Orange Fitzgerald Jr.
CHATHAM, Va. - Orange Fitzgerald Jr., 80, of 438 Hodnett Mill Road, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002 in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 11, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Orange Fitzgerald Sr. and Emma Stone Fitzgerald.
He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, the church treasurer, a member of the deacon board, trustee board and a member of the Senior Choir. He was retired from Lorillard Tobacco Company.
He was married to Octavia Climents Fitzgerald.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by four daughters, Floretta Stone of Chatham, Betty Fitzgerald of Hurt and Amanda Barksdale and Michelle Foster, both of Danville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. William Tarpley officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be 4-6 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home.

Alysia Ruth Haak
BLANCH, N.C. - Alysia Ruth Haak, 10, of 2615 N.C. Highway 62 North, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Born Sept. 30, 1992, in Corpus Christy, Texas, she was the daughter of Stanley P. Haak Jr. and Melissa Street Haak.
In addition to her parents, of the residence, she is survived by one sister, Jamie Haak, of the residence, three brothers, Ryan Haak, Aaron Haak and Jordan Haak, all of the residence; grandparents, Helen M. Reed and Richard Street, both of New York, Sandra M. Haak of Blanch, N.C. and Stanley Haak Sr. of Corpus Christy, Texas; and two great-grandmothers, Elsie Smith and Marion Haak, both of New York.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Central Baptist Church in Axton, VA with the Rev. Billy Stegall officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Norris Funeral Services. At other times they will be at the residence.

Vance Lee Hudson
DANVILLE, Va. - Vance Lee Hudson, 85, of 331 Norwood Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 at the University of Virginia Medical Center after being in declining health for several weeks.
Born January 28, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Edward Hudson and Louvanna Collins Hudson.
He had lived in the Danville area for the last 20 years, and prior to his retirement worked for Associated Transport. He was a member of the Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a World War II veteran. He was married to Irene Carter Hudson, who predeceased him.
He is survived by one daughter, Vanglia Spears of Clearwater, FL; and one grandchild. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by three brothers, Clyde F. Hudson, Elwood S. Hudson and Wilton B. Hudson and a sister, Edna Ruth Hudson.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Jimmy Dexter Martin
CHATHAM, Va. - Jimmy Dexter Martin, 46,of 313 Concord Road, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002 at 50 Depot Street, Chatham. Born May 27, 1956, in New York, he was the son of James Martin and Dorothy Hodnett Martin.
He is survived by three brothers, John Martin and Larry W. Martin, both of Danville and Charles Robinson of Maryland.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday from the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home. Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Stella Deboe Mobley
DANVILLE, Va. - Stella Deboe Mobley, 81, of 568 Elizabeth Street Extension, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for two months and in the hospital since Nov. 30.
Born May 21, 1921,in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Haywood Cook, stepfather, and Hettie Deboe Cook. She was of the Baptist faith. She lived most of her life in Danville. She was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc., where she worked in No. 4 Gray as an inspector.
She married Garland Dove Mobley on October 12, 1940. He predeceased her Aug. 31, 2002. She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Rebecca Mobley, of the residence; one brother, Howard Hoskins of Halifax; three sisters, Neva H. Davis of Danville, Ruby C. Wilkerson of Colorado Springs, CO and Margie C. Marshall of Freemont, CA.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers and four sisters.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating.
The family will be at the residence.

Iris Terry
PELHAM, N.C. - Iris Terry, 66, of 946 Holland Road, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002 at the Brian Center in Yanceyville.
Born October 23, 1936, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Pearl Bassett Nunally Tapley and James Nunnally.
She is survived by two brothers, Solomon T. Nunnally Sr. and Harvey Lewis Bassett, both of Pelham; and two sisters, Mary Conyer of Danville and Barbara Mae Toney of Norfolk, VA.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Smith Chapel Baptist Church in Pelham with the Rev. Nathan Scovens officiating.
Interment will follow in the Floral Hills Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Master Samuel Whitfield III
DANVILLE, Va. - Master Samuel B. Whitfield III, affectionately known as "Lil Sammy", 1, of 1106 Wiley Avenue, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002 at the Danville Regional Medical Center Emergency Room.
Born July 5, 2001, in Danville, he was the son of Samuel B. Whitfield Jr. and Wanda Harris Whitfield, who both survive.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Davielle Johnson and Dakoyia Ross, both of Danville and Sharita Whitfield of New Rochelle, N.Y.; one brother, Donald Ross of Danville; and grandparents, Gloria and James Taylor of New Rochelle, N.Y. and Vanderbilt "Bill" Dawson of Wilson, N.C. and Margarita Whitfield of Mount Vernon, N.Y.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop John L. Morton officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

Bill Connock
DANVILLE, Va. - William Bourne "Bill" Connock, age 85, of 3560 Franklin Turnpike, Apt. 13, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, in the Stratford Health Care Center.
He was born in Danville on February 13, 1917, a son of John Lewis Connock and Estelle Bourne Connock.
On Aug. 9, 1938, he was married to Helen Lundie Connock, who survives.
He was retired from J.P. Stevens after 36 years and was North Carolina Safe Driver of the year.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy.
He was a life member of American Legion Post 325 and served as commander in 1989 and 1990. He was founder and commander of the Honor Guard for Post 325. He had served on various committees of Post 325 and was a member of the Morotock Masonic Lodge No. 210, the V.F.W. and was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, John Ray Connock; two sisters, Constance C. Perkinson and Sallie Mae Miller; one son-in-law, Donald L. Goss Sr.; and one grandson, Michael Todd Goss.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Bette C. Brown and Brenda C. Goss, both of Danville; seven grandchildren, Debra L. Noose, David L. Brown and his wife, Karen, Denise L. Van Valkenburg and her husband, Frank, Dwayne L. Brown, Donald L. Goss Jr. and his wife, Shelley, Christopher L. Goss and Susan Carol Goss; and six great grandchildren, Ashley Athey, Rachel Brown, Reid Brown, Kristen Goss, Jacob Goss and Frank Van Valkenburg V.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 from Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating. Full military honors will be given by American Legion Post 325. Masonic Rites will be given by Morotock Masonic Lodge No. 210.

Natalie Harris Coleman
DANVILLE, Va. - Natalie Harris Coleman, 66, of 2209 Halifax Road, Apt. 9, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at her residence.
Born July 15, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie Harris and Geraline Lee Harris.
She was employed by Dan River, Inc.
She was married to Charlie Coleman, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three daughters, Lou Ethel Harris, Diane Culley, both of Danville and Rosemary Hamm of Washington, D.C.; three sons, Ernest Coleman, Ricky Farmer and Kenneth Farmer, all of Danville; and two sisters, Delphine Cobbs of Danville and Barbara Broadnax of Baltimore, Md.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Chapel Baptist Church, Sutherlin, with the Rev. Floyd Standfield officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Frank Steven Haley
DANVILLE, Va. - Frank Steven Haley, 72, of 151 Doolittle St., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 31, 1930, in Danville, he was the son of John Haley and Ola Bray Haley.
He lived most of his life in Danville. He was a well-known welder employed on union jobs. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda and Debra; one son, Wayne Divine Haley of South Dakota; one sister, Bessie Adkinson; one brother, John Haley, both of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Roy Newton officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the home of Bessie Adkinson, 132 Fox St. and will also be there at other times.

Leary Millner Harper
DANVILLE, Va. - Leary Millner Harper, 104, of 139 Godfrey St., died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at her residence.
Born Aug. 21, 1898, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jessie Millner and Augusta Deering Millner.
She was a homemaker and member of Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
She was married to Samuel Harper Sr., who predeceased her.
She is survived by a son, Samuel Thornton of DeNora, Pa.; two daughters, Dorothy H. Terry of Chatham and Ola Mae Hood of Danville; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel with Elder Ronnie Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Glenn Holley
DANVILLE, Va. - J. Glenn Holley, 51, of 408 South Woodberry Avenue, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning at his home. He was born on September 27, 1951. He was raised in Pittsylvania County and moved to Danville after he married.
Glenn was a loving son to Linda Towler Holley Lence who passed away in July. He was a wonderful brother and best friend to his sister, Katie Holley Petrick.
On October 6, 1979, he married the former Gloria Ann Davis and she along with their three children, Lauren Grace, 18, Joshua Payne, 12, and Jacob Cameron, 10, considered him the light of their lives. He was a loving, wonderful and selfless husband and father. His footprints will forever be on all of our hearts.
Glenn will also be missed by his aunt and uncle, Phebe and Howard Brumfield and their children; his very bestest friends, Janis and David Puryear; his many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews and his lifelong friend, Dannie Adams.
A 1976 Graduate of VCU, he held degrees in Sociology, Psychology and Anthropology and did Graduate work at Hollins University. Glenn worked for over 27 years for Pittsylvania County, 16 as Director of Youth Services and 11 as the Director of the Data Processing Department.
He was a member of the Fresh Start Sunday School class at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church and Sunday School teacher at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 30, at 2:00 p.m. at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church with the Reverend Steve Carlton, a dear friend of Glenn and Gloria's, presiding. The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the service.

Dr. Jasper Lewis
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Dr. Jasper Phelps Lewis, beloved husband of Betty Laramore Lewis, entered into rest at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home on November 25, 2002.
He was the son of the late Joe and Ollie Lewis of Danville, Va. He is also survived by one sister, Josie M. Lewis of Danville, Va. and one nephew, Michael L. Hamilton of the Woodlands, Texas.
Dr. Lewis was a graduate of the University of Virginia, the University of Louisville Kentucky Medical School and the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta. He retired after 30 years as the research biochemist at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Augusta. Dr. Lewis was also a Professor of Research in the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia.
He was a member of the Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity and Sigma Xi and also a member of the North Augusta Country Club.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

GRETNA, Va. - Jeannie Short Murphy, 96, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Autumn Care Center of Altavista.
Born April 17, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Short and Martha Cox Short.
She was a member of Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Brumfield of Hurt; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Willie Brown Murphy; and a great-grandson, Chris Smith.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Raymond Goad officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
