MICHAEL L. LEFLER
MAX MEADOWS - Michael L. Lefler, 49, of Max Meadows, Va., death by his father, James T. Lefler; step-father, Fred H. McKinney; grandmother, Fannie M. Mills and grandfather, Aaron J. Peake, Sr. He was employed by Shortt Landscaping and Construction Co. in Easton, Md. Michael was a caring and kind person and a friend to all who knew him. He is survived by, mother, Mary Lou McKinney, Max Meadows; sister, Donna L. Clark, Max Meadows; brother, Marty McKinney, Max Meadows; step children, Rodney Jones, Renee Dunford, both Max Meadows. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 16, at 2 p.m. in the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Lindamood officiating. Cemetery in Pulaski. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va. is in charge of arrangements.

BLANCHE RUTH ROOPE, 87, OF 5813 Wilderness Rd., Newbern, Va. Born August 23, 1915 in Newbern, she was the daughter of the late Dora Swaim Roope and William Howard Roope. She was a member of the Newbern United Methodist Church, a volunteer at the Pulaski Community Hospital, active in the Newbern Community Club, a driver for the motor pool at the New River Ordinance Plant during World War II and had worked at Seagle’s Pharmacy in her early years. In her business life she had worked for Sears as an auditor for many years and had traveled in seven states with her work. Miss Roope was preceded in Cemetery with Rev. Ann Blair officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle and Sons Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Newbern United Methodist Church or the charity of choice.
GEORGE ARTHUR (RUSTY) EDWARDS, III
HIWASSEE - George Arthur (Rusty) Edwards, III, 56 of 4009 Lead Mines Road, Hiwassee, Va. (the Snowville Community), went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 12, 2003. He was Cemetery, Snowville. Visiting will be Tuesday evening at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski where the family wishes that memorials be made to the Snowville Fire Department or to the Cecil’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Pulaski, VA.

MADELINE S. POUND
PULASKI - Madeline S. Pound, 78, of Pulaski, born in Lynchburg, Virginia on Oct. 25, 1924 and was the daughter of the late Charles and Dora Spencer. Madeline was a retied Pulaski County school teacher. At the center of her life was her church, Dublin United Methodist. She served the Lord well through many facets of church service. Madeline was the first woman to serve as chair of the church’s Administrative Board, long-time teacher of the Friendship Bible Class and a member of the original building committee. She took great pride in being a part of the United Methodist Women and the Seekers Group. She served as president of the local UMW and the Wytheville District UMW. She was a member of the Holston Conference UMW mission team and was a delegate to the Holston Annual Conference. Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Dr. Winsdon N. Pound of Pulaski; son, Charles W. “Chuck” Pound and his wife, Michele, of Roanoke; daughter, Carolyn P. Jarrells and her husband, Jeff, of Mechanicsville; five grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Pound, and Vincent, Rachael, and Joseph Jarrells; and two sisters, Margaret S. Howell and her husband, Warren, of Lynchburg, and Thelma S. Puryear and her husband, Gene, of Lexington, S.C. The Cemetery. Visiting will be Monday evening from the Dublin United Methodist Church where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Rebuilding Fund of the Dublin United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 577, Dublin, Va. 24084 or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 554, Roanoke, Va. 24013. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.

SYLVIA QUESENBERRY VAUGHN
MARTINSVILLE - Sylvia Quesenberry Vaughn, 72, of Martinsville, born on Oct. 8, 1930, in Carroll County and was a retired employee of the American Furniture Company. She was preceded in died Friday, May 30, 2003 at Meadville Medical Center. He was a son of Lyman Henry and Margaret Adam Dewey. He born in Del Rio, Texas on December 31, 1941. She was preceded in passed away after a long battle with cancer and went to be with her Lord Tuesday, July 8, 2003. She worked at Longwood Elastomers in Wytheville, Va. for 26 years. She is survived by two daughters, Melissa Michelle McVey, of the home, Heather Dawn McVey Beavers, Portsmouth, Va.; two grandchildren; one expected grandchild; two sisters, Brenda Byrd of Johnson City, Tenn., Frances Atwell, Fayetteville, N.C.; three brothers, Roger “Jock” Aker, Stephen “Leg” Aker, Max Meadows, Harry “Sonny” Aker, Wytheville. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 11, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ted Anders and the Rev. Bobby Lewis officiating. Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday or at the residence at any time. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, is in charge of arrangements.

BETTY ANN BROWN FAGG
PULASKI - Betty Ann Brown Fagg, 46, of Pulaski, Born February 7, 1957 in Wythe County, she was the daughter of the late Betty Sage Brown and Paul Brown. Also preceding her in Interment will follow in Thorn Spring died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at the home of her parents, Raymond and Mae Chinault, Pulaski. She was Cemetery. Visiting will be Friday evening at Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m The family will be meeting at the residence of Mrs. Wade’s parents, Raymond and Mae Chinault, 1961 Snider Lane, Pulaski. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, Va.

FRANCES BUSH HOPCROFT
RADFORD - Frances Bush Hopcroft, 76, of 6841 Morgan Farm Road, Radford (Pulaski County), born in Roanoke, Va. on Jan. 6, 1927 and was the daughter of the late Arthur Noah Reed Bush and Cecil Lillian Farris Bush. She was also preceded in died Monday, July 7, 2003, at the Reflections Alzheimer’s Program, Greenbriar Terrace Healthcare, where she had resided since 1997. Mrs. Hopkins was married, in Virginia, on Dec. 21, 1941. In her early adult years, Mrs. Hopkins worked as a court stenographer and then as an administrative secretary for 20th Century Fox Studio’s. Later she developed a career as a private caterer in New Jersey and eventually in Arizona. She was a former chef at Scottsdale Country Club, in Scottsdale, Ariz., and at Desert Hills Country Club, in Carefree, Ariz. During her retirement years, she was the beloved daycare mom for her grandson and for children of close friends. She enjoyed traveling, camping, photography, gardening and delighting others with her elegant gourmet recipes. She will be fondly remembered for her determination, strong work ethic, love for children, humor and compassion for others. After graduating from Pulaski High School, Mrs. Hopkins nurtured her career and hobbies by completing coursework in catering and culinary arts at New York Institute of Dietetics and Phoenix College and by completing coursework at the New York Institute of Photography. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kathleen Hopkins, of Amherst, N. H.; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Scott and Kristie Hopkins, of Phoenix, Ariz; two granddaughters, Heather Hopkins and Alison Hopkins, both of Amherst, N. H.; and her many friends at the Reflections Alzheimer’s Program, and Arizona friends who continued their loving support throughout her illness. A private memorial service is being arranged. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make a memorial donation to the Day Away Program - an Alzheimer’s Respite Day Program - at St. John Neumann Church, 708 Milford Road, Merrimack, N. H. 03054, to be used to help develop additional Day Away programs.

HELEN REBECCA HOLMES
RICHMOND - Helen Rebecca Holmes, 85, formerly of Pulaski, Born April 29, 1918 in Pulaski, she was the daughter of the late Pansy Seldomridge Holmes and Henry Hart Holmes. She was also preceded in interment will take place in Oakwood born in Del Rio, Texas on December 31, 1941. She was preceded in died early Monday morning, July 7, 2003, in the New River Valley Medical Center, Radford. She was death by a brother, Benny Ray Adkins, and by a husband, J. C. Welch. Surviving are: her husband of 27 years, Edgar Webb, Dublin; father, Asa Adkins, Dublin; daughter, Karen Welch Baker, Sevierville, Tenn.; son, Ricky J. Welch, Sevierville, Tenn.; brothers, Grant Adkins, Las Vegas, Nev., Johnny Adkins, Pulaski; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Mrs. Webb will be cremated. There will be a memorial service Wednesday at 7 p.m. from the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witness, 1110 Tyler Avenue, Radford, Va. with Steve Waller officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Pulaski, Va.

VIRGINIA HELEN BOND ALEXANDER
PULASKI - Virginia Helen Bond Alexander, age 81, of Pulaski, born in Wythe County August 20, 1922, daughter of the late George W. and Villa Lawson Bond. She was a member of the Church of God and taught Sunday school for many years and was preceded in Interment will follow in the Memorial Christian Church passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2003 in Harriman, Tenn. He was the minister at First Christian Church of Pine Bluff. He taught English and Latin at Radford High School for several years. He was preceded in Interment will follow in the Shelburne Family died Saturday July 5, 2003 in Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. death by her husband Earnest Albert Frazier, a daughter Diane Murray, and two sisters Kathleen Davis and Darlene Tabor. She is survived by a grandson Joe Murray and his wife Lori. A great grandson Phillip Murray. She is also survived by a nephew Allen Davis and his wife Teresa of Pulaski and a neice Rhonda Fanning and her husband Danny of North Carolina. Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin with the Rev. Randall Lawrence officiating. Visiting will be anytime Monday after 2 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Arrangements by Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, Pulaski.
