ROBERT JETT INGRAM, JR.
STAUNTON - Robert Jett Ingram, Jr. (Rob), 46, a recent resident of Staunton, born July 24, 1956, at Fort George G. Mead, Maryland, but spent his early years in Pulaski, Virginia. He is a graduate of Pulaski High School where he participated in varsity football and other sports. Thereafter, he attended and was a 1978 B.A. graduate of Washington & Lee University with a double major in politics and religion. In 1981, he received his Juris Doctor degree from the Washington & Lee School of Law. While in law school, Rob was a writer for the Washington & Lee Law Review. Subsequently, he entered the private practice of law with the Gilmer, Sadler, Ingram, Sutherland & Hutton law firm in its Blacksburg office. Over the years, Rob's law career encompassed a wide spectrum of pursuits, as a plaintiff's counsel, as a defense attorney, as a solo practitioner and as a public prosecutor. During this time, Rob was privileged to have served with the Atlanta, Georgia law firm of Hurt, Richardson, Garner, Todd and Cadenheand; with the Roanoke law firm of Wooten Hart; and with the Charlottesville law firm of Tremblay & Smith; and as a Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Waynesboro. From 1994 to 1998, he also served as an Administrative Hearing Officer for the Supreme Court of Virginia, primarily hearing cases for the Department of Education and the Department of Employee Relations Counselors. Having a lifelong yearning to be more involved in His Lord's work, Rob took a sabbatical from his law endeavors in 1988, entering Yale University to attend its Divinity School. He received his Master of Arts in Religion from Yale University in 1990. During his time at Yale and because of his legal background, Rob served as Special Counsel to the President of Yale University, having been recruited by that office to act as Special Liaison with the University's major benefactors, providing legal and political accounting for the use of its grants. Following Yale, he returned to the private practice of law in Virginia, moving to Charlottesville. Recently, Rob enjoyed serving as a special attorney with the Virginia Office for Protection and Advocacy, in its Staunton office, an agency dedicated to serving the disabled and other disadvantaged citizens throughout Virginia. Rob never met a stranger and loved all people. His engaging smile, quick wit, gift of conversation, and his competitive advocacy for his law clients will not be readily forgotten. Rob's life as a Christian lawyer, as a Sunday School teacher, as a lay reader for his church, as a member of the Diocesan Commission on Ministry, and as a civic volunteer was a search that served God and others. He had an innate desire to become a priest in his own right and to be ever closer to his Maker; now that dream has come to pass.
