E. Thompson Eldridge, 72, former Marine boxer
E. Thompson ``Tommy'' Eldridge of Triangle died Monday at Woodbridge Nursing Center of kidney failure. He was 72.
Mr. Thompson was a resident of Triangle and Quantico since 1948.
While representing the Marine Corps, he was the only Marine to ever be victorious in all his boxing matches with other branches of the armed forces. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Triangle Assembly of God church, Dale City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1503, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Fredericksburg, a lifetime member of American Legion Post 28, Dale City Moose Lodge 2165, and the Boxing Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Jean and Buster Thompson; and a sister, Ovita Horton.
Mr. Thompson is survived by two daughters, Teresa Monk of Stafford and Rhonda Clyborne of Severn, Md.; a son, John Wayne Thompson of Mount Ranier, Md.; a sister, Edith Thompson Bartram of Alabaster, Ala.; a brother, John Thompson of Texas; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd. in Dale City, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Cliff Burroughs officiating. Interment
with military honors will follow at Quantico National cemetery.
James Walter O'Brien, 75, Navy veteran
James Walter O'Brien of Manassas died of cancer Tuesday at Prince William Hospital. He was 75.
Mr. O'Brien was born Feb. 25, 1926, in Alexandria. He was the son of the late Henry Michael and Gladys Virginia Langley O'Brien.
He was a Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He had retired from GSA as an electrician.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marion S. O'Brien; three sons and their wives, Michael (and Noel) O'Brien and Rick (and Nancy) O'Brien, all of Manassas, and John (and Lisa) O'Brien of Fort Knox, Ky.; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St. in Manassas, with the Rev. Carolyn Richar officiating. Visitation will follow until 9 p.m.
Interment at Arlington National cemetery will be private.

Sarah M. Jones, 92, officers club member
Sarah Mabel Jones of Manassas died of heart failure Saturday at her residence at Golden Years Assisted Living. She was 92.
Mrs. Jones was a resident of the area for more than 50 years. She was member of the Andrews Officers Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Jones; two sons, Virgil D. Jones and Stephen Hamilton Jones; and one brother, Stanley Hamilton.
She is survived by three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, with the Rev. Douglas Duty officiating. Interment
services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Arlington National cemetery.
Viola M. Gay, 78, Manassas resident
Viola M. Gay of Manassas died of respiratory failure April 12 at Prince William Hospital. She was 78.
She was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Washington, D.C.
She is survived by three children, John Booher of Manassas, Rodney Gay of Gainesville and Kathy Lewis of Fairfax; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Manassas Presbyterian Church, 8201 Ashton Ave., Manassas, with the Rev. Carla Gorrell officiating.

Michael A. Shannon, 61, retired Army colonel
Michael Alfred Shannon of Lake Ridge died Wednesday of cancer at his residence. He was 61.
Col. Shannon was a resident of Prince William County for more than 15 years. He retired from the U.S. Army after 26 years in the U.S. Medical Service Corps. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. He was awarded the Legion of Merit with an oak-leaf cluster for his service at the Gander Air Crash in Newfoundland. He also was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with four service stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He is survived by his twin sister, Christina Hasenfus of Bath, Maine; his brothers, Stanley E. Shannon Jr. of Woodbridge and Ralph J. Shannon of Calais, Maine; and two nieces and two nephews.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road, Woodbridge, with a wake service to be held at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10.30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 12805 Valleywood Drive, Lake Ridge, with the Rev. James Barkett officiating. Interment
with military honors will follow at Quantico National cemetery.

Doris R. Smoot, 83, of Brandywine
Doris Ripple Smoot, 83, died Sept. 15, 2000, after an auto accident.
She was born Sept. 24, 1916, in Cheltenham. She was a bookkeeper for Franklin Wholesale Company, a member of St. John's the Evangelist Church and a member of the High Hat Club.
She worked for the Board of Elections after retirement and for the Red Cross during World War II.
She is survived by two sons, Walter D. and John F. Bixler; two granddaughters, Debra McManus and Tracey; four grandsons, Daniel, Adam Bixler, Ryan and Bradley; two great-grandchildren, Eric Hartman and Mason McNamus; a brother, Robert Ripple; and a host of other family members.
The viewing will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Lee Funeral Home, 6633 Old Alexandria Ferry Road in Clinton. Service will be at 12:30 p.m. at St. John's Evangelist Church.
Burial will be at Resurrection cemetery, Clinton.

Grace M. Gardiner, 82, died Sept. 18, 2000, at Bradford Oaks Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 2, 1918, in Maryland. She was a retired secretary and a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Vicky Wheatley, Phyllis White, Mary and Marilyn Zehring; a brother, Chuck Hancock; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph B. ``Bert."
The viewing will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Lee Funeral Home, 6633 Old Alexandria Ferry Road in Clinton. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Upper Marlboro.
Burial will be at Resurrection cemetery, Clinton.
Perry Mae Lilly
Perry Mae Lilly, 85, died Sept. 17, 2000, at Mariner Health Care, Silver Spring.
She was born Jan 21, 1915, in Lancaster County, S.C. She was a self-employed seamstress.
She also went to college for two years.
She is survived by a son, Isom Young Jr.; a brother, Franklin Pierce Barnes; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Elbert.
Service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Borgwardt Funeral Home, 4400 Powder Mill Road in Beltsville.
Burial will be at Maryland National Memorial Park, Laurel.
