Edna Chilton Pugh
DANVILLE, Va. - Edna Chilton Pugh, 75, formerly of 178 Cumberland Drive, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 18, 1927, in Danville, she was the daughter of James T. Chilton and Bessie Axom Chilton.
She lived all of her life in Danville and was a member of Riveroak Church of God. She had been a patient at Roman Eagle Memorial Home since October 2000.
She was married to Walter Allen Pugh, who predeceased her June 5, 1999.
She is survived by two sons, Walter A. "Buddy" Pugh Jr. of Danville and James S. Pugh of Waverly; a daughter, Susie P. Irby of Danville; a sister, Doris Arnold of Florida; three brothers, Glen Chilton, Ted Chilton and Robert Chilton, all of Danville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Roger L. Ewing officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at her former residence.

William Rudson Purnell, Sr.
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - William Rudson Purnell, Sr., 79, of 132 Charlie Fowlkes Jr. Rd., died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002 at the Brian Center, Yanceyville, N.C.
Born Feb. 22, 1923, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of William David Purnell and Julia Taylor Purnell.
He was employed for 20 years with J.W. Squire and later retired from Quality Construction. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of Community Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, Novella Roach Purnell, he is survived by two daughters, Sybil P. Williams of Dry Fork and Cindy P. Hamlett of Providence; one son, William R. Purnell, Jr. of Yanceyville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. James Albert officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Thursday at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C.

Faye Wells Soyars
DANVILLE, Va. - Faye Wells Soyars, 75, formerly of 9785 Martinsville Hwy., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 5, 1927, in Danville, she was the daughter of Roy James Wells and Lillian Miller Wells.
Mrs. Soyars lived all of her life in the Danville area and was a sales clerk with W.T. Grant Company, which was located in Riverside Shopping Center. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
She had been in declining health for the past two years. She lived with her daughter, Salene, for one and a half years. She was in the hospital for the past two weeks.
She was married to Robert Ford Soyars.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Brenda O. Cochrane of Hilliard, Fla. and Salene Justice of Danville; a stepson, Douglas Soyars of Danville; a stepdaughter, Kathy Inman of Danville; three grandchildren, Anthony Cochrane, Wendy Cochrane and Neal Cochrane III; four great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Billy Soyars officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Ulean Torain
CHATHAM, Va. - Ulean Torain, 55, of 5905 Strawberry Road, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 2, 1947, she was the daughter of William McKenzie and Nannie Kate Inge McKenzie.
She was a retired employee of the Pittsylvania County School System, where she served as a teacher's aide. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and served on the kitchen committee.
She was married to William Torain, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two daughters, Teresa Torain and Valerie Torain, both of Chatham; a son, William A. Good Jr. of Richmond; four sisters, Lena Tarpley, Mabel Motley, Cornell Fitzgerald, all of Chatham and Frances Goode of Danville; a brother, William McKenzie; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Damon Hairston officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Olyer Wagoner Turner
DANVILLE, Va. - Olyer Wagoner Turner, 93, formerly of Rte. 1, Box 1422 in the Brosville Community, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at the Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born March 28, 1909, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Jennie Wagoner Leffue.
She was a member of Peoples Church of the Living God in Bassett. She lived most of her life in Franklin County and moved to the Brosville community in 1989. She and her husband owned and operated Turner Grocery Store in Bassett Heights.
She was predeceased by her husband, John M. Turner, who died in 1962.
She is survived by three daughters, Irene Hall Mitchell of Baltimore, Md., Martha Turner Hyler of Brosville and Mary Turner of Carolina Beach, N.C.; three sons, Edgar Mitchell Turner of Martinsville, Joseph D. Turner of Bachelor's Hall and David Turner, Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Sara Hurt of North Carolina; 26 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Cassie Newcomb Jones and Christine Lewis.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jasper Wagoner and the Rev. Bud Nichols officiating. Interment will be in Shady Rest Cemetery, Bassett.

Barbara Daniel
BLANCH, N.C. - Barbara "Bobbie" Goodson Daniel, 67, of 2765 County Home Road, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at the residence, following several months of declining health.
Born May 29, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Hazel Sykes Goodson of Yanceyville, who survives, and John Wesley Goodson, who predeceased her Aug. 11, 1976.
She was married to Edward Otis Daniel Jr. of Yanceyville, who survives. She was a graduate of Cobb Memorial School and attended Averett College. She retired from Caswell County Social Services and was a member of Purley United Methodist Church where she was a pianist for 31 years. She was active with the Methodist Women and was a member of ABWA and VFW Women's Auxiliary.
Survivors include one daughter, Ellen D. Pleasant of Prospect Hill; three sons, Michael E. Daniel of Sweden, Wesley L. Daniel of Cedar Grove, and Joel C. Daniel of Blanch; two brothers, John Thomas Goodson of Charlotte, and Danny Joe Goodson of Easley, S.C.; and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Purley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jaylynn Byassee officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Harrelson Funeral Home in Yanceyville and other times will be at the residence.

Nellie Devine
DANVILLE, Va. - Nellie Inman Devine, 68, of 1647 Maple Drive, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 23, 1934 in Danville, she was a daughter of William Henry Inman and Mary Eunice McVey Inman.
She was married to Joseph Devine, who predeceased her. She was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church and had been in declining health for the past five years. She formerly lived at Outlook Point and worked at Home Health Care as a sitter.
Survivors include one daughter, Glenda O. Carsone of Danville; two sons, Wayne Inman of Lynchburg and Curtis Inman of Brosville; one sister, Choloe Eanes of Brosville; two brothers, the Rev. Hubert E. Inman of Pelham, N.C. and Phillip Inman of Brosville; and seven grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one daughter, Janice Kay Yearty, and three brothers, William Inman, Vincent Inman, and Julian Inman.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Scarce-Inman Family Cemetery in Whitmell with the Rev. Hubert Inman officiating.

Helene "Bumps" Starr Lemons
DANVILLE, Va. - Helene Starr Lemons, 85, of 167 Godfrey Street, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was born April 19, 1917, in Danville, she was the daughter of Edgar Avery Starr and Jeanette Hanks Starr. Her sisters Thelma Starr, Jewel Starr Matthews and Dympress Starr Wooldridge all preceded her in death.
A Danville native and longtime resident of the Monroe Street area, she attended George Washington High School where she enjoyed history and cheerleading. She was married September 4, 1934, to John Carroll Lemons, Sr. who preceded her in death. After living in twenty-eight states, she returned to this area where she devoted her life to raising three granddaughters. As a lifelong animal lover, she was loving caregiver to hundreds of cats. Throughout her life, she remained passionate about roller skating, dancing, music, animals and bingo.
Survivors include three granddaughters, Kimberly Lemons Snowdy, Eden, North Carolina, Kelly Lemons Brown and Katherine Ann Lemons, both of Danville, Virginia; two sons, Rodney Matthew Lemons of Ridgeway, Virginia and John "Booie" Lemons of Daytona, Florida; one niece, Patricia Wooldridge Blume of Baltimore, Maryland; two grandsons-in-law, Ronnie Snowdy and William Brown; one future grandson-in-law, Shane Stoyer; devoted family of friends; and nineteen cats.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at 7 P.M. from The Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel.

DANVILLE, Va. - Carolyn Harvey Porter, 62, of 937 N. Main Street, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at the residence.
Born April 16, 1940 in Danville, she was a daughter of James Oakey Harvey and Iva Stephens Harvey.
Survivors include one son, Calvin Porter of Danville; two daughters, Melissa P. Martin and Beverly Porter, both of Danville; two brothers, Calvin W. Harvey of New Jersey and Ralph Harvey of Danville; one sister, Velma Barbour of Danville; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one brother, Melvin Harvey and one sister, June Rembold.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Johnson Porter, 88, of 103 Hayes Court in the Westover Hills Community, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 8, 1913 in Winside, Neb., she was a daughter of Robert H. Johnson and Anna Sophie Johnson Johnson.
She was married on May 28, 1937 to Arnold Brown Porter, who survives. She attended Fairview United Methodist Church and was retired from Dan River Inc.
She is survived, in addition to her husband of the residence, by one sister, Bernice Philby of Danville.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two brothers, Milton R. Johnson and Clarence Johnson.
A graveside service was held 3 p.m. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Linwood Daniel officiating.

Elsie Farthing Wells
DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Farthing Wells, 77, of 206 Meadowbrook Drive, died May 25, 2002 in Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for over four years and had been in Roman Eagle for seven months.
Born January 23, 1925 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Jim Parrish Farthing and the late Edna Gourley Farthing.
She was married November 18, 1944 to John A. Wells, who predeceased her on June 19, 1994. Mrs. Wells had lived most of her life in Danville where she had retired from Dan River Inc. as a Sheet Hemmer in the #5 Sewing Room of the Schoolfield Division after 41 years of service. She was an active member of Keen Street Baptist Church and a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class as long as her health permitted.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley W. Collins and her husband, Melvin James Collins of the residence; two sisters, Empress F. Richardson of Danville, and Nina F. Yeager of Dothan, Ala.; one granddaughter, Priscilla C. Harris, and her husband Randy E. Harris of Ringgold; and two great-grandchildren, Casey and Zachary Harris, both of Ringgold.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002 at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Revs. Thomas Brown, George Rumney and Steve Carlton officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

DANVILLE, Va. - Judy Cousins Dalton, of 153 Dunmore Avenue, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at her residence after four years in declining health.
Born Sept. 14, 1948, in the Callands community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George H. Cousins Sr. and Mildred Horsley Cousins.
She graduated from Chatham High School and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Callands.
In addition to her parents of Callands, she is survived by her husband, Randy L. Dalton of the residence; a daughter, Kristy Dalton of the residence; a son, Kenneth Motley of Apex, N.C.; a brother, George H. Cousins, Jr. of Danville; and a sister, Joan Wood of Danville.

VERNON HILL, Va. - Felix Lonnie Ferguson, 90, of 2034 Ridge Road, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born June 23, 1912, in Halifax County, he was the son of Lonnie B. Ferguson and Kate Chaney Ferguson.
He was married to Ellen Henderson Ferguson, who predeceased him. He was a member of Oak Level Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by one son, Wayne Ferguson of Vernon Hill; one sister, Lena F. Toombs of Halifax; one grandchild, Charles Ferguson of Vernon Hill; and two great-grandchildren, Travis Wayne Ferguson and Joshua Grey Ferguson, both of Vernon Hill.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Louise F. Moore and Frances F. Henderson.
