Janie B. Barbour

JAVA, Va. - Janie B. Barbour, 65, of 509 McDaniel Road, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at her residence.

Born Feb. 19, 1937, in Pittsylvania Co., she was a daughter of John Henry Anderson and Mary Sue Adams Anderson.

She was a member of the Riceville Baptist Church and the gospel chorus.

In addition to her husband, Robert Lee Barbour, of the residence, she is survived by four daughters, Castella Jones of Chester, Pa., Odester Miller of Java, Mary Alice Barbour of Hurt, and Ronnie Barbour of Danville; four sons, Frankie Barksdale, Earnest Barbour and Howard Barbour, all of Java, and Alexander Barbour of Dublin, Va.; one sister, Hassie Mae Hodnett of Gretna; six half sisters; two half brothers; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margery Pettus Brandon

KEYSVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Margery Pettus Brandon, age 83, of 861 King St., Keysville, Va., departed this life to reside with her heavenly father on Monday, Nov. 25, 2002. She was the loving devoted wife of the late William Smith Brandon, formerly of Milton, N.C.

Mrs. Brandon was the daughter of the late Louis Vaughan Pettus and Phoebe Lee of Keysville, Va. She was preceded in death by a younger brother, Louis V. Pettus Jr.

Surviving are two sons, William Smith Brandon Jr. of Yanceyville, N.C. and Lee Pettus Brandon of High Point, N.C.; three grandsons, Vaughan and Scott Brandon of Yanceyville, N.C. and Matthew Vincent Brandon of Greensboro, N.C.; one granddaughter, Mrs. Michael Carlise of High Point, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery, Keysville, Va. with the Rev. Ted Smith and her long remaining retired Minister the Rev. Coan Agee will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the Browning Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, please consider the Charlotte County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 330, Keysville, VA 23947 or the Gideon International Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1411, Yanceyville, NC 27379.

Orey Kent Davis

VERNON HILL, Va. - Orey Kent Davis, 73, of 2126 Ridge Rd., died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 3, 1929, in Halifax County, he was the son of Norman S. Davis and Beatrice Shaw Davis, who survives.

He was a member of the Woodmen of the World.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Thelma Daniel Davis of Vernon Hill; two daughters, Deborah Kay Esquivel of Halifax and Sheila Hope Davis of Vernon Hill; one son, Earl Kent "Bookie" Davis of Chesapeake; two sisters, Earlene Dodson and Shirley Ann Linens, both of Danville; one brother, Frank Davis of Java; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dave Kilpatrick officiating. Interment will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens with Woodmen of the World rites.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Willie Elmore Fitzgerald

RINGGOLD, Va. - Willie Elmore Fitzgerald, 95, of 1757 Ringgold Depot Road, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 14, 1907 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Walter Fitzgerald and Nancy Adams Fitzgerald.

Prior to his retirement, he worked as a farmer and also at Swicegood Funeral Home for numerous years.

He was married to Julia Fitzgerald, who survives. In addition, he is survived by two daughters, Barbara Williams of Ringgold and Annie Mae Davis of Washington, D.C. and two sons, James Saunders of Ringgold and Clarence Saunders of Dry Fork.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Graves officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Signora Griffith Gentry

DANVILLE, Va. - Signora Griffith Gentry, 87, formerly of 117 Martin Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston, Va.

Born Nov. 1, 1915, in Danville, she was the daughter of Charles Venable Griffith and Anne Miller Griffith.

She was a retired nurse, having worked for 30 years in Danville Memorial Hospital. She also worked for years at Roman Eagle Nursing Home. She was a member of the Retiree's Club of Danville Memorial Hospital and American Legion Post #325 Ladies Auxiliary.

She was married to Frank Gentry, who predeceased her in 1987.

Survivors include two sons, Paul Allan Gentry of Danville and Charles Edward Gentry of Eagle Rock; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park with Silas Seamster Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times will be at the son's residence, 118 Skylark Ct.

The family suggests that memorials be sent to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

Robert W. Huckabee

DANVILLE, Va. - Robert W. Huckabee, age 89, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born on March 14, 1913, in Idabell, Okla., he was the son of William Huckabee and Elizabeth Cornelias Huckabee.

He owned and operated a farm. He was a member of West Main Baptist Church.

He was married to Alice E. Huckabee, who survives. He is also survived by a son, Malcolm Huckabee of Danville; two brothers, Charles Huckabee of Bruster, Wash. and Cecil Huckabee of Goddey, Texas; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Laquita Kirkland and a son, Ronald Lee Huckabee.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at West Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the son's residence, 121 Ginger Drive.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Danville Mental Health-Alzheimer's Support Groups.

Elder Mother Minnie Jones

CHATHAM, Va. - Elder Mother Minnie Jones, 78, of 689 North Main St., died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at her residence.

Born June 26, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Mack Miller and Josephine Coles Miller.

She was a homemaker and a member of New True Vine Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She is survived by her husband, Bishop Theodore R. Jones Sr. of the residence; five sons, Elder Theodore R. Jones Jr., Phillip C. Jones, David W. Jones, all of Chatham, Randolph S. Jones of Keeling and Mark Jones of Mecklenburg; five daughters, Gladys Turner, Nancy P. Edmunds, Jean Clark, all of Danville, Mary A. Jones and Jacqueline Jones, both of Chatham; three brothers, Hugh Miller of Washington, D.C., Raymond Miller of Chicago, Ill. and Lacon Miller of Oakland, Calif.; 26 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ida Logan and three brothers, Lawson, Reese and Charlie Mack Miller.

The funeral will be held at noon Saturday at New True Vine Pentecostal Holiness Church with Elder Theodore R. Jones Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in New Jerusalem Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, Java.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at New True Vine Pentecostal Church and at other times at the residence.

Kurt Jacob Kung

SWITZERLAND - Kurt Jacob Kung, 78, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002.

Born April 7, 1924, in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, he was the son of Oscar and Emma Kung.

He lived most of his life in Switzerland employed as a textile consultant.

He had lived in Danville, Va. during the 1960s while working as an engineer for Dan River, Inc.

He was predeceased by one son, Wayne George Kueng.

Survivors include a wife, Doris, and stepdaughter, Gabi, of the residence; one brother, Oscar Kung and one sister, Dorli Kung, both of Switzerland, two sons, Kurt Kueng and Robbie Kueng, both of Danville; two daughters, Kathy K. Koplen and Barbie K. Franklin, both of the Outer Banks, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

The funeral service was held on Nov. 15, 2002, in Switzerland.

Mary Louise Litten

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Louise Litten, of 334 Maple Grove Ave., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1919, in Keyser, W.Va., she was the daughter of Horace and Mary Emma Menefee.

She was a mother and homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Florence, Ala.

She is survived by five children, Margo Judy of Danville, Tinker Burkhardt of Hurt, Lee Roy Litten II of Greensboro, N.C., Michael Litten of Brandon, Fla. and Frances G. Clark of Harrisonburg.

She was predeceased by a daughter, LeeAnn Polantz and two brothers, William G. Menefee and Horace F. Menefee.

The funeral was Nov. 7 at Greenville Memorial Gardens in Florence, Ala. The Rev. Leonard McDowell officiated.

A celebration of her life will be held 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the residence of Charles and Margo Judy, 334 Maple Grove Ave.

Joe K. Lovelace

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Joe K. Lovelace, 77, of 1905 Florida Ave., died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born Aug. 3, 1925, he was the son of Mansfield Lovelace and Thelma Robertson Lovelace.

He was a retired employee of O.S. Shortt Company and was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board.

He was first married to Ethel Lovelace, who predeceased him. He then married Dorothy Lovelace.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Brown of Altavista; a son, Kenneth Lovelace of Hurt; a brother, James Lovelace of Hurt; and four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Fred Lovelace; and three sisters, Bessie Delooth, Bernice Rose and Alberta Morton.

The funeral will be held at noon Friday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Hurt, with the Rev. Timothy Walker officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, Kenneth Lovelace, 1000 Delta Drive, Hurt.

Hampton Lee Martin, Jr.

MAMARONECK, N.Y. - Hampton "Spud" Lee Martin Jr., 54, of 156 West Boston Post Road, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in New York.

Born Oct. 19, 1948, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Hampton Martin Sr. and Ruth R. Martin.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Airborne Infantry. He was a retired culinary artist from United Hospital in Portchester and he also was a self-employed painter.

He joined the Piney Grove Baptist Church at an early age and after moving to New York he attended the First Baptist Church in Spring Valley.

He was preceded in death by one brother, William Sherman Martin, paternal grandparents, Charlie and Missy Martin, a maternal grandmother, Louise Ross Barksdale and a maternal grandfather, William Ross.

In addition to his parents of Gretna, Va., he is survived by one son, Hampton Lee Martin III; one daughter, Courtney Martin of Teaneck, N.J.; four brothers, Charles Martin of Chestnut Ridge, N.Y., Mark Martin of Las Vegas, Nev., Paul Martin and the Rev. Phillip Martin, both of Greensboro, N.C.; and two sisters, Patricia Marze of Chestnut Ridge, N.Y. and Carolyn Pritchett of Blairs, Va.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phillip Martin and the Rev. Issac Monroe officiating. Interment will follow in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will be at the residence of his parents, 3321 West Gretna Road, Gretna, Va.

Hazel Weeks Parker

DANVILLE, Va. - Hazel Weeks Parker, 85, formerly of 98 Schoolfield Drive, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.

Born Nov. 26, 1917, in Danville, she was the daughter of Jackson Weeks and Nannie Weeks.

She was employed at Dan River Mills and was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.

She was married to Clarence William Parker, who predeceased her June 3, 1990.

She is survived by one niece, Stella Johnson of Maryland.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Bobby Lee Parker and Arthur Parker.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. David Turbyfill officiating.

Hans Henry Pieper

JAVA, Va. - Hans Henry Pieper, 80, of 2492 Elkhorn Road, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 15, 1922, in Oldenburg, Germany, he was a son of Herman H. Pieper and Sophia Wiechmann Wulf.

He was a retired employee of the Custom Alloy Corporation, Califon, N.J.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Pieper of the residence; three sons, Robert Pieper of Lexington, N.C., John Pieper of Gretna and Kevin Pieper of Washington, N.J.; three daughters, Ann Bauer of Bloomsbury, N.J., Karen Gares and Cindy Pieper, both of Phillipsburg, N.J.; two half brothers, Alfred Wulf and Henry Wulf, both of Hackettstown, N.J.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Bert Johnson officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or 640 Rescue Squad.
