Harry Hoover
DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Hubert Hoover, of 310 Westview Drive, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at the Riverside Health Care Center where he had been a resident for the past 22 months. He had been in declining health for the past year.
Born Aug. 19, 1918, in Clemmons, N.C., he was the son of Hugh Elias Hoover and Annie Combs Hoover.
He was married to Mary Tate Hoover, who survives. He was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was retired from Disston Inc. and was the last remaining member of his immediate family.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Harry Thomas Hoover of Asheboro, N.C., and William Hugh Hoover of Cedar Grove, N.C.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Design United Methodist Churchy by the Rev. Thomas Shepherd. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.

Louis Johns
DANVILLE, Va. - Louis LeRoy "Jim" Johns Sr., 74, of 249 Cleveland Street, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born December 14, 1927 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James "Jim" Johns and Geneva Jennings Johns.
He was married to Nannie F. Johns, who survives, and was an usher for East New Hope Baptist Church. He was a supervisor at Dibrell Brothers Inc.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three daughters, Patricia Johns Saunders, Sharon Stevenson and Angela Stevenson, all of Danville; three sons, Barry Stevenson, Donald Stevenson and Larry Stevenson, all of Danville; five sisters, Elsie Johns Williams of Washington D.C., and Rosetta J. Ferguson, Edith J. Dallas, Sarah J. Elliott, and Judy Thomas, all of Danville; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by three sons, Tony Johns, LeRoy Johns Jr. and Kenny Johns.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at East New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerome B. Morris officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence.

James Lacks
HALIFAX, Va. - James Earl Lacks Sr., 66, of 1005 Halls Trail, died May 15, 2002 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 25, 1936 in Halifax County, he was a son of Frank Earl Lacks and Gracie Elliott Lacks.
He was married to Betty Dixon Lacks, who survives, and was a member of Halifax Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Halifax, include two sons, James Lacks and Tony Michael Lacks, both of Halifax; three daughters, Jean Hodge of South Boston, Cindy Ann Lacks of Halifax, and Sherry Robertson of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. W.D. Mills officiating. Interment will follow at Halifax Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jesse Lunsford Jr.
MADISON, Tenn. - Jesse Arnold (Jay/Jess) Lunsford, Jr., 42, formerly of Durham, N.C. died May 6, 2002 at his residence in Madison, Tenn.
He was born August 5, 1959, in Durham, N.C., the son of Jesse A. Lunsford, Sr. and Irene Blalock Lunsford.
He was a songwriter, musician.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse A. Lunsford, Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Irene Blalock Lunsford of Yanceyville, N.C.; two sisters, Patricia Toler and husband, John of Princeton, N.C., and Nancy Adcox and husband, Stephen of Raleigh, N.C.; niece Terese Suzanne Messick of Raleigh, N.C., and nephew, Jonathan Aaron Toler of Princeton, N.C.
Jay was a beloved son and brother. His loving spirit and his music made everyone's life much richer.
The family is at the home of Irene Lunsford, 1555 Hwy. 158 West, Yanceyville, N.C.
Visitation will be Saturday from 1:00-2:30 p.m. at Marley Funeral Home.
The graveside service will be held the same day at 3 p.m. at Blalock Family cemetery in Prospect Hill, N.C. with the Pastor David Powell officiating.

Clarice McDaniel
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarice Gilbert McDaniel, 93, of 183 Beech Ave., died Thursday, May 16, 2002 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born December 4, 1908 in Stuart, she was the daughter of Clee Ophus Gilbert and Mary Ida Handy Gilbert.
She was married first to Harold Lee Shumate, who predeceased her in 1958, and then married to George W. McDaniel, who predeceased her in 1972. She worked at Dan River Mills in the No. 5 Inspection Room for 45 years. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, Westover Senior Fellowship, Dan River Retired Workers Club and Senior Citizen Club.
Survivors include three sons, Glynn Odell Shumate and Melvin Gilbert Shumate, both of Danville, and Garland Lee Shumate of Blairs; one brother, William M. "Bill" Gilbert of Martinsville; three sisters, Ruth Gilbert Gilbert of Stuart, Mildred Gilbert DeHart of Danville and Helen Gilbert Spencer of Lawsonville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by three sisters, Grace Gilbert Boyd, Virginia Gilbert Barton and Irene Gilbert Shumate.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Chapel with the Revs. Tom Bernard and Michael Wiles officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Annette Clark Powell, 55, of 8 Pence Court, died Thursday, May 16, 2002 at Wesley Long Hospital.
She was married to Gary Powell, who survives, and was a teller at First Union Bank and attended Palm Street Christian Church. She was a native of Danville, Va.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include her children, Charles Lee Powell, Kevin William Powell and Kristy Lynn Powell, all of the residence; two brothers, Calvin Clark of Petersburg, Va. and Larry Clark of Danville, Va.; five sisters, Arlene Pickerel, Thelma Gleber, Joyce Ladd and June Burnett, all of Danville, Va. and Addie Sticher of LaGrange, Ga.

Clara Rigney
AXTON, Va. - Clara Scarce Rigney, 77, of 6909 Medical Center Road, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 21, 1924, in the Whitmell community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Henry Scarce and Ella Tate Scarce.
She was married to Edward Swanny Rigney, who predeceased her.
She lived in the Axton community for the past 50 years and was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church. She was employed at Hooker Furniture Company for 18 years. She had been in declining health since 1985 and had been in the hospital for two days.
Survivors include six daughters, Ella Riddle of Axton, Nancy Heath of Chatham, Shirley Eanes of the residence, Linda Barbour of Callands, Deloris Hankins of Axton, and Mary Mays of the residence; three sons, Edward Neal Rigney of Bassett, Tommy Lee Rigney of Alabama, and Gary Rigney of Axton; one sister, Marie Scarce Bean of Pelham, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was predecased by three brothers, Garland Emerson Scarce, William Henry Scarce, Curtis Tate Scarce; and one sister, Mary Scarce Rigney Paul.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Larry Davis and the Rev. J. Haywood Alcorn officiating. Interment will follow at Scarce Family Cemetery in Whitmell.

Patsy Riley Boswell
DANVILLE, Va. - Patsy Riley Boswell, 60, of 267 Howeland Circle, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 28, 1942, in Danville, she was a daughter of Alton B. Riley Sr. and Ruth Fields Riley.
She had lived most of her life in Danville and was employed with the Pittsylvania County Department of Social Services for over 30 years.
She was a graduate of George Washington High School and attended Averett College. She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.
She married John P. Boswell on June 19, 1959.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Martha B. Tucker of Ringgold; two brothers, Alton B. Riley Jr. of Danville and Richard W. Riley of Germantown, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

Mary Vowell Carter
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Vowell Carter, 93, formerly of 116 Westmoreland Court, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Sep. 11, 1909, in Haw River, N.C., she was the daughter of Thomas L. Vowell and Edmonia Vowell Vowell.
She was a graduate of Danville Public Schools and attended Averett College. She was an active member of Keen Street Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher.
She retired as office manager of M & M Furniture after 21 years of employment.
She was married to Hiram David Carter, who predeceased her on Feb. 15, 1981.
She is survived by two step-sons, Hiram D. Carter Jr. of Newport News and Charlie W.P. Carter of Greenwood, S.C.In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Iris V. Bailey.

James Arthur 'Mel' Henderson Jr.
PELHAM, N.C. - James Arthur "Mel" Henderson Jr., 60, of 125 Forest Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at his residence.
Born Aug. 28, 1942, in Caswell County, he was the son of James Arthur Henderson Sr. and Fannie Murphy Henderson.
He was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church and was a graduate of Caswell County High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Vietnam War and received a National Defense medal.
He also received a BA degree in business from Rockingham College.
He was employed by Metzler Co. as a team leader before retirement.
He was married to Pamela Harden Henderson.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by three daughters, Betty H. Wade, Sonya H. Davis, both of Reidsville, and Sandra Richardson of New Jersey; one son, Leonard Henderson of Eden; three stepsons, Ryan Harden of the residence, Javada Harden of Reidsville and Akeem Harden of Greensboro; four brothers, John Henderson, Louis Henderson, Charles Henderson and Micheal Henderson, all of Pelham; three sisters, Shirley Mitchell, Mary Graves and Debra Paylor, all of Pelham; and three grandchildren.

Born Sep.3, 1922, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of George Calvin Watlington and Bertha Blackwell Watlington.
She was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
She was married to Wesley Hodnett Jr., who predeceased her.
She is survived by 10 daughters, Phyllis Wilson, Atwater, Calif., Charlene Graves of Reidsville, Eva Harrell of Danville, Va., Ruby Walters of Milton, Irene Gunn, Ella Lea, Louise Garland, Rosa Clark, Anna Young and Joyce Hodnett, all of Yanceyville; four sons, Wesley Hodnett Jr., Dodge Hodnett, James Hodnett and Earl Hodnett, all of Yanceyville; six sisters, Ellen Turner, Wilson Watlington and Beatrice Watlington, all of Reidsville, and Odess McLaughlin, Margarie Jefferies and Bertha Hunt, all of Yanceyville; two brothers, Norman Watlington of Milton and James Watlington of Yanceyville; 30 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Idossa Watlington and one brother, Jake Watlington.
