JAMES WILLIAM GETTYS
DRAPER - James William Gettys, 60, of Draper, Va. born in Ashville, N. C. on Oct. 29, 1942 and was the son of the late William and Mary Blanton Gettys. He was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Pulaski. He retired from the Pulaski County Public Schools in 2001.
Surviving are: his wife, Julia Massie Gettys, Draper; mother-in-law, Mrs. Thomas “Louise” Massie, Pulaski; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shannon M. and James T. Turner, Dublin; niece, Mrs. Chad “Patricia” Davis, Christiansburg; nephew, J. Brian Turner, Blacksburg; two great-nephews, Thomas Davis, Christiansburg, James Davis, Christiansburg; aunt, Mrs. Nelle B. Waters, Charlotte, N. C.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, from Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin with Rev. Vickie Houk and Rev. Terrie Sternberg officiating. Visiting will be Monday evening from Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m.

ELIZABETH DUNCAN TAYLOR WILLIAMS
PULASKI - Elizabeth Duncan Taylor Williams, 85, of 630 Second St., SW, Pulaski, born in Pulaski, on April 6, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Jeese Duncan and Virgie Ellen Duncan. She was also preceded in Cemetery, Baltimore, Md.

O. GREGORY KNISELY
O. Gregory Knisely, 56, formerly of Pulaski County, Born in Roanoke, Va. on August 27, 1947 to the late O. Gregory Knisely, Sr. and Mary Parker "Parkie" Knisely, Greg was well-known for his humor, patience, and woodworking skills. It was rare for a marine carpenter, but his love for boats and the mountains took him from the Florida seas to Southwest Va. several times in his lifetime. He introduced us to Jimmy Buffet, catfish, and laid-back living. He loved the water. As a young boy, he delivered newspapers from his jon-boat along the New River. In his woodworking shop in Hiwassee, Va. the fishing rods at the dock were attached to a bell in the shop. When the bell rang, the work ceased and the fishing began. Living so close to the river, he would often fish from his living room.
Greg once said he wanted all his children to be daughters because "little girls love to hug their daddy's neck." Daughters, Angela "Gee" Knisely Secrest of New Prague, Minn., Heather Knisely of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., Chelsea and Jorden "Jordie" Knisely of Pulaski County, Va. miss him terribly. Also survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janet and Bob Vogel of Fairfax, Va. and Martha and Chris Kimbel of Atlanta, Ga.; nieces and nephews, Julie, Brad, Ross, Laura, and Paige; and two grandsons, Michael and Christopher Secrest of Summerville, Ga.
Friends, like family, Chris Gregory, Dory Howard, Jim and Nancy Mooring, Tommy Aldermen, Kim, Shawn, Amy, Andy, and Kayla Price, Rick and Sandy and others will miss you, Greg. Fondly remembered by Sharon Knisely and Karita Knisely.
Condolences may be sent to the Knisely families c/o Pulaski Presbyterian Church, 975 Memorial Drive, Pulaski, Va. 24301. Donations, in memory of Greg, may be sent to Hiwassee Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Gilbert Atkins, Lead Mine Road, Hiwassee, Va. 24347.

BEULAH RHEA HAWKINS BAKER
Beulah Rhea Hawkins Baker, 96 formerly of Westwood Dive, Pulaski, Born April 13, 1907 in Pulaski, Va., she was the daughter of the late William Albert Hawkins and Sarah Margaret Mabe Hawkins. She was preceded in Interment will follow in Shiloh passed away Thursday, September 18, 2003 at University of Virginia Medical Hospital. Survivors include three daughters and son-in-law, Heather Dunham of Stuarts Draft, Holly and William Whitlock of Va. Beach, and Mary Viers of Radford; her mother, Evelyn W. Smart Semones of Radford; four grandchildren, Alexandria Whitlock, Daniel Dunham, Ashley Whitlock, and Matthew Whitlock; and her best friend, Linda Whitlock.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 21, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Rev. Dallas Vines officiating. passed away Friday, September 19, 2003.
funeral service will be conducted Monday at 7 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with Rev. Martha Yeomans officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service.

BETTY JANE DeHART PAYNE
Betty Jane DeHart Payne, 68 of Red Hill Loop, Max Meadows, Va. born in Wythe County October 8, 1934 the daughter of the late Rev. Harless and Virgie Lou Peak DeHart. She was a member of Pickett's Chapel Church of God and was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.
She was preceded in Interment will follow in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, in Montgomery County. He was a long time Pulaski resident and was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. H. R. Farley and the grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Keister, a local pharmacist for many years. Mr. Farley was Cemetery, Pulaski. Visiting will be Friday evening at Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

HERMAN JAY FICKE
WYTHEVILLE - Herman Jay Ficke, age 85, of Asbury Place in Wytheville and formerly of Alexandria, Va., born Oct. 1, 1917 in New York to the late Herman and Margarrette Ficke who emigrated from Oldenburg, Germany in 1908. He was educated at New York University and at Southeastern University and on the “streets of New York.” A World War II veteran, he served in the Army Airforce and then worked for forty years as a fabric buyer for Kahn’s Department Store and The House of Fine Fabrics in Alexandria. His wife of 55 years, Clara Truman Ficke, predeceased him in 1996.
Survivors include sons Clark (Patty) of Santa Barbara, Calif., Robert (Susan) of Pulaski, Va.; daughters Judith F. Myers (Dale) of West Jefferson, Ohio and Patricia F. Young (Mike) of Alexandria, Va.; grandchildren are Joseph Ficke of Washington, D. C., Jennifer Ficke of Clarksville, Tenn., Matt (Kit) Ficke of Springfield, Va., Bianca Myers of Columbus, Ohio, Zachary Myers of West Jefferson, Ohio, David T. Ficke of Pulaski, Va. and Rebecca J. Young of Alexandria, Va.
He was a teller of tales, a singer of songs and a lovable rascal. He wrote a two-volume account of his life to leave as part of his legacy. He loved “his family” at Asbury Place who made the last seven years of his life such a joy. He was a member of the Mother Church, First Church Christ Scientist of Boston, Mass. and found strength and comfort worshipping with the Methodist church family at Asbury Place.
Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of arrangements. There will be no funeral. Graveside services will be private in the Shiloh passed away Thursday, September 18, 2003. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He retired from the U. S. Navy with 20 years service and served during WWII. He served for the Gideons and was a part of numerous short term trips in Mexico and John’s Island, SC. He also retired from the U. S. Postal Service. He was preceded in passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2003 in the Pulaski Health Care Center. death. He was retired from Sears with 13 years of service. He was of Baptist faith.
Surviving are: his devoted wife of 58 years, Ila Mae Swecker Stilwell, Pulaski; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth (Dawn) and George D. Dearman, Meridian, Miss.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Linda Stilwell, Dublin, Guy Nelson and Fern Stilwell, Roanoke; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Laura Bell and husband, James Thomas, Roanoke, Minnie Mae Surratt, Hillsville; brother, Isaac and wife, Sylvia Stilwell, Hillsville; sister-in-law, Winters Stilwell, Galax; several nieces and nephews; two very special friends, Doug Phibbs of Pulaski and David Watson of Lilydale.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning 11 a.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with Rev. Johnny Howlett and Rev. L. J. Rippey officiating. Cemetery, Carroll County. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.
