Hallie McMann
DANVILLE, Va. - Hallie Williamson McMann of 485 Hawthorne Drive, Danville, died Friday morning, November 16, 2001 while in Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Reidsville, N.C. the daughter of Daniel Cornelius Williamson and Belle Frances Lyle Williamson.
She was married
to the late William Edward Jennings McMann.
Mrs. McMann was very passionate about her Church, her community and her friends. She began teaching Sunday School in First Presbyterian Church when her children were very young. Her service and leadership in the Church continued through her presidency of the Church Circle, The Westminster Sunday School Class and the Women of the Church. She was active in Cub Scouting serving as a den mother for many years. She taught speech therapy at the church affiliated Hughes Memorial Home.
One of Mrs. McMann’s great loves was her garden, and she won many blue ribbons for her arrangements. She was a member and former president of the Harry Wooding Garden Club.
She was a member of The Wednesday Club, the Danville Golf Club, an avid golfer, painter and bridge player. She will be missed and cherished forever by her family.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Williamson McMann Daane of Nashville, TN, one son, William Edward Jennings McMann, Jr. of Danville, one brother, Loyd C. Williamson of Danville, four grandchildren; Elizabeth Whitney Daane of Nashville, TN., Olivia Quartel Daane of Aspen, CO., William Edward Jennings McMann, III of Danville and Walter Kenneth McMann of Danville, one great-grandchild, Ri-Lin Daane Black of Aspen, CO.
The Family will receive friends at the home, 485 Hawthorne Drive on Sunday, November 18, 2001 at 4:00 pm. A private memorial will be held at a later date.

Henrietta Mitchell
DANVILLE, Va. - Henrietta Sherman Mitchell, 83, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at her residence, 130 Grove Park Circle.
She was born Henrietta Schoolcraft Sherman on May 14, 1908, the daughter of Thomas Sherman and Elizabeth Cooper Sherman. Her paternal grandfather was James Schoolcraft Sherman, Vice President of the United States during the Howard Taft Administration, 1908-1912.
Mrs. Mitchell was a direct descendant of Princess Pocahontas through the Eldridge family of Virginia. She was also a distant cousin of Diana, Princess of Wales and H.M. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother through the Washingtons of Sulgrave Manor, England.
She was a descendant of John Howland, who came to America on the Mayflower and was a member of the John Howland Society.
For many years Mrs. Mitchell was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and was also eligible for membership in the Daughters of the Confederacy.
As a child, she attended the Utica County Day School, and was a graduate of Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield, Mass.
In 1929, she married
Charles Mitchell Hovey, who predeceased her in 1957. They had four children, three of these children predeceased her; Will Whiting Hovey II, Mary Elizabeth Hovey and Ann Hovey Kuyk. Charles Mitchell Hovey of Linwood, New Jersey survives her. She also leaves one granddaughter, five grandsons, nine great-granchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In 1959 she married
Alexander Shaw Mitchell Jr, who survives her.
Mrs. Mitchell was an ardent Episcopalian and held many offices in the church. She was also active in the Junior League of Utica and Scarsdale, New York. A tireless worker for worthy charities. She devoted her life to helping others.
A keen athlete, Mrs. Mitchell was a leader in establishing a woman’s curling in New York State. She loved playing golf and was a supporter of all sports as she felt they built character.
There will be a memorial service at the Church of the Epiphany at a future date. Internment will also be at a later date at the family plot in Shelton Islands, New York.
The family requests memorials be made to the Skinner Organ Fund of the Church of the Epiphany or Commonwealth Home Nursing and Hospice.
Ruby Moore
RINGGOLD, Va. - Ruby Landrum “Granny” Moore, of Ringgold, VA died November 15, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for several years.
Mrs. Moore was born May 23, 1908 in Keeling, Virginia a daughter of Leslie Paul Landrum and Lillian Walters Landrum. On January 7, 1927 she was married
to Jack Harry Moore, who died May 28, 1987. She had lived most of her life in the Ringgold community and was a member of the Ringgold Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Lois M. Major and Eugene Major, and Maggaline M. Dixon and Gary Dixon, Sr.; four grandchildren, Jackie S. Cleveland, H. Wesley Scearce, Kimberly M. Jackson and Gary Dixon, Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan Hardison, Joshua Hardison and Kristina Jackson and a sister, Daphney Irene Parris.
She was predeceased in addition to her parents and husband, by two sisters, Margaret L. Tardy and Elizabeth L. Roberts and three brothers, Vance Walters, Willie Landrum and Hugh Landrum.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 18, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Reverend Carl E. Burger. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Lois Major, 454 Northmont Blvd.
Exie Shotwell
RICHMOND, Va. - Exie Link Shotwell, 89, of 1111 Northbury Ave., died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals.
Born Jan. 22, 1912, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of William Fielding Link and Sarah Reaves Link.
She was married
to John Andrew Shotwell, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and a member of Alton Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Sara Ellen Tolley of Richmond; one sister, Shirley Buckner of South Boston; one brother, Lonnie Link of Alton; and two grandsons.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Alton Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Webb officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery on Harmony Road.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home.

Johnnie Thompson
RICHMOND, Va. - Johnnie C. Thompson, 76, of Richmond, formerly of Danville, passed away November 12, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mildred E. Thompson, daughters, Linda T. Cox, Susan T. Cordle, and her husband Sterling; his twin brother, James Thompson of Danville, and brothers, William Thompson of Catlett, Va., and Samuel Thompson of Danville, sisters, Sallie Adkins of Reidsville, N.C., Ada Bennett of Ringold Va., Viginia Walker of Ruffin, N.C., grandsons, Trey and Jonathan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Thompson was a World War II Army veteran. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham CHapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Dale Memorial Park in Chesterfield County.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad or Hospice of Central Virginia.
Rosa White
DANVILLE, Va. - Rosa M. White, 93, formerly of Java, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001 in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born September 30, 1908 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Elizabeth White.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie Minter and Edward White, both of Danville; three daughters, Edna Stone and Pollie Ann Barley, both of Java and Patsy Hunt of Newark, N.J.; two brothers, Marion White of Chatham and Willie White of Glasboro N.J.; one sister, Isabelle Robertson of Chatham; 35 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home in Chatham, with the Rev. Kevin M. McNeill officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park in Danville.
The family will be at the residence of her granddaughter, Gloria Jean White of Java.

Bernice Williamson
DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice Daniel Williamson, 82, of 347 Pat Williamson Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center, following a period of declining health.
Born May 22, 1919, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of the late Oscar and Laura Bradsher Daniel.
She was educated in Caswell County schools. She was a homemaker and a member of Griers Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra W. Griffen of Reidsville, N.C. and Brenda W. Crews of Blanch, N.C.; two sons, Harold Williamson of Yanceyville, N.C. and Darrell Williamson of Danville; two sisters, Vela Harrelson of Reidsville, N.C. and Myree Guill of Roxboro, N.C.; one brother, Frank Daniel of Pelham, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by her husband, Joseph “Pat” Williamson on Jan. 19, 2000.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Griers Presbyterian Church in Leesburg, N.C. with the Rev. Richard Ladew officiating.
The family will recieve friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Harrelson Funeral Home in Yanceyville, N.C., and other times at the residence.

James Wilson
DANVILLE, Va. - James Vester Wilson, 91, of 144 Callahan Hill Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 3, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Wilson and Annie Marie Keen Wilson.
He was married
to Mary Wilson, who predeceased him. He was employed by Solite Corporation for many years prior to his retirement.
Survivors include three daughters, Annie L. Mosby of Vallejo, Calif., Stella Fitzgerald of Danville and Dorothy Powell of Las Vegas; eight sons, Frank Wilson, Roy Wilson, Kevin Wilson and Marvin Wilson, all of Danville, Robert Wilson of Dry Fork, Anthony Wilson of Darlington, Md., Melvin Wilson of Virginia Beach and Troy Wilson of Atlanta; one sister, Lucille Smith of Richmond; one brother, O.W. Wilson of Danville; and a number of grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor George Reynolds officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Thomas Daniel
DRY FORK, Va. - Thomas Richard Daniel, 77, of 5608 Dry Fork Road, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at the residence after 15 months of declining health.
Born Nov. 29, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charlie Harvey Daniel and Lizzie Goard Daniel.
He lived his life in Dry Fork and was engaged in farming. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include three sisters, Wilma Wells of Danville and Irma Goard and Edith Daniel, both of Dry Fork, and three brothers, Clarence Daniel of Chapel Hill, N.C., Willard “Dave” Daniel of Dry Fork and Harvey Daniel of Danville.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one sister, Eva Daniel, and one brother, Charles Daniel.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Harry Meadows and the Rev. Rudy Robinson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Dave Daniel, 5904 Dry Fork Road.

Brenda DeBoe
DANVILLE, Va. - Brenda Anne DeBoe, 53, of 138 Northwest Blvd., died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 15, 1948, in Danville, she was a daughter of Dewey B. DeBoe and Annie Wilson DeBoe.
She lived all of her life in Danville, where she attended George Washington High School. She worked at Dan River Inc. at Hylton Hall in the home-fashions department for 28 years. She was an active member of Keen Street Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school; served on the nominating and directory committees; was a choir member, chairwoman of the music committee, director of children’s church, a church-news reporter and a former chairwoman of the children’s committee; and was active in the church’s vacation bible school.
Survivors include one sister, Joy DeBoe-DeBord of Ringgold.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Brown officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
