DANVILLE, Va. - Roberta DeGroat Kyles, of 569 Bermuda Road, Danville died suddenly December 14, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 19, 1934, in Hillburn, New York, she had been a resident of Danville for the past 13 years. She lived most of her life in Hillburn, New York, where she was an elder and clerk of session at Brook Chapel and a retired secretary.
She leaves behind her beloved husband of 50 years, Frank Kyles Jr.; four children, Laurel, April, Frank III and David Kyles; two grandsons, Brenton and Kameron Kyles; mother-in-law, Madeline Kyles; five sisters, Betty Peterson, Joan Davis, Eileen Caldwell, Marilyn Glenda Royster, Kathi Davis, and Elaine LaForte; and a host of friends and relatives.
Services will be held at Brook Presbyterian Church in Hillburn, New York with arrangements by Scarr Funeral Home in Suffern, New York.
Evelyn H. Meadows
DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn H. Meadows, of 455 Brentwood Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Salisbury, N.C. and was a daughter of George Harrison and Cora Leonard Harrison.
She was retired from American National Bank after 41 years of service. At the time of her retirement, she was an assistant Vice President and manager of the West Main branch. She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, had served as treasurer for a number of years and was on the finance committee, teller committee and audit committee.
She was first married to Lenwood B. Wiles, who predeceased her in 1977. She later married John W. "Speedy" Meadows, who predeceased her in 1997.
She is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Wiles Seamster of Danville; a brother, Harold Harrison of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Peggy H. Lowe of Danville; two stepsons, Allen Meadows and Michael Meadows, both of Danville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by a brother, Vann Harrison.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Brown officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Sydney Moore Murray Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Sydney Moore Murray Jr., 84, of 222 Shamrock Drive, died Dec. 24, 2002, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 22, 1918, in Manhattan, N.Y., he was the son of Sydney Moore Murray Sr. and Petra Lampe Murray.
He graduated from Washington University.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy on a destroyer, the USS Breckinridge, with the rank of Chief Gunners Mate.
He retired as an engineer with McDonald Douglas Aircraft, and came to Danville in 1978 as the managing insurance agent for the Leggett Stores. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Danville Duplicate Bridge Club and the American Legion Post #1097.
He was married to Rebecca Andrews Murray.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by one stepdaughter, Bonnie E. Andrews of Augusta Springs; one step-grandchild and one great-grandchild.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family will be at the residence.

Lonnie McKinley Saunders
CULPEPER, Va. - Lonnie McKinley Saunders, 57, of 20022 Williams Drive, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at University of Virginia Hospital.
Born June 5, 1945, he was the son of Ernest Saunders and Cordelia Ferguson Saunders.
He was a graduate of Southside High School and Virginia State University and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during Vietnam. He was a warden with the Virginia Dept. of Corrections and a member of the National Association of Blacks in Justice. He was also a member of Bethel Baptist Church and an associate member of Ebenezer Baptist of Staunton.
He was married to Leila Olivia Saunders.
In addition to his wife of Culpeper, he is survived by a son, Philip T. Saunders of Culpeper and a brother, Sherman M. Saunders of Danville.
The funeral will be held at noon Saturday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Turner officiating. Interment will be in the Saunders Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Friday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of Sherman Saunders, 115 Druid Lane, Danville.

Lona Walker Doss
DANVILLE, Va. - Lona Walker Doss, 88, formerly of Franklin County, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Everlena D. Bowling.
Born Oct. 20, 1913, she was the daughter of the late John M. Walker and Geneva Adkins Walker.
She was married in 1932 to William Edward Doss who predeceased her in 1962. She made her home at Holiday Village for the past sixteen years, living previously in Franklin and Pittsylvania counties. She was a member of Gill's Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, William Garfield Doss Sr. of Danville and James M. "J.M" Doss of Chatham; one daughter, Everlena D. Bowling of Danville; one brother, Jack M. Walker of Glade Hill; four sisters, Ester W. Dillion of Glade Hill, Rachael W. Jefferson, Nancy W. Lee, and Tilitha J. Carter, all of Danville; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband, by three brothers, Sherman W. Walker, Harden Walker and Billy Walker; and two sisters, Matilda W. Amos and Blanche W. Doss.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Flora Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Larry Hollandsworth and Clarence Stone officiating. Interment will follow in the Doss Family Cemetery.

Marie Robertson Lattin
DANVILLE, Va. - Marie Compton Robertson Lattin, age 77, formerly of 23 Lanphere Road, Westerly, Rhode Island, died Thursday morning, July 25, 2002, at The Clipper Home in Westerly, Rhode Island, following a long illness.
Born November 29, 1924, in Danville, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Joel Landon Robertson and Maude Williams Robertson.
She was educated in the Danville Public Schools and was a 1943 graduate of George Washington High School where she was co-editor of the Chatterbox. She was graduated in 1947 with a B.A. in Economics from Woman's College, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She also earned a Masters in Social Work from the University of Connecticut at Storrs.
Prior to her retirement in 1991, she was a social worker for the Waterford, Connecticut Public Schools. She also had been a social worker for Family Services of New London, Connecticut.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Danville and was a former president of the American Association of University Women in New London, Connecticut. As a loving mother, grandmother and sister, she was always committed to family first.
She is survived by three daughters, Jean Elizabeth Lattin of Westerly, Rhode Island, Nancy Lattin Davis and her husband, Clyde Scott Davis, of Lakewood, Ohio, Jennifer Lattin Julier and her husband, Henry Samuel Julier III of Hamden, Connecticut; two grandchildren, Henry Vaillant Julier and Elspeth Robertson Julier of Hamden, Connecticut, and a sister, Betsy Robertson, of Danville. She is also survived by her companion, Prentice Andrew Lanphere, of Westerly, Rhode Island.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Friday, August 9, 2002, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. As requested by the deceased, graveside services will be private.

Robert Thomas 'Tom' Satterfield
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Robert Thomas "Tom" Satterfield, 73, of North Fifth Avenue, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born, April 5, 1929, in Caswell County, he was the son of William Rufus Satterfield and Annie Foster Satterfield.
He served in the United States Air Force, was retired from Royal Textiles Mill and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his wife, Anne Jeffries Satterfield, in July 1966.
He is survived by one daughter, Denise S. Wilborn of Roxboro; one son, Chief Warrant Officer Bernie Satterfield of Fort Bragg; and two grandsons.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery with Rev. Bryon Faggart officiating.

Ralph Turpin
COTTONWOOD, Ariz. - Ralph Nelson Turpin of Cottonwood, Ariz., died August 5, 2002.
Born April 27, 1947 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Nelson Turpin and Louise Brown Turpin, who both survive.
He was married to Sharon Williams Turpin of Cottonwood, Ariz., who also survives. He attended George Washington High School and entered the United States Navy following graduation. He remained in the Navy for 20 years and retired with the rank of First Petty Officer. After his military retirement, he was employed as the Eastern Regional Safety Director for Brown & Root until retiring due to illness.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Cottonwood and his parents of Danville, include one daughter, Rhonda T. Shearer of Arizona; one son, Robert N. Turpin, serving in the U.S. Navy in Texas; and two sisters, Rachel Taylor and Rosemary Bennett, both of Danville.
A memorial service will be held in Danville at a later date. Interment will be held in Arizona.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice Home Care Services.
George Clark
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - George Thomas Clark, 66, of 208 Sycamore Road, died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born July 11, 1935 in Halifax County, he was a son of Chester W. Clark Sr. and Gertrude Lacks Clark.
He was married to Faye Barker Clark, of South Boston, who survives. He was the retired owner of Clark's Repair Service, and was a former Sears service technician. He was a member of Clover Baptist Church and the William M. Tuck Airport Association.
Survivors include one daughter, Robin Clark Guthrie of Halifax; one son, Tommy Clark of South Boston; one sister, Beatrice "Bea" Bomar of Madison Heights; and one grandson.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Chester W. Clark Jr. and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. John Eure officiating. Interment will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Clarence Garrett
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Garrett, 75, of 3316 Horseshoe Road, died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at Martinsville Henry County Hospital following five months of declining health.
Born August 18, 1926, in Danville, he was a son of Benjamin Harrison Garrett and Stella Thomas Garrett.
He lived most of his life in Danville and worked as an installer for Cook Elevator for several years. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen Sherwood of Hurt; five sons, Gayle Garrett and Lennis Garrett, both of Marion, Ind., Dallas Garrett of Altavista, Raymond Garrett of Bassett, and Clarence A. Garrett of Hurt; one sister, Elsie Crews of Danville; one brother, Carson Donald Garrett of Dry Fork; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one daughter, Vivian Gail Garrett.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating and military honors by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 honor guard.

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Alice Graves Jones, of 1062 Foster Road, died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 22, 1913 in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Monjette Graves and Mary Cobb Graves.
She was married to Marshall Jones Sr., who predeceased her. She was a member of New Ephesus Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary L. Jones of Newport News, Va.; one sister, Lula G. Williamson of Yanceyville; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one son, Marshall Jones Jr., and five brothers, John Graves, Henry Graves, Percy Graves, Walter Graves and James Graves, and two sisters, Fannie Bell and Lillie Brown.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Ephesus Baptist Church in Ruffin, N.C., with the Rev. William Lee officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Nellie Pruitt
CHATHAM, Va. - Nellie Cundiff Pruitt, 72, of Oak Grove Lodge, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born June 30, 1929, she was a daughter of Albert Sidney Cundiff and Pearlie Myers Cundiff.
She was married to Virgil Pruitt, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville and worked in the nursery of Danville Memorial Hospital. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Manuel of Danville; one brother, the Rev. Charlie Cundiff of Danville; two stepdaughters, Virginia Newton and JoAnne Woodall, both of Danville; two stepsons, Jackie Pruitt and Bobby Pruitt, both of Danville; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilbert Hawks officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
