Lillie Shelton Warren

DANVILLE, Va. - Lillie Shelton Warren, 89, of 142 Rocklawn Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born May 12, 1913, in Chatham, she was a daughter of Robert Shelton and Susie Dodson Shelton.

After moving from Chatham to Danville, she was employed with Dan River before becoming a homemaker. She was an active member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and the JOY Sunday School class.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate generation.

She married John B. Warren on Oct. 7, 1933.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Gwendolyn S. Warren of Atlanta, Ga. and Danville.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541 or to the JOY Sunday School Class, Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, 1024 North Main St., Danville, VA 24540.

Pearl Coleman

DANVILLE, Va. - Pearl Eva Brooks Coleman, 83, formerly of 38 Hylton Ave., died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born August 3, 1918, in Haywood County, N.C., she was the daughter of Reno Brooks and Amanda Calhoun Brooks.

She was married to William Wesley Coleman, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville and had been a patient at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for 10 years. She was a sales clerk at K-Mart prior to retirement and was a member of Burton Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Club and Rebekah's Lodge.

She is survived by two daughters, Carole Travis and Joan Madren, both of Danville; one sister, Ruth Sparks of Pinnacle, N.C.; four grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Wallace Scott and Clarence E. Brooks.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 38 Hylton Ave.

Melinda Towler Lence

DANVILLE, Va. - Melinda Towler Lence, 87, of 120 College Ave., died Monday, July 29, 2002, at the residence. She had been in declining health for five years.

Born June 30, 1915, in Gretna, she was a daughter of Joseph Letcher Towler and Annie Jefferson Towler.

She was married to Dennis Riley Lence, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Chatham and was retired from the Pittsylvania County Health Department. She was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church.

She is survived by one son, J. Glenn Holley of Danville; one daughter, Katie H. Petrick of Danville; one sister, Mrs. Howard Brumfield of Danville; and six grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak Grove Christian Church with the Rev. Frank Fuller officiating. A private interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

Claude Scearce

CASCADE, Va. - Claude Allen Scearce, 87, of 1183 West Fork Road Lot 3, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at his residence.

Born May 17, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Daniel Bruce Scearce and Nannie Dishman Scearce.

He was first married to Anna Collins, who predeceased him, and then married Maggie Parker Scearce, who also predeceased him. He lived most of his life in the Brosville Community and was a well-known farmer. Prior to that, he ran a grocery store in Brosville. He had been in declining health for 10 years and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by seven daughters, Virginia Scearce Brott of Wake, Barbara Meeks of Ridgeway, Barbara Turner of Bassett, Mary Parker of Thomasville, N.C., Lula Mae Hunt of Collinsville, Dianne Dyson of Eden, N.C. and Jimmie Stout of Cascade; two sons, Clyde Allen Scearce of Cascade and Lynwood Hardy of Danville; one sister, Willie Mae Kendrick of Danville; one brother, James Scearce of Danville; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Hall officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Jimmie Stout, 1100 West Fork Road, Cascade.

Harold Scolpini Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Harold Paul Scolpini Sr., 81, of 2001 Stony Mill School Road, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at his residence.

Born Nov. 17, 1920, in White Plains, N.Y., he was the son of Frank and Lillian Scolpini.

He was married to Mildred Hundley Scolpini, who predeceased him. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and played professional baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization prior to joining the Air Force.

He is survived by one daughter, Susan S. Linville of Mocksville, N.C.; three sons, Harold "Skip" Scolpini of Sutherlin, Ronald J. Scolpini of Callands, and Thomas R. Scolpini of Danville; two sisters, Lillian S. Mitchell of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. and Millie S. Campbell of Glennville, Conn.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, Frank Scolpini.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's United Methodist Church with Rev. Gay Hall officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's United Methodist Church and other times at the residence of Thomas R. Scolpini, 578 Indian Trail Road, Danville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

Dexter Trusler

DANVILLE, Va. - Dexter Garland Trusler, 94, of 680 Holland Road, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born Nov. 26, 1907, in Floyd, he was the son of John Robert Trusler and Rebecca Ann Cockram Trusler.

He lived most of his life in Danville and worked as a supply clerk at Dan River Mills. He had been a patient at Piney Forest Health Care for seven years and was the last member of his generation. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with the Rev. Donald Thomas officiating.

The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Dessie Mae Dickerson

DANVILLE, Va. - Dessie Mae Dickerson, 80, of 231 Ivy St., died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born Nov. 10, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William and Nannie Waller Dickerson.

She is survived by two sisters, Velma Lindsey and Frances Walton, both of Danville.

She was predeceased by a brother, Wesley Dickerson.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Guildfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Vann officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at 204 Cunningham St.

Elizabeth R. Griggs

Dry Fork, Va.- Elizabeth R. Griggs, 87, of 936 Cross Stitch Road, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care.

Born March 18, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William E. Griggs and Sallie Davis Griggs.

She was a private duty nurse who was self-employed, and was a member of the Clarktown Presbyterian Church, Chatham.

She is survived by two sisters, Mamie A. Davis of Washington, D.C. and Emily G. Adams of Danville.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Griggs Family Cemetery.

The family received friends 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Mary Louise Litten

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Louise Litten, of 334 Maple Grove Ave., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1919, in Keyser, W.Va., she was the daughter of Horace and Mary Emma Menefee.

She was a mother and homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Florence, Ala.

She is survived by five children, Margo Judy of Danville, Tinker Burkhardt of Hurt, LeeRoy Litten II of Greensboro, N.C., Michael Litten of Brandon, Fla. and Frances G. Clark of Harrisonburg.

She was predeceased by a daughter, LeeAnn Polantz and two brothers, William G. Menefee and Horace F. Menefee.

The funeral was Nov. 7 at Greenville Memorial Gardens in Florence, Ala. The Rev. Leonard McDowell officiated.

A celebration of her life will be held 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the residence of Charles and Margo Judy, 334 Maple Grove Ave.

Shirley Moses Clay

CLOVER, Va. - Shirley Moses Clay, 63, of 1032 Piney Creek Road, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born April 24, 1939, in Person County, he was the son of Noel Duncan Clay and Virginia Clay.

He was a member of the Ephesus Baptist Church, Semora, N.C.

He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Balmer of Henderson, N.C. and Farrah Clay of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Victor L. Clay of Oxford, N.C. and Eric Clay of Clover; six sisters, Barbara Whitt of Roxboro, N.C., Christine Virginia Comer of Vernon Hill, Frances Clay of South Boston, Nancy Duque of Cluster Springs and Rose Currie of Halifax; four brothers, Noel Clay of Kileen, Texas, Overton Clay of Turbeville, Carl Clay of South Boston and Larry Clay of Vernon Hill; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leonard Watlington officiating. Interment will be in the North Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in Virgilina.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home.

William E. "Bill" Dalton

CHESTERFIELD, Va. - William E. "Bill" Dalton, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002.

He was retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad with over 50 years of service.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was married to Doris S. Dalton, who predeceased him.

He is survived by one daughter, Bonnie D. Williamson; one son, William E. Dalton Jr. of Bristol, Va.; two sisters, Ailiene D. Yates and Mildred D. Kenny; one brother, Harvey L. Dalton of Danville; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Raymond S. Dalton. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Clover Hill Baptist Church, 6900 Courthouse Road. There will be a private burial.

A visitation will be held 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity or to Clover Hill Baptist Church.

Garnett B. Dodson

DANVILLE, Va. - Garnett B. Dodson, 90, of 1652 Franklin Turnpike, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 14, 1912, in Danville, he was the son of Joel E. Dodson and Rosa Lee Garrett Dodson.

Most of his life was spent in Danville. For the last three years, he had lived at Outlook Pointe and for the past month he was a resident at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He was self-employed.

He was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II U.S. Army, having served in the European Theater.

He was married to Eula Williford Dodson, who predeceased him on Feb. 5, 1988.

He was the last surviving member of his generation.

He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Schoolfield Baptist Church, with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill and the Rev. Dr. John H. LaRue officiating.

Interment will be in Highland Burial Park with full military honors by American Legion Memorial Post #325.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

At other times they will be at the home of his niece, Elene Farlow, 1652 Franklin Turnpike.

The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Schoolfield Baptist Church, 12 Schoolfield Drive, Danville, VA 24541 or Danville Cancer Association, 2323 Riverside Drive, Danville, VA 24540.
