Lonnie Ray Woodall
BASSETT, Va. - Lonnie Ray Woodall, 54, of Westover Drive, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County.
Born Nov. 27, 1947, in Martinsville, He was the son of Bobby Ray Woodall and Myrtle Handy Woodall.
He was married to Sandra Clark Woodall. He was the owner of Woodall's Music. He graduated from Bassett High School and Bluefield College, served in National Guards and was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He played with numerous local and national bands from his early teens to present including Gene and the Team Beats, City Council, The Rogues, Foxx and Company, Percy Sledge and the Blues Defenders. He was instrumental in establishing Harrison Scales Young Musicians Foundation and worked with Bassett High School Jazz Band.
Survivors include his wife of the residence; one daughter, Jaime Reah Woodall of the residence; one son, Lonnie Jacob Woodall of the residence; parents of Bassett; sisters, Opaline Elizabeth Spencer of Martinsville, and Carolyn Woodall Davis of Roanoke; and one brother, Lewis A. Woodall of New Castle.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Ramsey, the Rev. James Alsop, the Rev. Rickie Fox, Ken Hundley and Brittany Martens officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuedsay at Hillcrest Baptist Church.

Ernest Anderson
RALEIGH, N.C. - Ernest Gilbert Anderson Sr., 81, formerly of Raleigh, died Thursday at the N.C. State Veterans Nursing Home in Fayetteville. Mr. Anderson was the owner and manager of Andy's Produce at the State Farmers Market. He was born in Pittsylvania County, Va. on January 1, 1921 to the late Charles H. and Lena Lewis Anderson. Mr. Anderson was a veteran serving his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie Williams Anderson. Surviving are his two sons, E. Gilbert Anderson Jr. of Raleigh and Dean Anderson of Providence, N.C.; two daughters, Sandra A. McArtor and husband Chris of Boyce, Va. and Donna A. McNeal and husband Greg of Raleigh; four sisters, Mildred Boles, Clara Moser, Elizabeth Heffinger and Jeanette Brown, all of Va.; four grandchildren, Travis and Chelsea McNeal, Troy McArtor and Rachael Anderson.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Millbrook Road. Interment will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

W. Ewell Barr
DANVILLE, Va. - William Ewell Barr, 72, of 233 Mount Vernon Ave., died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 21, 1929, in Danville, he was the son of Ewell White Barr and Mabel Rogers Barr.
He was married Nov. 24, 1961, to Lamar Goodykoontz Barr, who survives. He was educated in Danville Public Schools and was a 1947 graduate of George Washington High School. He was a 1951 graduate of the University of Virginia and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1958. He was a partner in the law firm of Rogers and Barr for a number of years before becoming assistant commonwealth attorney. He later served as city attorney for the city of Danville until he retired in 1987. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was a member of the German Club and very active in the Roanoke River Basin Association and was past president. He was also a former member of the Sertoma Club and Danville Jaycees.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, William E. Barr of Greenville, S.C., and Robert R. Barr of Miami, Fla.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Northen and Dr. Joey Faucette officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Edith Clayborn
MILTON, N.C. - Edith Clayborn, 88, of 3178 Yarbrough Mill Road, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at the Roxboro Nursing Center.
Born Jan. 25, 1914 in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Alexander Lewis and Alice Jeffers Lewis.
She was married to Algie Clayborn, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three daughters, Cora Crutchfield and Juanita Withers, both of Milton and Mable Clayborn of Mount Ranier, Md.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at River Zion Baptist Church in Blanche with Bishop Arthur Linder officiating. Interment will follow at New Zion Baptist Church in Milton.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Juanita Withers, 10073 North Carolina Highway 62 North in Milton.

Wallace Hall Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Wallace Vann Hall, Sr., age 84, of 191 Fairmont Circle, Danville, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Danville, Virginia on July 15, 1917 a son of Luther T. Hall and Lillie M. Hall.
He was married on July 15, 1951 to Mary Lou Cooke Hall, who survives of the home.
He was a 50 year veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was in active duty during World War II, having six invasion battle stars in both Atlantic and Pacific. His rank was commander USNR.
He was a graduate of George Washington High School and also a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
He was a managerial partner in R.L. Hall Motors in Danville. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club, Yanceyville, N.C. and a member of the Danville Exchange Club. He was also a former president of the Danville New Car Dealers Association.
He was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church where he had been Treasurer for over 16 years and Chairman of the Official Board.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Randolph L. Hall and Kenneth T. Hall, and one sister, Hilma H. Garrett.
Survivors include his wife, one son, W. Vann Hall, Jr. of San Francisco, CA, one daughter, Sarah Lou Kaufman and son-in-law, Robert G. Kaufman, II both of Durham, N.C., one grandson, "Trey" Kaufman of Durham, N.C., sister, Juanita Easley and her husband James of Danville, nieces and nephews, Carol Garrett, Jim and John Easley, Kay Crawford, Kenneth Hall III, and Randolph Hall, Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Milstead and Rev. Rebecca Yow.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park with Military Graveside Honors being given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 1097.
The family received friends on Thursday night at Townes Funeral Home from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

David Hunt
RALEIGH, N.C. - David Marcus Hunt, 49, formerly of Raleigh, died at his home on May 27, 2002 in Charleston, S.C.
Marc was born in Richmond, VA., on September 10, 1952. Educated in public schools in Virginia and North Carolina, he earned his B.S. degree in Environmental Science from East Carolina University in 1974, and his M.S. in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. Marc's distinguished career as an industrial hygenist included service both in the military and civilian arenas. He retired as Captain from the United States Naval Reserves after the Gulf War in 1993. As a civilian Marc worked for several environmental firms in the Triangle and Charleston areas. Most recently he was a professor in the department of Environmental Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Gentle, kind to all, Marc was an intensely private person, yet as a world traveler he accumulated a wealth of experience - being launched from an aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean, SCUBA diving in the Bay of Naples - that few people would achieve in twice his time on earth.
At home and abroad, Marc touched the lives of many people both in a professional and personal capacity. He took great pride in his work, and he loved his family, friends, and his home on Wappoo Cut deeply. Marc, in turn, was loved by his many friends, who, along with his family, grieve his loss.
Marc is survived by his parents, M. Dana and Hazel Hunt of Danville, VA; his brother, Marvin, and sister-in-law Robin of Durham; his nephew John Miles Hunt and niece Alexandra Outland Hunt. His grandparents, Avery and Thelma Wall, as well as his beloved dog, Patience, preceded him in death.
Marc's life will be celebrated at Main Street United Methodist Church in Danville on Saturday, June 22, at 11 a.m.
Robert Russell Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Russell Jones, 84, of 120 Old Piney Forest Road Lot #14, died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at his residence. He had been in declining health for two years.
Born May 23, 1918 in Dry Fork, he was a son of Robert G. Jones and Cora Yeatts Jones.
He was married to Daisy Jones Jones, who predeceased him. He lived in Pico, Calif. where he had worked for a merchandising firm as a truck driver. He retired to Boulder Springs, Nev. and moved to Danville 10 years ago. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Italian theater.
He is survived by two sisters, Ruby C. Jones and Zelma J. Gilbert, both of Danville; and one brother, Ray Yeatts Jones of Norfolk.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Revs. Henry Taylor and Ira Yeatts officiating. Interment will be private and will be held at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of his sister, Ruby Jones, 1649 North Main Street.

Doris Marks
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Doris Puryear Marks, 64, of 2300 Heron Hill Place, died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born November 6, 1937 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Wilson Peyton Puryear and Mary Wilborn Puryear.
She was married to Bernard "Bunny" Marks, who survives. She was a member of Peakland United Methodist Church and Oakwood Country Club. She was a homemaker and a former teacher in Florida, California and Pennsylvania. She was a charter member of the Hospital Auxilliary in Lock Haven, Pa., and served as president of the Women's Golf Association at Clinton Country Club. She was a graduate of Halifax County High School, attended Mars Hill College and received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Longwood College.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Lynchburg, include one son, Lt. D. Wilson Marks of the United States Navy; two sisters, Nell P. Hudson of Virgilina and Betty P. Caldwell of South Boston; four brothers, J.T. Puryear of Virgilina, Phil Puryear of South Boston, and Lindy Puryear and Jerry Puryear, both of Roxboro, N.C.; and one granddaughter.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at North Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert M. Fox Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Freddie Lee McCullor, 72, of 626 Monroe Street, died Monday, June 17, 2002 at Piney Forest Nursing Home.
Born November 2, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Otis McCullor and Alice McCullor Walton.
He was married to Louise P. McCullor, who predeceased him. He was retired from the City of Danville Public Works Department.
He is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Robertson, Dianne McCullor and Sallie Long, all of Danville; and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by two brothers, Lester McCullor and James McCullor and one sister, Loveline Sydnor.
The funeral will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Albert Toney officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

Mary McDermott
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Corron George McDermott, 86, of Riverside Health Care Center, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 6, 1915, in Cowen, W.Va., she was the daughter of George Corron and Anna Shaver Corron.
She was first married to E.M. George, who predeceased her in 1964, and later married Terrance McDermott, who predeceased her in 1980.
Survivors include one son, David George of Danville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Daniel George.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Riverview Cemetery in Ronceverte, W.Va.
The family will be at the residence of her son, 423 Wheatley Road in Danville.

Eloise McKenzie
PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Eloise Summers McKenzie of Pilot Mountain, died Thursday, June 20, 2002.
Born January 10, 1921 in Mooresville, N.C., she was a daughter of William Franklin and Estelle Honeycutt Summers.
She was married to John C. McKenzie Sr., who predeceased her. She graduated from Mooresville High School and attended Kings Business College in Raleigh. She was a homemaker and a member of First Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for over 40 years. She was an avid golfer at Pilot Knob Park and also played at Pebble Beach and in Palm Springs. She had lived in Pilot Mountain since 1950 .
She is survived by four children, Pat Harper of Brandon, Miss., Lee Cederquist of Charlotte, John McKenzie Jr. of Pilot Mountain and Teta Angel of Cascade; two brothers, Bill Summers of Wilmington and Bob Summers of Concord; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one sister, Virginia Settlemeyer.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First Methodist Church with the Rev. David Wyant officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

CHATHAM, Va. - Evelyn Yeatts Oakes, 82, of 1453 Chalk Level Road, died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at her residence.
Born August 5, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walter Yeatts and Minnie Colbert Yeatts.
She was married to William Turner Oakes, who survives. She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include two sons, Henry Glenn Oakes of Chatham and Darrell Wayne Oakes of Blairs; one sister, Erma Yeatts Murphy; and one grandson.
She was predeceased by one brother, Holsie Yeatts.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mill Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. James Bullock Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Lillian Routon
SPOUT SPRING, Va. - Lillian Lerner Routon, 92, of Route 2, died Thursday morning, June 20, 2002 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of the late Wilton M. Routon Sr.
Born in Campbell County, September 25, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Albert Francis and Sallie Goff Lerner. Mrs. Routon was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church and the Stonewall Home Demonstration Club.
She is survived by a son, W. Murrell Routon, Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Gretna; three daughters and their husbands, Marie and Curtis Wooten, Spout Spring, Kathryn "Kitty" and Lloyd Gunter, Concord, Betty and Fred Jones, Appomattox; her sister, Mrs. Otis (Elva L.) Simms, Lynchburg; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; three devoted and loving caregivers, Barbara Hunter, Barbara Campbell and Judy Mays.
Two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
The Rev. Millard Stimpson and Rev. Victor Nas will conduct funeral services at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 22, 2002 at Robinson Funeral Home with burial following in Liberty Cemetery.
