HIWASSEE - Frances Loraine Bond Peterson, age 67 of 5949 Linkous Ferry Road, Hiwassee Born April 20, 1936 in Wythe County, Va. she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Beulah Sawyers Bond. Surviving are: her son, Donald Peterson, Jr., Hiwassee; grandchildren, April and Randy Goble, Hiwassee; brothers, Glen Bond, Hillsville, Guy and Carolyn Bond, Ky.; sisters, Betty and Russell Varner, Ohio, Joyce Cole, Hillsville, Virginia and Darrell Jennings, Hillsville. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with the Rev. William Edmonds officiating. Cemetery. SHAWSVILLE - William Thomas Wilburn age 75 of Shawsville, death by his wife, Mary Virginia Barten Wilburn his parents, Claude B. and Lyndell Harris Wilburn and also by two brothers, Jesse and Don Wilburn. Survivors include four sons, Alan Wilburn of Christiansburg, Monte Wilburn of Parrott, Wade Wilburn of Round Rock, Texas and Troy Wilburn of Boca Raton, Fla.; two brothers, Robert Wilburn of Suffolk and Wade Wilburn of Christiansburg; four sisters, Norma Alliff of Cave Springs, Ruth Wilburn of Pulaski, Jane Wilburn and Patsy Caldwell both of Radford; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Riverview Holiness Church in Christiansburg with the Rev. George Jarrell officiating. Chris was a long standing entrepeneur in Pulaski with his brother Danny. They owned and operated Washington Cafe from 1946 until 1967 when it closed. Chris then operated Virginia Lunch until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Roanoke. Surviving are: his loving wife, Olga Vlahos, Pulaski; daughter, Mary Dalton and her husband, Gary and their son, Nickolas Andrew, Rockville, Va.; son, Dr. Gus Vlahos and his wife, Debbie and their children, Christopher Bernard and Stephanie Nicole, Dublin; sister, Georgia Kitcines, Athens, Greece; numerous nieces and nephews.died Friday night, June 20, 2003 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was death by a daughter, Patricia “Pat” McCormick, by a grandson, Perry McCormick and by a granddaughter, Peggy McCormick. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Coburn Fanning of Dublin; a son, Lon Fanning, and wife, Donna, of Geneva, Ill.; a sister, Virginia Affeldt, Winston-Salem, N.C.; and six grandchildren, Cody and Chelsea Snider, Sean, Jason, Lauren and Kristen Fanning. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate with the Rev. Gina Rhea officiating. SGT. MICHEAL E. DOOLEY
PULASKI - Sgt. Micheal E. Dooley, 23, shot and killed Sunday night, June 8, 2003, at a check point in Iraq. The Ft. Carson soldier was part of the Third Armored Calvary Regimen, 1st Squadron, Troop B. A 1998 graduate of Pulaski County High School in Virginia, he joined the army immediately after and spent 7 months with the peace keeping forces in Bosnia. During that time Micheal’s future wife, Christine Garard of Murrysville, had begun mailing letters to him through an Adopt-A-Platoon program. When he returned to Ft. Stewart, Ga. he traveled to meet Christine in person. Christine says “we became best friends and fell in love. I knew from the first second I saw him that he’d be the man I’d marry”. They exchanged vows on Mar. 7, 2002 and had a formal ceremony February 22, 2003. Micheal and Christine are expecting their first child in October. In Christine’s words, “I want everyone to know that Micheal was a loving, caring, and brave man. I was always so proud of him and always will be. I respected him for serving our country, and he will always be my hero. I will keep his spirit alive. He was so excited about becoming a father. Last week he chose a name for the baby boy we are expecting. Last time I spoke to him was on Friday night. He was on his way to the promotion board and wanted to hear my voice before he went. He told me he would be home before our baby was passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. DeHaven was a teacher for 30 years mostly in Pulaski County, She was a member of Dublin United Methodist Church and a member of the choir. She was also a volunteer for CASA. She was preceded in funeral service will be held Thursday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Dublin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Travis officiating. Burial will be in the DeHaven Family passed away Sunday, June 15, 2003 at Mariner Healthcare, Orlando, Fla. death by three sisters, Blanche Abell Hill, Ruby Abell Garlic, and Nellie Frances Abell, and two brothers, Ralph Abell and Arnold Abell. While in Pulaski, she had worked for the former Paul’s Knitting Mills and also Dee’s Cut Rate Store on Main Street. Surviving are: her daughter, Rhonda Semones, Orlando; sisters, Grace Abell Thornton, Pleasant Garden, N. C., Helen Louise Abell Taylor, Pulaski; brother Elmer D. Abell, Pulaski. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Friday 2 p.m. at Thornspring Cemetery, Pulaski with Rev. Dale Akers officiating. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski and Dobbs Funeral Home, Orlando, Fla. are handling the arrangements for the family.
