Clarence Ray Chandler
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Ray Chandler, 76, of 156 Stratford Place, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born July 8, 1926, in Danville, he was the son of Clarence Yancey Chandler and Martha Gerald Chandler.
He served in the U.S. Navy for two years during World War II prior to serving 27 years in the U.S. Air Force. He later worked for the City of Danville from 1972 until 1991 in the utilities department.
He was of the Presbyterian faith and a member of the VFW.
He was married to Barbara Jean Setliff Chandler.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by one son, Lt. Col. David Winston Chandler of Bellbrook, Ohio; one daughter, Athena Diann O'Connor of Wilmington, N.C. and seven grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Lester Gayton officiating.
There will be a private burial.
The family will be at the residence.

Tillman Evans
CHATHAM, Va. - Bruce Tillman Evans, 71, died Jan. 21, 2003, in Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for the past three months and in the hospital for the last six days.
Born Nov. 2, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Upson Bruce Evans and Hallie Tillman Evans, who predeceasedhim.
He had lived all his life in Pittsylvania County. He was owner and president of the former Durham Hosiery Mill and was a charter member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a Military Policeman.
He is survived by one daughter, Brenda Evans Moore, of Marshville, N.C.; three brothers, Ernest Leroy Evans of Manassas, Va., Charles Leon Evans of Fort Mill, S.C. and Robert (Bobby) Daniel Evans of Taylor, S.C.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Joyce Evans Gauldin.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Robert Hardy officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by Dan River American Legion Post #1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of his granddaughter, Sue Gibson, 8763 Martinsville Hwy, Danville.

Jean Edwards Hancock
DANVILLE, Va. - Jean Edwards Hancock, 89, formerly of 1609 Glenn St., died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born May 13, 1913, in Danville, she was a daughter of John Thomas Edwards and Mary Elizabeth Edwards.
She had worked as an inspector for Dan River, Inc. She was also a homemaker. She was a member of the Dan River Retirees' Club. She was a member of Third Avenue Christian Church and had attended Calvary Baptist Church for several years.
She was married to Leo James "Tody" Hancock, who predeceased her.
She is survived by a daughter, Donna Tilbury of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Via McCune of Danville; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sons, David L. Hancock and Ronald W. Hancock; a brother, Jesse Edwards and two sisters, Ethel E. Mann and Nell E. Branscomb.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Markham officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Albert Curtis Keatts
ALTAVISTA, Va. - Albert Curtis Keatts, 65, of 805 7th St., died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Dec. 29, 1937, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Bob Berkley Keatts and Susie Pearl Dove Keatts.
He was a retired employee of Burlington Industries. Following his retirement, he worked at Steve's Florist. He was a member of Spring Road Baptist Church, where he was a member of the choir and was a former Sunday School secretary.
He is survived by four brothers, Herbert Keatts of Gretna, Harold Keatts of Midlothian, James Keatts of Hurt and Harold Perkins of Altavista; five sisters, Lottie Lynch of Ringgold, Pearleen Kent of Blanch, N.C., Christine Perkins, Edna Patterson and Ella Harvey, all of Hurt.
He was predeceased by a brother, Chesley Keatts.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Spring Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian Faison and the Rev. Gene Ashworth officiating. Interment will follow in Altavista Memorial Park.

Sheneice Antonia Kennedy
FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Sheneice Antonia Kennedy, 26, of 148 South Daugherty St., died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was the daughter of Deborah Wilson and Euree Walters. She was the stepdaughter of Larry D. Beard and Vanessa Walters.
She was married to Desmond Kennedy and was a three year veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, her mother of Fayetteville, N.C. and father of Virginia Beach, Va., she is survived by two sons, David Kennedy and Sean Kennedy, both of the home; two daughters, Dejza Walters and Debra Kennedy, both of the home; one brother, Eric Walters of Danville, Va.; and three sisters, Nicole Beard of Fayetteville, Angela Beard of Clearwater, Fla. and Crystal Walters of Danville, Va.
The funeral will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday from the Manna Church with Pastor Tyrant Davenport officiating. Interment will follow in the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, N.C.

Kathryn E. Lyke
DANVILLE, Va. - Kathryn E. Lyke, 87, of 2344 Riverside Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 18, 1915, in Avoca, N.Y., she was the daughter of William H. Lyke and Ethel Taylor Lyke.
She graduated from Avoca High School in June 1933. She worked for Bendix Corporation in Elmira, N.Y., where she worked assembling security materials for Navy defense contracts.
She attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Ill., graduating in August 1944 from a two-year course in children's work. She went to work in Rochester, N.Y. for Taylor Instrument Companies until 1950, then became employed by Hawkeye Works of Eastman Kodak until moving to Charlottesville in 1971. She moved to Danville in 1983.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

James Elvin Mullins
LYNCHBURG, Va. - James Elvin Mullins, 55, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003.
Mr. Mullins was born Oct. 30, 1947, in Danville, a son of the late Elvin Noel Mullins and Thelma Louise Henson Mullins. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, was employed by Georgia-Pacific, where he worked as a sludge press operator, and was a member of North Bedford Baptist Church. He participated with Lynchburg Little League Association for several years as a softball coach and was a member of Rim Fire Hunt Club in Amherst.
He is survived by a daughter, Kasey Ferguson and husband, Daniel, of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Kaydan Danielle Ferguson and Daniel Stuart Ferguson Jr.; three sisters, Brenda Smith and husband, Theron, Vickie Barbour and husband, Robert and Jan Case and husband, Tim, all of Danville; two brothers, Steven Mullins and wife, Jackie, of Danville and Noel Mullins and wife, Michelle, of North Carolina, and several nieces and nephews.

Dreamy Winter Rose Overstreet
DANVILLE, Va. - Dreamy Winter Rose Overstreet, four months, of 704 North Main St., Apt. #3, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born September 2, 2002, in Danville, she was the daughter of Brandon David Overstreet and Sarah Alison Cox Overstreet.
In addition to her parents, of the residence, she is survived by one brother, Jacob Overstreet, of Danville and one sister, Dixie Cox of Danville; maternal grandparents, Wayne and Nancy Hogan of Gretna; and paternal grandparents, Melvin and Vicky Overstreet of Keeling.

DANVILLE, Va. - Charlie Jim Rice, 77, of 431 Gay St., died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 9, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Roosevelt and Beatrice Rice, who predeceased him.
For many years he was employed by the now defunct Harnsberger Department Store.
He was married to Helen Rice, who predeceased him earlier this month.
He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Diane Keene, Linda Rice and Nancy Rice, all of Danville; one son, Bruce Rice, also of Danville and a host of grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Charlie Rice Jr. and a sister, Lucille Smith.

DANVILLE, Va. - Nancy Carol Akins Russell, 64, of 196 Mayo St., died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 13, 1938, in Danville, she was the daughter of Burnest Akins and Nannie Goins Akins.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
She was married to James Henry Russell, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three daughters, Kim Scott, Lee Brooks and Robin Glass, all of Danville; two sons, Barry Russell and Ray Russell, both of Danville; a stepson, Steve Malloy of Richmond; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Chester Akins.

Loyd Hampton Scarce Jr.
DRY FORK, Va. - Loyd Hampton Scarce Jr., 69, of 2289 Whitmell School Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health and three weeks in the hospital.
Born Jan. 15, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Loyd Hampton Scarce Sr. and Danie Pearl Thornton Scarce.
He lived his entire life in the Whitmell community of Pittsylvania County. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company where he worked as a tire press operator. Prior to working at Goodyear, he worked for many years at Dan River Mills, Inc. as a supervisor.
He attended Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was president of the Whitmell Stump Club at Mill's Store. He was a master gardener.
He married Mildred Yeatts Scarce on Jan. 28, 1955.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Cynthia S. Heist, M.D. of Danville and Cheryl Scarce Bowman of Dry Fork; a son, Michael Hampton Scarce of Keeling; two brothers, Russell Hugh Scarce of Danville and Ralph Daniel Scarce of Lynchburg; a sister, Ruth Ann Glover of Whitmell; six grandchildren and three step grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Scarce.

Rev. Collie Seymour
THOMASVILLE, N.C. - The Rev. Collie Seymour, 84, of the Piedmont Center, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003.
Born Feb. 1, 1918, in Madison County, Ga., he was a son of John T. Seymour and Evie Phelps Seymour.
He served as pastor of United Church of Christ and served at churches in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia for over 50 years.
He was married to Christine Watson Seymour.
In addition to his wife of Thomasville, he is survived by two daughters, Janet Elizabeth of Wagram, N.C. and Susan Dell of South Boston, Va.; three sons, Robert Wayne of Reidsville, the Rev. Dr. David Maurice of Tulsa, Okla. and Benjamin Collie of Tryon; two sisters, Geraldine S. Harley of Ninetysix, S.C. and Loretta S. Hamlin of North Augusta, S.C.; a brother, Richard Seymour of Hartwell, Ga. and four grandchildren.
