Building Fund, 3090 North Main Street, Danville, Va., 24540.

Mildred Anderson

DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Carter Anderson, 86, of 2344 Riverside Drive, Danville, Virginia, died Thursday, November 8, 2001, at Riverside Health Care center after eight months of declining health and four years in HCC.
Born September 6, 1915, in Keeling, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William Henry Carter and the late Susan Richardson Carter.
She was married Sept. 25, 1937, to Glenn Curtis Anderson who predeceased her May 4, 1991. She was of the Baptist faith. She lived her life in the Danville area. She was retired from Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she worked as a manager in the kitchen department.
Survivors include son James William Anderson and wife Betty of Danville, VA; son Curtis Ray Anderson and wife Martha of Lynchburg, VA; son Charles E. Anderson and wife April of Staunton, VA; grandsons Glenn Anderson of Forest, VA, Jeff Anderson of Richmond, VA, Charles Anderson, Jr. of Capon Bridge, W. VA and James Anderson of Fishersville, VA; great-grandchildren, Taylor Anderson and Andrew Anderson, both of Forest, VA.
The funeral will be held at the graveside at Highland Burial Park Sunday at 2:00 P.M. with The Reverend Tom Brown & The Reverend Jeff Wright officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the James W. Anderson residence, 3923 Highway 29 North, Danville, Virginia.

Laura Andrews

DANVILLE, Va. - Laura McCormick Andrews, 86, of 6589 Whitmell School Road, died suddenly Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after six days in the hospital.
Born May 8, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William E. McCormick and Laura Betty Coleman McCormick.
She was married Nov. 22, 1934, to Joseph T. Andrews, who predeceased her Jan. 10, 1980. She lived her life in Pittsylvania County where she was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Rita A. Dodd of Danville; one son, Ronald W. Andrews of Madison Heights; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne Crews officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the residence of her daughter 6661 Whitmell Church Road.
Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Marie Bennett

DANVILLE, Va. - Marie Hairston Bennett, 88, of 206 Beavers Mill Road, Apt. 2, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at the Ostiopathic Community Hospital in Harrisburg, Pa.
Born March 27, 1913, in Danville, she was the daughter of Lawson Hairston and Pearlie Hairston.
She was married to Eugene Bennett, who predeceased her. She was employed by Southern Processors for many years prior to her retirement.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Bennett of Harrisburg, Pa. and one son, Tommy Bennett of Hampton.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Interment icon will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Barbara Jackson, 256 Kenmore Drive in Danville.

Susie Chaney

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Susie Conner Chaney, 89, of 1071 James D. Hagood Highway, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at the residence.
Born Jan. 28, 1912 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Stanhope Conner and Kate Conner.
She was married to Lewis Albert Chaney, who survives. She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of South Boston, include one son, Flournoy Yancey of Cluster Springs; two daughters, Florine Roark of Petersburg and Shirley Puryear of South Boston; two stepsons, Ronnie Chaney of South Boston and Robert Chaney of San Diego, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Christine Fensterer of Halifax; two sisters, Lucille Cassada of Ringgold and Lillian Trickey of South Boston; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one grandson, Mitchell Yancey; one stepson, James Chaney; two brothers, Wardell Conner and Easley Conner and three sisters, Mabel Conner, Frances Atkins and Elizabeth Lester.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Black Walnut Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Welsh, the Rev. Melvin Bradshaw and the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating. Interment icon will follow at Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery in Cluster Springs.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Ave., South Boston.

Welford Covington Sr.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Welford Allen Covington Sr., 62, of 1419 Hodges St., died Nov. 5, 2001, at the residence.
Born June 6, 1939, in Halifax County, he was the son of Eddie Ray Covington and Curtis Lillian Fallen Covington.
He was married to Barbara Ann Covington, who survives. He was a member of Revelation Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of South Boston, include three sons, Allen Covington Jr., Dwayne Covington and Mark Covington, all of South Boston; three granddaughters; two brothers, C.D. Covington and Marshall Covington, both of South Boston and two sisters, Almeda Seamster of South Boston and Jean Dalton of Ringgold.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Joyce East

CHATHAM, Va. - Joyce Mays East, 57, of 548 Slatesville Road, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at the residence.
Born Nov. 28, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles Perkins Mays and Gladys Newbern Mays, who survives.
She was married to Russell H. East Jr., who survives. She was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for many years and was the treasurer of Shockoe Baptist Church. She operated a greenhouse and prepared floral arrangements for the church for years. She was a retired public school teacher and received her bachelor’s degree at Averett College and a master’s degree in education from U.Va. She was the treasurer of the 640 Community Rescue Squad Ladies Auxilliary.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence and mother of Danville, include one son, the Rev. Russell H. East III of Chatham; four sisters, Ellen M. Brumfield of Chatham, Fannie M. Ragsdale of Blairs, Sarah M. Farson of Vernon Hill and Dale M. Farmer of Keeling; four brothers, Carl P. Mays of Blaris, Harvey M. Mays and Jackie N. Mays, both of Goode and Charles W. Mays of Ringgold.
She was predeceased, in addition to her father, by one brother, Ted P. Mays and two sisters, Betty M. Yeatts and Virginia F. Mays.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Ted Smith officiating. Interment icon will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Shockoe Baptist Church and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials may be made to 640 Community Rescue Squad or Riceville, Java Volunteer Fire Department.

Teresa Echols

DANVILLE, Va. - Teresa Watlington Echols, 32, of 1061 Vandola Church Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at the residence.
Born Oct. 27, 1969, in the Glenwood Community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Curtis Watlington and Diane Johnson Watlington, who survive.
She was married Oct. 3, 1991 to Mark Wayne Echols, who survives. She was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church. She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County and was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence and parents, include one daughter, Carrie Marie Echols of the residence; stepson, Michael Wayne Echols of the residence; brother, Robert Lee Watlington of Danville and one sister, Angela Watlington Duncan of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Walter Yancey officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Caroline Echols, 1209 Vandola Church Road.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541 or Bachelors Hall Volunteer Fire Department, 1301 Berry Hill Road, Danville, Va. 24541.

Myrtle Fowler

DANVILLE, Va. - Myrtle M. Fowler, 78, of 237 Wooding Ave., died 2:50 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born April 16, 1923, in Aregon, Ga., she was the daughter of Claude Cecil Fowler and Mattie Lou Fowler.
She lived most of her life in Danville, where she resided on Wooding Avenue for over 30 years.
She had been a patient at Roman Eagle for two years. She was of the Baptist faith.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dale Proctor officiating.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.
