Ruth Bryant
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Shipley Bryant passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 31, 2001 at the Riverside Health Care Center in Danville, VA. after a brief illness. Mrs. Bryant was a retired English teacher who taught at Tunstall High School.
She was a respected member of the American Association of University Women. She resided in Spring Garden most of her life and there she established the communitys first Girl Scout troop. She was buried on November 2, 2001 in Bristol, TN. at Glenwood cemetery.
She was predeceased by her husband, Foster Womack Bryant, her daughter, Jo Lee Moss, and her granddaughter, Elizabeth Jo Moss. She is survived by her brother Robert Shipley of Valle Crucis, NC., and her son, Michael Bryant of Dry Fork, VA.
Also surviving are her four grandchildren, Ruth Michele West, Kim Soo Moss, Michael Dunabry, and Christopher Bryant, and one great-grandchild, Mary Elizabeth West.
Maynard Doc Chaney
Maynard Buford Doc Chaney, 73, of Bassett, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 at the Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center.
Born Sept. 30, 1928 in Patrick County, he was a son of the late Johnnie P. Chaney and the late Lydia James Chaney.
He was married
to Clemmie C. Chaney of Stuart, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Keith Chaney of Bassett; two daugthers, Maxine Chaney of Bassett and Teresa Chaney of Stuart; four sisters, Sylvia Reed of Fieldale, Mabel Watkins of Bassett, Hazel Johnson of Spartenburg, S.C. and Lovelene Boyd of Bassett; two brothers, Douglas Chaney of Danville and Hubert Chaney of Martinsville; two step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Bobby Chaney, Laine Chaney, Glen Chaney and Ronnie Chaney.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Bassett Funeral Service in Bassett with the Rev. Ron Peal officiating. Interment
will follow at the Union Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Patrick County Fairystone Park Area.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bassett Funeral Service and at other times at the home of his sister Mabel Watkins, 787 Melrose Ave. in Bassett.

Archie S. Corbin Sr.
ROANOKE, Va. - Archie S. Corbin Sr., 80, of Roanoke, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001.
He was married
to Eunice P. Corbin. He was retired from Liberty Mutual Life Insurance Company.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three children, Stephen Tyler Corbin of Richmond, Jillayne C. Graybill of Blue Ridge and the Rev. Dr. Archie S. Corbin Jr. of Portsmouth and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bonsack Baptist Church in Roanoke with the Rev. Dr. Robert G. Moore officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Oakeys East Chapel.

Billy Cox
DANVILLE, Va. - William Ottwa Billy Cox, 43, of 311 Girard St., died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and the last six days in the hospital.
Born Dec. 29, 1957, in Newport News, he was the son of June Lewis Cox, who survives, and James Richard Cox.
He lived most of his life in Danville, except for a short time in which he lived and worked in South Carolina prior to his retirement for health reasons. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Danville, include one son, William Carrington Cox of Altavista; his fiancee, Kathy Nelson of Danville; and two sisters, Aneka C. Wise of Newark, Del. and Kimberly C. Sadler of Danville.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Billy Hedrick and the Rev. Roy Newton officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Robert DeJournet
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert DeJournet, 82, of 115 St. Paul Circle, died Sunday Nov. 11, 2001 at Riverside Health Care.
Born August 19, 1919, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of the late John DeJournet and the late Gillie Bell Brandon DeJournet.
He was married
to Pastor Leola Massie DeJournet, who survives. He was employed with Fieldcrest Mills in Eden, N.C. for many years. He was formerly a member of Mt. Sinai Glorious Disciples of Christ Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Charlie Massie of Danville; five sisters, Clara Mae Dyer of Washington, Lorene Hairston and Anita Wilson, both of Reidsville, N.C., Ruth Ann Hairston of Eden, N.C. and Mabel Lockaway of Washington.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three siblings, Willie DeJournet, George DeJournet and Matt McCatney.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Disciples of Christ Church in Danville.

Bertha Goble
DANVILLE, Va. - Bertha Ewing Goble, 85, of 40 Oak Ridge Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health and 23 days in the hospital.
Born Nov. 10, 1916, in Washington County, she was a daughter of Kim D. Ewing and Scott Stout Ewing.
She was married
to Eugene Goble, who predeceased her in 1972. She lived in Danville since 1948, where she worked for 30 years at Dan River Inc. prior to her retirement on disability. She was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Minter of Axton and Carolyn G. Tompkins of Danville; four sisters, Nina Payne, Frances Williamson, Brenda K. Robertson and Sylvia R. Mann, all of Danville; one brother, Stewart Ewing of Danville; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by three sons, one sister and one brother.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Full Gospel Fellowship Church with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Lucye Echols Henry, age 93, passed away on November 10, 2001. She was a resident of Twin Oaks Convalescent Home, South Boston, VA.
She was born November 27, 1907 to the late Meads M. Echols and Mattie. She was a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Peytonsburg, VA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey W. Henry Sr., and daughter, Bettye H. Cooper. Surviving are two sons, Aubrey Henry Jr. and wife, Mamie, of Gretna; Dale Henry and wife, Jenny, of South Boston; and daughter, Carroll H. Hall and husband, Jack, of Roanoke; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, November 13, at 1 p.m. at Highland Burial Park, Danville By The Rev. John S. Ruef. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Frances Jefferson
DANVILLE, Va. - Frances Sue Jefferson, 71, of 433 Gay St., died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 19, 1930, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Ernest Ervin and Sarah Evans Ervin.
She worked for many years at Dan River Mills prior to her retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Pam Howerton of Danville, Bernadeen Matthews of Fayetteville, N.C.; three sons, Olando Williams Jr. of Pittsburgh, John Mason Jr. of Kembridge, Houston Jefferson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one brother, Forrest Ervin of Greensboro, N.C.; and a number of grandchildren.

MAX MEADOWS, Va. -Munsey Robert Jones, 80, of Pres Jackson Road, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Birdmont Health Care Center in Wytheville.
Born in Wythe County, he was the son of Frank P. Jones and Mollie Dunford Jones.
He was married
to Audrey Smith Jones, who survives. He was a former employee of the Virginia State Police and Fowlkes Machine Company. He was a member of Iva Lodge #173, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Flossie Andrews of Greensboro, N.C.; one son, Munsey Robert Jones Jr. of Danville; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two brothers, Luther Jones and Hershal Jones, both of Wytheville.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three sisters, Hlen, Betty and Marie and two brothers, Eugene and Fletcher.

Born March 19, 1920, he was the son of Walter King and Lena Gunter King.

to Jessi King, who survives. He was employed with the City of Danville Water, Gas and Electric Department prior to his retirement.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Lillie Venable of Danville; one son, Jim C. King of Danville and two sisters, Anna Davis of Danville and Gracie King of New York City.

Arhmed Long Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Arhmed Hilton Long Jr., 49, of 252 Hairston St., died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at the VA Hospital in Salem.
Born May 17, 1952, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Arhmed Long Sr. and Nellie Mae Jamerson Long. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was employed with Goodwill Industries in Chatham.
Survivors include one sister, Lena Mae McNair of Danville; six brothers, Aubrey Long of Callands, Raymond Long and Wallace Vaden, both of Blairs, Curtis Long of Chatham, Lewis Long of California and Robert Long of Fairfax.

will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Post 1097.
