Benjamin M. Baer

BROADWAY, Va. - Benjamin Martin Baer, 101, of Broadway, died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999 at Bridgewater Home in Bridgewater, Va.

Born Nov. 24, 1898 in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Henry and Barbara Martin Baer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, whom he married in 1926, Grace Alice Emswiler Baer, in 1965.

He was employed in the tile and floor covering business for a number of years.

He was a member of Bethel Mennonite Church, Broadway.

He is survived by two sons, Leonard F. Baer and Maurice F. Baer, both of Broadway; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at 1:30 p.m. at Lantz Chapel at Bridgewater Home. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bridgewater Home, Virginia Avenue, Bridgewater, VA 22812.

Arrangements are by Grandle Funeral Home, Broadway.

Wilson W. Crouse Sr.

WINCHESTER, Va. - Wilson William Crouse Sr., 75, of 1866 Cedar Grove Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born June 3, 1924, in Hampshire County, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Thomas and Eva Puffinberger Crouse Pease.

He was a retired truck driver.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He attended Hebron Baptist Church in Gore, Va.

He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Rhodes of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Brenda Crouse of Crozet, Va. and Sandra Hedrick of Clearbrook, Va.; a son, Wilson W. Crouse Jr. of Winchester; seven sisters, Madeline Offord, Catherine Householder and Darlene Maupin, all of Martinsburg, Susan Semler and Elsie Long, both of Hagerstown, Mildred Mahoney of Inwood, W.Va. and Ruby Boden of Hancock; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Giffin Funeral Home in Capon Bridge, W.Va. The Rev. George Reed will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery in Whitacre, Va.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, P.O. Box 525, Winchester, VA 22604.

Robert C. Shull

BIRNAMWOOD, Wis. - Robert C. "Chuck" Shull, 41, of N4602 Oakcrest Drive, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at his home.

Born Jan. 19, 1958, in Arlington, Va., he was the son of Ralph and Mildred Graft Shull of Hagerstown.

He was employed by SNE Enterprises in Mosinee, Wis.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Karla Shull; a daughter, Lauren May Shull, at home; two stepsons, Corey Rice and Everett Rice, both at home; a sister, Georgia Tharp of North Manchester, Ind.; two brothers, James Shull of Conifer, Colo., and Thomas Shull of Damascus, Md.; and 13 nieces and nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. Florian's Catholic Church in Hatley, Wis. The Rev. Thomas Abraham will officiate.

Friends may call Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Florian's Catholic Church of Hatley; The Birnamwood Area Community Cupboard; or The Renal Cancer Research Society.

Arrangements are by Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home in Birnamwood.

Harry S. Baumgardner

WINCHESTER, Va. - Harry Samuel Baumgardner, 92, of Winchester, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Va.

Born July 29, 1907, in Carroll County, Md., he was the son of George Roth and Edith Alverta Currens Baumgardner.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Printz. They were married April 15, 1938.

He was a 1924 graduate of Taneytown High School; and attended the University of Maryland, where he played baseball.

He was a self-employed distributor for Tom Houston Co., retiring in 1972. He had owned and operated Baumgardner's Bakery in Harpers Ferry and Charles Town, W.Va.

He served in the U.S. Naval Air Force during World War II.

He was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church in Winchester. He attended Calvary Reformed Presbyterian Church in Hampton, Va.; and participated at Sunrise House.

He was a Mason and a member of Taneytown, Monocacy Lodge 203.

He is survived by two daughters, Ellen Newsom of Hampton and Nancy Pakter of Berkeley, Calif.; six grandsons, Alex Pakter, David Pakter and Byron Pakter, all of Berkeley and Matt Newsom, Chris Newsom and David Newsom, all of Hampton; and a granddaughter, Jennifer N. Csontos of Alexandria, Va.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Braddock Street United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles H. Harless will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town.

William E. Davis Sr.

FRONT ROYAL, Va. - William Edgar Davis Sr., 79, of Front Royal, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at his home.

Born Aug. 13, 1920, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Beulah Grace Ridenour Davis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Myrtle Winters Davis.

He retired from Potomac Edison Company.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corp. Pacific Theater.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Front Royal.

He was an honorary member of Millwood Station Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, a member of American Legion Giles B. Cook Post 53 of Front Royal, Winchester Elks Lodge No. 867, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 829, Front Royal Eagles Aerie 4265, and VFW Post 1860.

He is survived by three daughters, Constance C. "Connie" Mitchell and Juanita Yvonne Spencer, both of Front Royal, and Jeannie Pang of Annandale, Va.; a son, William E. Davis Jr.; three sisters, Mildred Raymer and Dorothy Saunders, both of Hagerstown, and Pauline Mundorff of Chambersburg, Pa.; three brothers, Benjamin Davis, Perry Davis and Jerry Davis, all of Hagerstown; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Fern Davis, and a brother, Carroll R. Davis.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, 1200 N. Shenandoah Ave. in Front Royal. The Rev. Jerry Young will officiate and Dr. John Harden will read the eulogy. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park in Winchester, Va.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary L. Roby

FALLS CHURCH, Va. - Mary Lou Roby, 71, of Falls Church, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at Arlington (Va.) Hospital.

Born Feb. 5, 1928, in Washington D.C., she was the daughter of the late Louis F. and Mary Logan Leech.

She was of the Catholic faith.

She attended public schools in the District of Columbia.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Sheetmetal Workers Union Local No. 2; she was a homemaker.

She was a member of AARP.

She is survived by her husband, Somerset Dyson "Sam" Roby; a daughter, Karen L. Recknor of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, Robert Leech of Deale Island, Md.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Leech; and a brother, Richard Leech.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 9, at noon at Glenwood cemetery, 2219 Lincoln Road, N.E., Washington D.C. The Rev. Joseph Catrombone will officiate.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
