Nellie Farson

DANVILLE, Va. - Nellie Gibson Farson, 87, of 510 Bermuda Road, Danville, VA, died Saturday, November 17, 2001 at Stratford Health Care Center after several months of declining health.
Born September 19, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Coley Green Gibson and the late Lena McDowell Gibson.
She was first married to Marshall W. Norton, who died 7-5-57, and later to James T. Farson, who died 1-03-98.
Mrs. Farson lived her life in the Pittsylvania County and Danville area, where prior to her retirement she was employed with the Pittsylvania County School System as a bus driver. Prior to driving the bus she was employed with Dan River Inc. in the Schoolfield Division in the sewing room for 29 years and she also owned and operated the former Farson’s Green House for over 10 years. She was a member of The Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church for over 50 years where for several years she took care of the childrens nursery and was a member of the Church Senior Citizens Club.
Survivors include 1 Daughter: Gayle Norton Samuelson of Conyers, GA; 3 Brothers: William Gibson of Danville, VA, Edward Gibson of Ringgold, VA and Otis Gibson of Ringgold, VA; 7 Grandchildren: Lisa H. Pyron, Marc Hardison, Raymond Hardison, Keith Samuelson, Frank Samuelson, Marshall Samuelson and Joel Samuelson and 10 Great-Grandchildren.
She was predeceased by 1 Daughter: Jean Norton Hardison; 1 Grandson: John Hardison; 4 Brothers: Bernard Gibson, Thomas Gibson, Coley Gibson Jr. and Bobby Gibson and 3 Sisters: Marjorie Jones, Mamie Gibson and Helen Bass.
The Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at 2:00 PM at Highland Burial Park with The Reverend Carl Burger officiating.
The family will receive friends at 520 Bermuda Road, residence of granddaughter Lisa H. Pyron.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 1314 Spring St., Atlanta, Ga. 30329.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Hester Hall

DANVILLE, Va. - Hester Roberts Tate Hall, 93, formerly of 415 Third Ave., died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 26, 1908, in Sutherlin, she was a daughter of John Roberts and Bessie Moorefield Roberts.
She was first married to Willie R. Tate, who predeceased her in 1955, and she later married Oscar L. Hall, who predeceased her Feb. 6, 1980. She worked at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home as a pastry cook before her retirement. She was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church, where she was a former member of the choir.
Survivors include two sons, Clyde William Tate of Moltrie, Ga. and Carroll Tate of Alton; one sister, Victoria Myers of Gretna; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husbands and parents, by one son, William R. Tate Jr.; four sisters, Eva Guill, Lizzie Tate, Lula R. Slayton Robertson and Myrtle R. Moore; and three brothers, Preston Roberts, Lloyd Roberts and Aubrey Roberts.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her granddaughter, Cynthia Motley, 624 Oakland Drive in Chatham.
Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kittie Jennings

NATHALIE, Va. - Kittie Starkey Jennings, 94, of 1019 Tower Lane, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.
Born Dec. 12, 1906, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of William Thomas Starkey and Ann Lee Harvey Starkey.
She was married to Steven Ross Jennings, who predeceased her. She was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Kitty Jennings Thomas of Richmond; two sons, Steven Ross Jennings Jr. of Moore Haven, Fla. and Bob B. Jennings of the residence; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jerry Jordan officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Josephine Sadler

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Josephine Conner Womack Sadler, 92, of 416 Valley Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in Meadowview Terrace in Clarksville.
Born Sept. 17, 1909, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Mount Conner and Zora Womack Conner.
She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, William Womack of Hopewell and Charlie Womack of Lincoln, Ore.; two daughters, Betty Redd and Liz Williams, both of South Boston; one sister, Lucy Wells of Clover; one brother, Frank Conner of Roxboro, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by three sons, Howard Womack, Joe Womack and Harry Womack; three infant children; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tony Brooks officiating. Interment icon will follow at Bethel Baptist Church in Scottsburg.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Brooks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Schwarz II

DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Paul Schwarz II, 74, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 1, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Charles Paul Schwarz Sr. and Daisy Sperry Schwarz.
He was first married to Jane Purcell Schwarz, who predeceased him in December 1967, and he later married Lorraine Schwarz, who predeceased him in 1991. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a retired coffee broker and agent, having worked in New York City. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include one son, Charles P. Schwarz III of Danville; one daughter, Laurinda Goodyear of Top Sail Beach, N.C.; one sister, Anne S. Shaw of Gainesville, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral Mass will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father David V. McGuire officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church and other times at the residence of his son, 330 Southland Drive in Danville.

Vanna Terry

DANVILLE, Va. - Vanna Elizabeth Terry, 65, of 142 N. Woodberry Ave., died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five days in the hospital.
Born July 15, 1936, in Danville, she was a daughter of Marvelyn Speeler Braswell and Frances Mills Braswell.
She lived her life in Danville, where she graduated from George Washington High School in 1954. She worked in the city clerk’s office in Danville for a number of years before becoming a homemaker. She was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Stuart Lee Terry of Axton, and one sister, Frankie J. Braswell of Danville.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Shelby Royal officiating.
The family received friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence of her son, 76 Dickerson Drive in Axton.
The family suggests memorials be made to Veteran’s Honor Guard of Martinsville/Henry County, P.O. Box 1281, Martinsville, Va. 24114.

Clifton Arthur Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Clifton Vann Arthur Sr., 49, of 130 Mimosa St., died Nov. 21, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health and five days in the hospital.
Born Jan. 15, 1952, in Danville, he was the son of Yancey Vann Arthur, who survives and Alma Moore Arthur.
He lived his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area where he was a service representative for Dameron Fire Equipment Co. prior to a decline in health. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Clifton Vann Arthur Jr. of Danville; one daughter, Chasity B. Arthur of the residence; two brothers, Teddy B. Arthur of Sutherlin and Barry H. Arthur of Danville; three sisters, Tanya Arthur Harris and Debra Arthur Mitchell, both of Danville and Karen Arthur Stewart of Ringgold and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his mother, by one brother, Franklin D. Arthur and one granddaughter.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating.
The family will be at the residence of his father, 3601 Country Side Drive.

Yvonne Bannister

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -Yvonne L. Bannister, 58, of Davis Drive, Cartersville, Ga., died Tuesday, November 20, 2001.
Mrs. Bannister was born November 8, 1943, in Danville, Virginia, a daughter of the late Kelly Lankford and Hazel Mann Lankford.
She was a member of the Calhoun Church of Christ and prior to illness was employed by the Cartersville School System.
Survivors include her husband, Jack H. Bannister, her children, Kelly and Ken Harrison, of Charlotte, North Carolina, Stephanie and James Thornton, of Transylvania, Louisiana, Bobby and Debbie Bannister and Jack and Kathy Bannister, all of Cartersville, 10 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; one sister, Annette Lankford, of Falls Church, Virginia; two brothers, Bruce Lankford, of Roanoke, Virginia and Guy Lankford, of Danville Virginia, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 24, 2001, from the Chapel of the Owen Funeral Home, with Frank Mills officiating.
Interment services will be held Monday, November 26, 2001, from the Highland Burial Park, in Danville, Virginia.
The family will receive friends at Owen Funeral Home from 7:00 till 9:00 p.m. Friday.
Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Drive, Cartersville, is in charge of the arrangements.
A Graveside service will be conducted Monday, November 26th at 11:00 a.m. in Highland Burial Park by the Reverend John Hill. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Claude Barber

DANVILLE, Va. - Claude Turner Barber, age 77, of 702 Franklin Trnpk., died Monday morning November 19, 2001 at the residence of his daughter at Axton after six weeks of declining health. He had been in serious condition for the past two weeks.
Mr. Barber was born in Rockingham County, North Carolina on February 17, 1924, a son of the late Turner Barber and Ida Scott Barber.
He married Mamie Jennings Barber on November 22, 1944 who predeceased him on August 13, 2001.
Mr. Barber had made his home at 702 Franklin Trnpk., for 35 years. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church and was a transportation supervisor for the City of Danville before retiring at the age of 64.
Survivors include one daughter and son in law: Brenda Barber Bestler and Dr. J. Michael Bestler of Axton, and two sisters: Naomi Pritchett of Danville, and Mattie Lou Sheffield of Greenville, South Carolina, and one brother: Calvin Barber of Dry Fork.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements where the family received friends on Tuesday from 5:00 - 6:30 P.M., and at other times at the residence of his daughter and son in law at 650 Axton Road, Axton.
The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Memorial Hospital, 320 Hospital Drive Martinsville, VA 24112.

Martin Daniel Sr.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Martin Franklin Daniel Sr., of 5015 Bill Tuck Highway, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Halifax County, he was a son of Joseph A. Daniel.
He was married to Thelma Perkins Daniel, who survives. He was a member of Mt. Cana United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of South Boston, include one son, Martin F. Daniel Jr. of Durham, N.C. and one brother, Dorsey L. Daniel of South Boston.
He was predeceased by one brother, Harry Daniel, and two sisters, Ruby Arrington and Eva Daniel.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Holmes officiating. Interment icon will follow at Mt. Cana United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
