Michael D. Speaks
LOUDOUN HEIGHTS, Va. - Michael Dale Speaks, 50, of Loudoun Heights, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Loudoun Hospital Center in Leesburg, Va.
Born May 28, 1949, in Loudoun Heights, he was the son of Raymond Howard and Bertha Mae Smith Speaks Sr.
He owned and operated Mike's Mart-Hardware at Bolivar, W.Va., and was an accountant for Hilltop House Hotel in Harpers Ferry, W.Va. He also was the correspondent for the Loudoun Times in Leesburg.
He was a member, former board member and youth minister of Loudoun Valley Church of the Nazarene.
He was a member of Neersville Fire and Rescue Co. He was a past president of Between the Hills Community Association.
He is survived by six sisters, Ethel Liversey of Leesburg, June Muller of Havre de Grace, Md., Geraldine Quigley of Ashburn, Va., Emma Regina Smith and Janet Maus, both of Alexandria, Va., and Betty Speaks of Herndon, Va.; and five brothers, Howard W. Speaks, Raymond H. Speaks Jr. and Rusty Speaks, all of Martinsburg, W.Va., Calvin Speaks of Lovettsville, Va., and Larry Speaks of Stephens City, Va.
He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Judith Gale Speaks.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Loudoun Valley Church of the Nazarene, 35834 Charles Town Pike in Purcellville, Va. The Rev. Athan Burch will officiate. Burial will be in Ebenezer cemetery in Loudoun Heights.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, 970 Washington St. in Harpers Ferry.

Elsie H. Thompson
LURAY, Va. - Elsie Hilliard Thompson, 91, of Hawksvill Rest Home, and formerly of 222 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Page Memorial Hospital in Luray.
Born Aug. 14, 1908, in Shenandoah, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jacob Burman and Della Jane Strole Hilliard.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest C. Thompson, in 1978.
She was employed by Eyerly's department store, retiring in 1976.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown.
She was a former member of Alexander House Senior Citizens; Potomac Towers Senior Citizens, Church Women of Washington County; and a member of AARP.
She is survived by a brother, Odis L. Hilliard of Shenandoah; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Avis Hilliard, James Hilliard, Churchill Hilliard and Alton Hilliard.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Patrick A. Pierce will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Gladys H. Kappel
STAFFORD, Va. - Gladys H. Kappel, 86, of Columbus Drive and formerly of Silver Hill, Md., Buck Valley, Pa., and Tucson, Ariz., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at her home.
Born Oct. 27, 1913, in Buck Valley, she was the daughter of the late William L. and Mary Elizabeth Brady Hendershot.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George I Kappel, whom she married
April 15, 1933.
She attended Center School in Buck Valley; and Warfordsburg (Pa.) High School.
She worked in Washington, D.C.
She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, taught Sunday school and was active in Relief Society.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara J. Andreasen of Stafford, with whom she lived; a son, G. William Kappel of Tucson; a brother, Ralph Hendershot of Warfordsburg; 10 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara and Mildred; and two brothers, Cromer Hendershot and Guy G. Hendershot.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hancock Ward in Hancock. Bishop Gerald Hendershot will officiate. Burial will be in Buck Valley Methodist Memorial cemetery in Warfordsburg.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St. in Hancock.
Catherine C. Sowers
HARRISONBURG, Va. - Catherine Clipp Sowers, 93, of 486 Ott St., died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000.
Born Aug. 27, 1906, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Helen Schamel Clipp.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy Frederick Sowers, in 1988. They were married
Feb. 1, 1930.
She attended Western Maryland William and Mary Extension College.
She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
She was a member of Colonial Garden Club.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. William F. Sowers of Staunton, Va., and John A. Sowers and James S. Sowers, both of Harrisonburg; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The Revs. John Glover and William Mengebier will officiate. Burial will follow in Woodbine cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at her home, 486 Ott St..

Mary H. Peyton
SPRINGFIELD, Va. - Mary H. "Holly" Peyton, 46, of 7387 Shady Palm Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Va.
Born July 25, 1953, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Amos Hollis Anderson of Hagerstown and the late Mary Virginia Gale Anderson.
She was a 1971 graduate of South Hagerstown High School and a 1975 graduate of James Madison University with a bachelors degree.
She was an interior designer with Dupont in Sterling, Va.
She was a member of Sydenstryker United Methodist Church, Springfield.
She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority; secretary of the Choral Patrons Association of West Springfield High School; treasurer of Madrigal Singers; National Association of Interior Designers; President of Northern Virginia Floor Covering Association; a member of Queen Esther Chapter 3 Order of the Eastern Star; the Past Honor Queen of Bethel 26 International Order of Jobs Daughters, both of Hagerstown.
In addition to her father, she is survived by her stepmother, Crena L. Anderson; her husband, George D. Peyton II; a daughter, Nicole D. Peyton at home; two sons, George D. Peyton Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., and Tyler R. Peyton at home; a sister, Gale A. Terenzino of Pittsburgh; a niece; a nephew and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard W. Simpson will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Sally Kline
CHESTER, Va. - Sally Kline, 56, of 5508 W. Hundred Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at her home.
Born in Newport News, Va., she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Flurie of Pennsylvania.
She was a 1960 graduate of South Hagerstown High School.
She was the manager of a restaurant.
She is survived by two daughters, Toni Wooten of Virginia and Teri Kline of Baltimore; a son, Troy Kline of Virginia; two sisters, Jennifer Flurie of Virginia and Tina Flurie of Florida; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are by The Cremation Society of Virginia in Richmond, Va.
