Irene Petty Perkins
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Irene Petty Perkins, 78, of 430 Summit Drive, South Boston, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002 at The Woodview.
Born June 12, 1924, she was the daughter of William Able Petty and Rosa Smart Petty Davis.
She was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth Perkins of South Boston and two sisters, Lila Rumbaugh and Rosa Lee Davis, both of South Boston.
Funeral services are incomplete at this time.

Gene Satterfield
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Albert "Gene" Eugene Satterfield, 60, 769 Laurel Grove Road, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002 in Stratford Health Care Center after several years of declining health.
Born Sept. 21, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Atlas Eugene Satterfield and the late Ella Dodson Satterfield.
Mr. Satterfield had lived most of his life in the Laurel Grove community of Pittsylvania County. He had retired from the Corning Corp. in October of 1998 after 34 years of service.
He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church and he was a life member of the Laurel Grove Fire and Rescue Department where he had served as Assistant Chief and as Chief. He was selected as Fireman of the Year on numerous occasions and Fireman of the Decade for 1988-1998.
He married Sybil Elaine Jones Satterfield on June 18, 1965.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Albert (Al) Eugene Satterfield and his wife, Patti, of Sutherlin and James (Jamie) Harold Satterfield of Bel Air, Md.; one daughter, Tracy Ann S. Barksdale and her husband, Kenneth Wayne (Bubba) Barksdale, of Sutherlin; and two sisters, Lucille (Peggy) S. Clark of South Boston and Mary S. Eastwood of Sutherlin; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Monday at Laurel Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Owsley and Pastor Hylton Lawrence officiating. Interment will follow in the Laurel Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends 7-8:30 Sunday at the Laurel Grove Baptist Church. At other times they will be at the residence.

Ruth Edith Tucker
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Edith Tucker, 84, of 517 Van Buren St., died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 10, 1918 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Weldon Price and Hanna Taylor Price.
She was a retired employee of the City of Danville.
She was married to Junius Tucker, who predeceased her.
She is survived by five daughters; Adrian Schoefield and Carletta Laverne Watkins, both of Danville, Linda Barksdale of Chesapeake, Suefrann Stroud of Burlington, N.J. and Anne Renee Tucker of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Berdell Tucker and Christopher Tucker, both of Danville. A number of brothers also survive.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Melvin Tucker.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Herbert Dickerson officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Carl Young
DANVILLE, Va. - Carl David Young Sr., 66, of 180 Clement Avenue, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at his residence after a yearlong illness.
He was born Oct. 20, 1936, in Danville, a son of Herman Roosevelt Young and Catherine Moss Young. He had lived his early life in the Vandola community and his adult life in Danville. He was retired from Dan River Mills after 43 years of service. Mr. Young attended the Christian Heritage Church.
He was a veteran of the United States Army.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Laprade Young of the residence; a son, David Eanes of Danville; three sisters, Connie Y. McCormick of Ringgold, Maude Y. Coggin of Danville and Becky Y. Butts of Yanceyville, N.C.; a devoted sister-in-law, Louise Laprade of Danville; four grandchildren, Trenton David Eanes and James Arnold of Danville and Shawn Taylor and Denise Young of Eden, N.C.; four great-grandchildren; his special companions, two cocker spaniels, P.J. and Precious; and many devoted and loving friends.
He was predeceased by a son, Carl David Young Jr.; two sisters, Phoebe Ragsdale and Hasseltine Young and a brother, Bobby Ray Young.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at 2 p.m. from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Steven White. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and will at other times be at the residence.

Vernon Paul Barbour Sr.
AXTON, Va. - Vernon Paul Barbour Sr., 85, 155 Ferrell Lane, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Blue Ridge Nursing Home, Martinsville.
Born Nov. 25, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Millard Barbour and Gertrude Hines Barbour.
He lived most of his life in the Axton community. He was employed as a shipping clerk with Bassett Furniture Company where he retired after 30 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army.
He was married to Louise Ferrell Barbour who predeceased him on Nov. 29, 1994.
He is survived by three daughters, Joyce Agee, Sandra Swinney, both of Axton and Verna Herring of Martinsville; a son, Steve Barbour of Axton; four sisters, Callie Jones of Danville, Catherine Moore of Fieldale, Boyard Barbour and Elizabeth Williams, both of Danville; nine half brothers and sisters; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Paul Barbour; a brother, Edward Toler Barbour; and two sisters, Edith Barbour and Beatrice Meadows.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Chapel with interment in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Candace Bowman Battle
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Candace Bowman Battle, 36, of 3632 Hoss Street, formerly of Danville, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident.
Born July 16, 1967, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Wesley and Clara Bowman.
She was formerly married to William D. Battle of Fayetteville, who survives.
She was employed by Dan River, Inc. and Black and Decker Tool Company.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Tiffany Bowman; two sons, Anthony Bowman and Carlos Powell Jr., all of Fayetteville; two sisters, Kimberly Pettiford and Cynthia Gunn, both of Danville, Va.; and six brothers, Sterling of Ocala, Fla., Rand of New York, N.Y., Wesley of San Diego, Calif., Larry, Lewis, both of Danville, Va. and Jimmy of Roanoke, Va.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stacey Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Carrie Compton Brown
CENTREVILLE, Va. - Carrie Compton Brown, 86, of 14600 Jenn Court, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at Inova Fair Oakes Hospital in Fairfax, Va.
Born October 12, 1915, in Gretna, she was the daughter of George Compton and Annie Brumfield Compton.
Mrs. Brown lived most of her life in Danville where she was employed as bookkeeper for Stinson Tire Company. She had resided with her daughter since 1992, Centreville, Va. She was a charter member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church where she was a choir member and served on various committees.
She was married to John D. Brown Jr. who predeceased her October 7, 1991.
She is survived by a daughter, Lynda B. Dallas of Centreville, Va.; a sister, Lois Pendergrass of Lynchburg, Va., two grandchildren, Charles E. Dallas Jr. of Miami, Fla. and Sheri Ayoub of Leesburg, Va.; and one great-grandchild, Brianna Ayoub of Leesburg, Va.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel with The Rev. John Etcher officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

James Vincent 'Smiley' Conners
PITTSVILLE, Va. - James Vincent "Smiley" Conners, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 15, 1923, he was the son of Fuller Andrew Conners and Mary Lethia Sanford Conners.
He lived with Lydell and Kim Adkins since his health declined after retiring from the Pittsylvania County School System in 1987. Before his retirement with Pittsylvania County, he was a mechanic for American Airlines.
He is survived by a brother, Motley Conners of Brookneal; and three foster sisters, Clara B. Warren of Gretna, Louise B. Adkins of Gretna and Lucy Franklin of Martinsville.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ruby Owen Conners; foster parents, Lacy and Ora Cook Blair; two sisters, Irene C. Gordon and Jean Eskew; a brother, Emory Conners; and a foster sister, Margaret B. Thomas.
The graveside funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Liberty Memorial Cemetery with Neville Shelton officiating.

Norma Ruth Ratliff Martin
GROVER, N.C. - Norma Ruth Ratliff Martin, 79, of 114 Villa Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, in South Boston.
Born Oct. 1, 1923, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Glenn Ratliff and Selma Chandler Ratliff.
She was formerly from South Boston and was a homemaker.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary R. Childrey of South Boston, Va., Joyce Harrelson of Shelby and Barbara Diane Johnson of Grover; two sons, Glenn Martin of Walnut Cove and James R. "Jimmy" Martin of Grover; a brother, Glenn Ratliff of South Boston, Va.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Willie R. Martin; and a sister, Mary F. Hightower.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating.

Mia Shanice Lynette Saunders
CHATHAM, Va. - Mia Shanice Lynette Saunders, infant daughter of John Wayne and Bernetha Saunders, died Sunday afternoon at the residence.
She was born Oct. 6, 1999 in Danville, Va.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Ashley J. Saunders of the residence; grandparents, Dorothy and Joseph Wright of Tappahannock; and a great-grandmother, Katherine Saunders of Chatham.
She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Jimmie Wright Sr. and Cornelia Wright, a paternal grandfather, Wade Lee Stones and a paternal great-grandfather, Robert (Dole) Saunders.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony Ferebee officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Lena Jordan Wallace
DANVILLE, Va. - Lena Jordan Wallace, 84, of 156 Forestdale Drive, Apt. 312, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health and a week in the hospital.
Born April 14, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Glenn C. Jordan and Mamie Gilliland Jordan.
She lived her life in the Danville area where prior to her retirement, she was employed at Cranes Cleaners and was a member of the Hill Toppers. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was married to Clarence Hill, who predeceased her in 1950. She later married Linwood Lawrence Wallace, who also predeceased her on May 25, 1992.
She is survived by a daughter, Frances L. Engen of Roxboro, N.C.; a sister, Nancy Loftis of Danville; two step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by two brothers, Irvin and James Jordan.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Henry Taylor and Duane Allmond officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Thomas Britton White
DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas Britton White, 87, of 131 Rosedale Court, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at his residence.
Born Oct. 23, 1914, in Chatham, he was the son of William Edward White and Henrietta Rosabell Eanes White.
He was married to Virginia Mundy White, who predeceased him on March 24, 1998.
He had been a resident of Danville since 1946 and was retired from Motor Parts and Equipment. He was a World War II veteran and served in the 5th Airforce in the Pacific Theater. He was a charter member of Rivermont Baptist Church.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
The graveside funeral will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Waddell officiating. Full military honors will be given by American Legion Post No. 1097.
