Charles Arrington Jr.
Charles Wayne Arrington Jr., infant son of Charles Wayne Arrington and Katherine Perdue, died Friday at Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Glenwood and Alice Arrington.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Don and Irma Purdue of Manassas; nine aunts and 10 uncles.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Lee Funeral Home, 8521 Sudley Road in Manassas. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lee Funeral Home, 8521 Sudley Road in Manassas, with the Rev. Aubrey Sanders officiating. Interment icon will follow at Stafford Memorial Park in Stafford.

William Hawkins
William Bryant Hawkins of Manassas died Saturday at Annaburg Manor in Manassas. He was 78.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elizabeth Hawkins, and one son, William C. Hawkins.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Hawkins; two sons: Rodney Hawkins of Manassas and James Hawkins of Richmond; one sister, Vivian Davis of Manassas; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blasius-Baker Funeral Home, 9320 West St. in Manassas. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas.

Sybil Woodard
Sybil Evelyn Covington Woodard of Westminister at Lake Ridge died Saturday at Potomac Hospital.

She was a member of Saint Paul United Methodist church, the Bethany Sunday School and Agape Fellowship of United Methodist Woman, the Woodbridge Woman's Club, the Rocky Run Garden Club and Historic Dumfries/Virginia Inc. She also was a charter member, first president and founder of the Trowel Garden Club of Triangle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wilber Woodard Sr.; two brothers: Roscoe Covington and Arthur Eugene Covington Jr. and a grandson.

She is survived by five children: Gail Woodard Sztanko, Michael Woodard, Lynda Woodard Raguz, Stephen Woodard; two stepchildren: John Woodard Jr. and Carolyn Woodard Bibault; one brother, William Sidney Covington; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd. in Dale City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Paul United Methodist Church, 1400 G St. in Woodbridge. Interment icon will be held at Dumfries cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alexander Eugene Sztanko Memorial Scholarship Fund at Saint Paul United Methodist Church, 1400 G St., Woodbridge, VA 22191.

Marjorie R. Huntington, 76,
former Electoral Board president

Marjorie Rutter Huntington of Woodbridge died Saturday of emphysema at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Anne Arundel, Md.

Mrs. Huntington was born in Wilmington, Del., and moved to Woodbridge in 1957. She was a member of the Woodbridge Women's Club and a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She served as chairwoman and secretary of the Prince William County Electoral Board. She was former president of the PTA at Fred M. Lynn Middle School, the Prince William Republican Women's Club and the Potomac Hospital Auxiliary and was a community reporter for the Journal Messenger.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Huntington.

She is survived by two daughters, Lynn Cloutier of Morrisville, N.C., and Wendy Ruceda of Washington, D.C.; one son, Bill Huntington of Glen Burnie, Md.; a sister, Eleanor Aulen of Newark, Del.; and five grandchildren.

Visitation was held Tuesday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road, Woodbridge, where services will be held at 10 a.m. today with the Rev. Robert Woodworth officiating. Interment icon will follow at Quantico National cemetery.

Carl H. Cotterill, 83,
retired federal employee

Carl H. Cotterill, a metallurgical engineer with the Bureau of Mines in the U.S. Department of the Interior from 1971 until he retired in 1991, died of a heart attack Sunday in his home in McLean. He was 83.

Born Nov,. 27, 1918, in Lamar, Mo., Mr. Cotterill was the son of the late Minnie Ulrich and Samuel Hayden Cotterill. He received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering in 1940 at the University of Missouri at Rolla and an honorary degree in metallurgical engineering and a master's degree at Washington University in St. Louis.

During World War II, Mr. Cotterill served as a U.S. Army aircraft warning officer in North Africa, Italy and Germany, continuing to serve in the reserve and retired reserve after the war, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Mr. Cotterill began his career as a metallurgical engineer with American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. in Dumas, Texas, where he met and married Ollie Glee Mills on Dec. 25, 1941. He was an active, lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Sigma Xi and Alpha Chi Sigma. An avid golfer and student of history, he also held various positions, including editor, with The American Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Hauden Mills Cotterill of Northville, Mich., and Wray Q.C. Cotterill of Arnold, Md.; two daughters, Merrilea Ann Lamborne of Edgewater, Md., and Carla Jean LaFever of Leesburg; a sister, Mary Louise Vallier; and seven grandchildren.

Friends may call at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Ave. W., Vienna, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Charles Wesley United Methodist Church, 6817 Dean Drive, McLean. Interment icon will be in Waters cemetery, Jasper, Mo.

Robert Franklin, 51,
formerly of Arlington

Robert Franklin, formerly of Arlington and Washington, D.C., and a former employee in the Arlington County government's housing department, died of a heart attack May 18 at his home in Abingdon. He was 51.

Born in Harlan, Ky., Mr. Franklin was a graduate of Augusta Military Academy in Fort Defiance and attended the University of Maryland. He served with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam during the war in Southeast Asia. At the time of his death, he was employed in the engineering division of nTelos, an Internet service provider in Southwest Virginia.

He is survived by a daughter, Laura Elizabeth Franklin of Arlington, and her mother, Marjory Franklin, his former wife; his mother, Blanche Perkey Franklin of Abingdon; and a brother, John Franklin of Washington, D.C.

A memorial service for Mr. Franklin was held May 21 in Abingdon.

Beulah McLaughlin, 81,

ex-Arlington County librarian

Beulah McLaughlin died July 21 at her home in Seminole, Fla., of myasthenia gravis complicated by diabetes. She was 81.

She was an Arlington County resident for 40 years and worked for 25 years as a librarian for different county schools. She was a member of Mount Olivet Methodist Church, Mac's Class, the American Association of University Women, the Arlington County Teachers Union and past Bethel Guardian of Bethel 1 of Job's Daughters.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Kenneth; two daughters: Karen Metzger of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Linda Tyler of Treasure Island, Fla.; a granddaughter; and three grandsons.

The memorial service was held July 25 at Freedom Square Town Hall in Seminole, with the Rev. Cliff Melvin officiating.

Marie Schnell, 86, retired bookkeeper

Marie Ruesgen Johnson Schnell, 86, of Alexandria and formerly of La Crosse, Wis., died of heart and diabetic ailments last Friday at Alexandria Hospital.

Mrs. Schnell was born in Elgin, Ill., on Sept. 20, 1914, and had seven brothers and sisters, all of whom are deceased. She lived most of her life in La Crosse, where she graduated from Logan High School as class salutatorian in 1929, at the age of 15. She was employed for many years as a bookkeeper for two La Crosse companies.

Mrs. Schnell married Richard C. Johnson of La Crosse in 1934 and they had a son, Richard A. Johnson, of Alexandria, with whom she resided since August 1999. Also surviving are three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her first husband died in 1959. In 1963, she married Carl Schnell of La Crosse, who died in 1970.

She enjoyed sports, was a baseball fan and backer of the Green Bay Packers, and was an avid reader.

Funeral services will be held in La Crosse. Contributions may be made in Mrs. Schnell's name to any local chapter of the American Diabetes Association.
