Bernard F. Smith
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Dr. Bernard Fletcher Smith, 75, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, of prostate cancer.
Born Dec. 30, 1923, in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of the late Bernard Joseph and Sarah Fletcher Smith.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in forestry from North Carolina State College; and a master's of science from Duke University, where he was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. In 1959, he earned a doctor of dental surgery degree from the Medical College of Virginia.
He practiced family dentistry in Rustburg, Va., and Lynchburg for 33 years.
He held the title of Fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Lynchburg Dental Society and the Virginia Dental Association. He was a member of the Virginia and American dental associations and was president of the Lynchburg Dental Society and the Piedmont Dental Society. He was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society.
He was a founding member of Central Virginia Health Planning Council and on the boards of directors of the Free Clinic of Central Virginia and the Hill City Exchange Club; and a member of Toastmasters International.
He was a member of Lynchburg Roadrunners, on the boards of directors of the Lynchburg Area Track and Field Club and the Lynchburg Sports Clubs; and was an organizer of the Virginia 10-Miler. He was named Lynchburg Squash Club Athlete of the Year after completing the Boston Marathon in 1969.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
A member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, he was a lector, on the Parish Council and a choir member. He was a member of Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Charlotte Stell Smith; six children, Rebecca Smith Bouygues of Paris, Bernard Fletcher Smith Jr. of Hagerstown, Martha Smith Rogers of Norfolk, Liz Smith of Lynchburg, Jennifer Smith Nice of Sacramento, Calif., and Susannah Smith Schlauch of Granite Bay, Calif.; a sister, Ann Fletcher Smith of Scotch Plains, N.J.; a brother, James A. Smith of Norfolk; and 15 grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be offered Friday at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 710 Clay St., Lynchburg, followed by burial in Holy Cross cemetery at Bedford and Rivermont Avenues, Lynchburg.
A prayer service will be today at 7 p.m., followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. at the church.

Russell W. Hechinger
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Russell W. Hechinger, 84, of Joyce Road, died Friday, June 18, 1999, at the home of his son, Russell M. Hechinger, with whom he lived.
Born Oct. 28, 1914, in Reading, Pa., he was the son of the late William Hechinger.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Mason Hechinger, in 1998.
He was employed by Weaver Brothers Inc. as a property manager from 1963 to 1989 in Chevy Chase, Md.
He retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel. He served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
He was of the Presbyterian faith.
In addition to his son, he is survived by a daughter, Christine Heneghan of Cary, N.C.; a brother, William Hechinger of West Lawn, Pa.; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Viola Dry; and a brother, Theodore Hechinger.
A graveside service will be Tuesday at noon at Parkhead cemetery, Big Pool, Md. The Rev. George W. Glick will officiate. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

Ruth E. Kline
WINCHESTER, Va. - Ruth Elizabeth Kline, 71, of Winchester, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at her home.
Born Jan. 23, 1928, in Stephens City, Va., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Robertus and Annie Laurie Orndorff Kline.
She was a line worker with O'Sullivan Corp. She retired in 1991 from Doubleday in Berryville, Va.
She was a member of Worldwide Church of God.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, whom she raised, Margaret Shanholtz of Falling Waters, W.Va., Joyce Marie Massie of St. Augustine, Fla., and Ralph E. Kline Jr. of Cumberland, Md.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph E. Kline Sr.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mount Hebron cemetery. The Rev. Peter Whitting will officiate.

Patricia A. Brooks
NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. - Patricia Ann Brooks, 52, of North Tazewell, died Sunday, June 6, 1999, at a hospital in Richlands, Va.
Born May 13, 1947, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Mary Ann J. Kimmel and stepdaughter of Charles M. Kimmel Jr. of Hagerstown.
She attended Church on the Rock in Tazewell.
In addition to her mother and stepfather, she is survived by her husband, Bruce H. Brooks; a stepdaughter, Dena K. Garrett; a stepson, Ronald H. Brooks, both of Burnet, Texas; two sisters, Lynda A. Darr and Peggy S. Moore, both of Hagerstown; and seven grandchildren.

Helen L. Mason
WINCHESTER, Va. - Helen Louise Snapp Mason, 72, of Winchester, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at Winchester Medical Center.
Born April 13, 1927, in Winchester, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Gertie Lotus Snapp.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Paul Mason Sr.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Round Hill United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Gerrard and Shirley Tisdale, both of Winchester, and Judy Alderman of Gore, Va.; two sons, Hubert P. Mason Jr. and Freddie C. Mason, both of Winchester; a brother, Louis Snapp of Stephenson, Va.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel in Martinsburg. The Rev. Doug Hardy will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
