Herman Burnell Keen Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Herman Burnell Keen Sr., 80, of 261 Belmede Court, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 1, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Adams Keen.

He was married to Janie F. Keen.

Survivors include six daughters, Mary Keen, Donna Reynolds, Martha White, Kathy Hightower and Holly Glass, all of Danville, and Thelma Johnson, of Milton, N.C.; two sons, Costell Keen and George Keen, both of Danville; and one brother, George Keen, of Pittsburgh, Pa.

He was predeceased by his parents and his wife.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Camp Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Willie Sherman officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Garden Cemetery.

Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Minnie Alice Luck

DANVILLE, Va. - Minnie Alice Luck, 82, of 241 Sylvan Road, died after a lengthy illness Thursday, July 18, 2002, at her residence.

Born June 17, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Spencer and Mary Jones Luck.

Survivors include four daughters, Janie Watkins, Fay Lewis, Ella Ferguson and Dorothy Davis, all of Danville; one son, Gene Luck of Danville; two sisters, Ollie West of Danville, and Ruby Dixon of New York; two brothers, Willie G. Luck and Harper Luck, both of Danville; 25 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 37 great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, one son, two sisters and one brother.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Dillard officiating. Interment will follow in Shockoe Baptist Church in Java.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Bernice Philby

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice Johnson Philby, 93, of 103 Hayes Court, died July 20, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born on February 6, 1909, in Sioux City, Iowa, she was a daughter of Robert H. Johnson and Anna S. Johnson.

She was predeceased by her husband, Loran Philby. She attended Fairview United Methodist Church.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Porter and two brothers, Milton Johnson and Clarence Johnson.

The graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Linwood Daniel officiating.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Homer Witcher

CHATHAM, Va. - Homer Witcher, 81, of 644 North Main Street, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 5, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Floyd Witcher and Anna James Witcher.

He was married to Odella Witcher. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Morrison Trucking Company and Price Cab Company. He was an Army veteran and a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of the residence; one daughter, Deborah White of Richmond; one sister, Mabel Adkins of Callands; four brothers, David Witcher and Moncey Witcher of Chatham, Bill Witcher of Callands, and Floyd Witcher Jr. of Glade Hill; three granddaughters; and one great grandson.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Charlie Witcher and Stanford Witcher.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Ross officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home.

Ernest W. Bates

CHATHAM, Va. - Ernest W. Bates, age 65, of 2364 Spring Garden Road, Chatham, Virginia, died July 7, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville. Mr. Bates was born May 29, 1937, in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late Muncie William Bates and Kate Pruitte Bates.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen King Bates of Chatham, one daughter Janet B. Archer and her husband Ron of Tiptonville, TN; one son, Ernest W. Bates, Jr. and his wife Cathy of Chatham; one sister, Lois B. Lewis of Danville; one brother, Buford Bates of Chatham; one nephew, Buford Bates, Jr.; three grandchildren, Susan Marie Bates, Ronald Archer, and Travis Archer.

A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at 11:00 AM from the Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bill Bates. The family will receive friends at the residence. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Willard "PaPa" Bethune

DANVILLE, Va. - Willard E. "PaPa" Bethune, 73, of 327 Summit Road, died July 6, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 22, 1928, in Fort Payne, Ala., he was married to Minnie Lamb Bethune, who survives. He had lived in Rossville, Ga. prior to moving to Danville where he lived for the past 22 years. He had retired from Dan River Inc. where he had worked as a supervisor and he and his wife provided child day care in their home for several years.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Becky Van Donsler of Knoxville, Iowa and Debbie Biro of Danville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment will follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

James Canupp Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - James Thomas Canupp Sr., 69, of 314 Lansbury Drive, died July 7, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center following declining health for the past three years and spending the last three weeks in the hospital.

Born on July 8, 1932, in Monroe, NC, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Canupp Sr. and Evie Lee Gibbons Canupp, who survives.

He was married to Marie Fitch Canupp on November 28, 1959, who survives. Mr. Canupp had lived most of his life in Martinsville and Danville. He was a graduate of Martinsville High School and a graduate of Elon College. Mr. Canupp had retired from Laynes Copy Products where he had worked in sales for a number of years. He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and a former member of the Danville Jaycee's and the Danville Optimist Club. Mr. Canupp had coached or served as assistant Youth Baseball Coach for the Danville Little League, Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle and Connie Mack leagues. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Martinsville, Va., include one son, James Thomas Canupp Jr. of Danville, Va.; one daughter, Pam Canupp Whitehead of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Robert Lee Canupp Jr. of Martinsville, Va., and Franklin Canupp of Martinsville, Va.; and one grandson, Thomas Daniel Whitehead.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, July 9th at 11:00 A.M. from the Moffett Memorial Baptist Church by the Reverend Steve Carlton and the Rev. Lee Ellison. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park with military honors by American Legion Post #1097.

The family will be at the residence 314 Lansbury Drive.

The family suggest that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to American Cancer Society, 1079 Spruce Street, Martinsville, Va., or to the Danville Humane Society or to the charity of choice.

Ruth Cockman

HALIFAX, Va. - Ruth Martin Cockman, 82, of 3033 James D. Hagood Highway, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born April 25, 1920, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Douglas V. "Dugar" Martin and Ethel Lue Martin Johnson.

She was married to Thomas S. Cockman, who predeceased her. She was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Patsy Cockman Wilmouth of South Boston; one brother, Douglas E. Martin of South Boston; three sisters, Virginia "Helen" Mingo of Seal Beach, Calif., Meria Harris of Scottsburg and Rosalea Lacks of Clover; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband, by three brothers and three sisters.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Dan River Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Lane officiating.

The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Brooks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Farrish

PELHAM, N.C. - James Earl Farrish, of 3846 Loy Drive Allison Road, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at his residence as a result of an accident.

Born Dec. 6, 1935 in Caswell County, he was the son of James Farrish and Ola Mae Foster Farrish.

He was married to Mattie Lue Stokes Farrish, who survives. He was a member of Spirit Filled Holiness Church in Danville and was employed by Copland Fabrics in Burlington prior to retirement.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Bobby Farrish of Burlington; four daughters, Brenda Carol Elmore and Vivian Farrish, both of Yanceyville, Hattie Boswell of Pelham and Audrey D. Farrish of Durham; one sister, Gladys Odelia Brown of Fayettville; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Spirit Filled Holiness Church with Pastor Catherine Keen officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The viewing will be held 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.

All arrangements are entrusted to Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville.

Selma Olive

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Selma Webster Olive, 83, of 487 US Highway 158 East, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Autumn Care in Biscoe.

Born Feb. 26, 1918, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of John Wilbur Webster and Mattie Lunsford Webster.

She was married to Roy Lee Olive, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and member of Beulah Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Joyce O. Slaughter of Yanceyville, Nancy L. Oliver of Concord and Melinda McSherry of Danville; one sister, Mildred Tatum of Leasburg; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband, by five sisters and four brothers.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Grubbs and Charles Briggs officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Marley Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Joyce O. Slaughter in Yanceyville.

Lloyd Owen

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Lloyd Carter Owen, 83, of 11124 River Road, died July 8, 2002 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Jan. 2, 1919 in Bedford County, he was the son of William Moorman Owen and Lillian Carter Owen.

He was married to Penta Turner Owen, who survives. He was an army veteran of WWII and was a member of Arbor Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of South Boston, include one son, John Thurman Owen of South Boston; two daughters, Ruth O. Gregory and Carole O. Lovelace, both of South Boston; one sister, Jeanette O. Anderson of South Boston; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Aubrey Lee Owen, William Harold Owen and Clifford Thomas Owen.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd Smith and the Rev. Tracey Allred officiating. Interment will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Eunice Simpson

GRETNA, Va. - Eunice Dalton Simpson, 91, of Gretna, died Thursday, April 25, 2002 at Gretna Health Care Center.

Born Sept. 7, 1910 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Sam David Dalton and Ida Pickeral Dalton.

She was married to Elder Denver Lee Simpson, who predeceased her. She was a member of Springfield Primitive Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Carl Simpson of Rock Hill, S.C. and Coy Simpson of Gretna; one daughter, Carolyn Gay of Buena Vista; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one son, Grady Simpson; five brothers, Raymond Dalton, Ollie Dalton, Giles Dalton, Lonnie Dalton and Martin Dalton; and two sisters, Sallie Dalton and May Belle Dalton.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Springfield Primitive Baptist Church with Elders C.B. Davis and Troy Simpson officiating. Interment will follow at Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Sunday at Springfield Primitive Baptist Church and at other times at the residence of her daughter-in-law, Dolores Simpson, 109 N. Franklin Blvd. in Gretna.

Vincent Bateman

DANVILLE, Va. – Vincent Harold Bateman, 50, of 580 Willow Briar Lane, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Bowman Gray Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Born September 28, 1951, in Danville, he was a son of Samuel Oakey Bateman, who predeceased him, and Eva Scearce Bateman, who survives.

He lived in the Brosville community and was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Tunstall High School and attended Averett College.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include one sister, JoAnn Bateman Adams of Brosville; one half sister, Reba Whitt of northern Va.; and two brothers, Vincent Bateman of Rocky Mount and Bobby Bateman of Brosville.

He was predeceased by one brother, Samuel O. Bateman Jr. and his birth mother, Evelyn Wright Bateman.

The graveside service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dave Rochford officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of Eva Scearce Bateman, 556 Willow Briar Lane.
