Alvin Lowery
ELBERON, Va. - Alvin Franklin Lowery, 67, of 7287 White Marsh Road, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Smithfield Nursing Home.
Born May 14, 1934, in Halifax County, he was a son of Herbert Green Lowery and Melissa Conner Lowery. He was self-employed as a constructor and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda L. Jones of Newport News and Nancy L. Wooten of Elberon; three sons, David F. Lowery of Cortland, Ohio, Ricky A. Lowery of Surry and Herbie Lowery of South Boston; three sisters, Hazel L. Conner of Bay City, Texas, Sandra L. Blanks of Roxboro, N.C. and Kathy L. McDowell of South Boston; two brothers, Danny M. Lowery of Roxboro, N.C. and Wallace S. Lowery of Smithfield; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two sisters, Virginia L. Jones and Brenda L. Gravitt.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home. Interment
will follow at Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery.
The visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home.

Henrietta Mitchell
DANVILLE, Va. - Henrietta Sherman Mitchell, 93, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at her residence, 130 Grove Park Circle.
She was born Henrietta Schoolcraft Sherman on May 14, 1908, the daughter of Thomas Sherman and Elizabeth Cooper Sherman. Her paternal grandfather was James Schoolcraft Sherman, Vice President of the United States during the Howard Taft Administration, 1908-1912.
Mrs. Mitchell was a direct descendant of Princess Pocahontas through the Eldridge family of Virginia. She was also a distant cousin of Diana, Princess of Wales and H.M. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother through the Washingtons of Sulgrave Manor, England.
She was a descendant of John Howland, who came to America on the Mayflower and was a member of the John Howland Society.
For many years Mrs. Mitchell was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and was also eligible for membership in the Daughters of the Confederacy.
As a child, she attended the Utica County Day School, and was a graduate of Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield, Mass.
In 1929, she married
Charles Mitchell Hovey, who predeceased her in 1957. They had four children, three of these children predeceased her; Will Whiting Hovey II, Mary Elizabeth Hovey and Ann Hovey Kuyk. Charles Mitchell Hovey of Linwood, New Jersey survives her. She also leaves one granddaughter, five grandsons, nine great-granchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In 1959 she married
Alexander Shaw Mitchell Jr, who survives her.
Mrs. Mitchell was an ardent Episcopalian and held many offices in the church. She was also active in the Junior League of Utica and Scarsdale, New York. A tireless worker for worthy charities. She devoted her life to helping others.
A keen athlete, Mrs. Mitchell was a leader in establishing a woman’s curling in New York state. She loved playing golf and was a supporter of all sports as she felt they built character.
The memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Church of the Epiphany by the Rev. James Mathieson. Interment
will be at a later date at the family plot in Shelter Island, New York.

Omie Poteat
DANVILLE, Va. - Omie Carroll Poteat, 89, formerly of 273 Jamerson Road South, died suddenly Nov. 10, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after six weeks at Piney Forest Health Care.
Born Jan. 25, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Rueben Henderson Carroll and Martha Ann Patterson Carroll.
She was married
to William Harvey Poteat, who predeceased her May 2, 1983. She lived most of her life in Caswell County, N.C., where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Community Baptist Church in Purley, N.C., where she taught Sunday school for a number of years.
Survivors include one daughter, Annie Poteat Slaughter of Danville; one brother, Mac Carroll of Providence, N.C.; one sister, Bernice C. Goodson of Danville and four step-grandchildren.
The funeral arrangements are incomplete.
The family will be at the residence of Posey and Annie Slaughter, 273 Swanson Ave., off of Franklin Turnpike.

Sesila Smith
RUSTBURG, Va. - Sesila D. Smith, 28, of 9670 Wards Road, died Saturday, Nov. 10,2001 in Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born Sept. 25, 1973 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of Henry and Joan Jackson Smith.
She was employed as area administrator for Symbol’s Technologies Inc. in Tyson’s Corner, and was a member of Elba Missionary Baptist Church in Gretna.
Survivors, in addition to her parents of Rustburg, include one sister, Ashleigh Smith of the residence; one brother, Michael Smith of the residence; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Jackson of Chatham; paternal grandparents Veola Smith of Gretna and the late Eugene Smith; and a goddaughter, Dominque King of Richmond.
The funeral will be at noon Wednesday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. B.I. Baize officiating. Interment
will follow at Altavista Memorial Park.

Roy Tate Sr.
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Roy Edward Tate Sr., 68, of 293 Ferguson Farm Drive, died suddenly Nov. 9, 2001, at the Danville Regional Medical Center Emergency Department.
Born June 23, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Sam Tate and Mamie Burgess Tate.
He was married
Nov. 17, 1951, to Elsie Stevens Tate, who survives. He lived in Hampton for 32 years before moving back to the Sutherlin community of Pittsylvania County. He retired in 1993 from Newport News Shipbuilders Yard where he was a supervisor of the Small Tool Department. He was a member of Arbor Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army durng the Korean Conflict.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Roy Edward Tate Jr. of the residence and two sisters, Myrtle T. Dawson of Ringgold and Louise T. Hupp of Sutherlin.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Arbor Baptist Church in Sutherlin with the Rev. Averette Witcher officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

PITTSVILLE, Va. - Teresa Ann Tuck, 38, of 4580 Pittsville Road, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 9, 1963, in Danville, she was the daughter of Harold R. Tuck and Audrey Pritchett Tuck, who survive of the residence.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Riceville and was a member of the choir.
She was predeceased by one brother, Harold Wayne Tuck.

DANVILLE, Va. - Kenneth Richard Waller, 58, of 149 Abington Place, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 3, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Thomas Waller and Pattie Fitzgerald.
He was a laborer for Dan River Mills Inc.
Survivors include five sisters, Shirley Stewart of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Leona Glass of Gretna, Katella Dodson and Pattie B. Waller, both of Baltimore, Md. and Margaret Robertson of Blairs.
The funeral will be held 12 noon Monday at New Sandy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Reed officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery with military rites.

DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence E. Walton, 78, of 146 Fairlawn Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 23, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Clarence and Luvenia Farmer Walton.
He was married
to Helen Walton, who predeceased him.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Smith of the residence and Jacqueline Mitchell of Mt. Juliet, Tenn and two sons, Harnell E. Walton and Lary L. Walton, both of Danville.

Jesse Herman Webb
COLLINSVILLE, Va. -Jesse Herman Webb, Jr., 63, of 1838 Daniels Creek Road, died Monday, Nov. 12 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Born July 11, 1938, in Carroll County, he was a son of the late Jesse Herman Webb and the late Hazel Webb Robertson.
He was married
to Lois G. Webb, who survives. He retired from B & B Trucking due to an illness. He was a member of Good Home Primitive Baptist Church in Axton,.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one sister, Jewel Marie Reeves of Spencer; three brothers, Fred Kenneth Webb and Joseph Leonard Webb, both of Danville, and Eldon Lee Webb of Collinsville; three daughters, Tammy Diane Webb Petersen, Vickie Webb Compton and Susan Webb Moxley, all of Collinsville; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Frank O’Neal Webb.

Vernon Barbour Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Vernon Paul Barbour Jr., 49, of 3465 Horseshoe Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several months of declining health and five days in the hospital.
Born June 2, 1952, in Danville, he was a son of Vernon Paul Barbour Sr., who survives, and Louise Ferrell Barbour.
He was married
July 17, 1976, to Gail Harris Barbour, who survives. He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County, where he graduated from Tunstall High School in 1970. He was employed by Norfolk Southern Railway, where he worked as a brakeman until a decline in health. He was later employed as a driver by L.B. Dodson Mail Services of Danville. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence and father of Axton, include two daughters, Kirin Barbour of Glen Allen and Lyndsay Barbour of the residence; one brother, Steve Barbour of Axton; and three sisters, Joyce B. Agee and Sandra B. Swinney, both of Axton, and Verna B. Herring of Martinsville.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Bill Motley officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
