Elgin Jerry Phillips, Jr. departed this life on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va. He was death by three sons Albert, David and Larry Phillips. He leaves to cherish his memory five sons Charles Phillips of Falls Church, Va. Jerry Hendricks of New River, Va. Douglas Phillips, Rodrick and Raymond Houston of Pulaski, Va. Seven daughters Donna P. Jones, Phyllis Martin, Lilly Morton, and Gloria Baldwin all of Radford, Va., Elaine Harris of Alexandria, Va., Charlene Thornton and Jackie Houston both of Pulaski, Va. Four sisters Kathleen Hooper of Sanford, N.C. Linda Lou Phillips of Roanoke, Va. Irma Smith and Alcester Cockeran both of Pulaski, Va. One brother Robert Phillips of Fayetteville, N.C. and a host of other relatives and friends.

GETTYSBURG, PA - Carl Arthur Schmidt, husband of Colleen M. Schmidt, (formerly of Christiansburg and Pulaski), death by Ellen Schmidt of Pulaski. He is survived by wife, Colleen; son, Freddie Schmidt (Kitty); granddaughter, Theresa Weaver (Jon); grandson, Jonathan Schmidt (Scarlett); step-daughter, Diana Butler (Tom), step grandson, John Nicholson and great granddaughters Ellen Weaver, Sarah Weaver and Sydney Schmidt. JOHN WESLEY BROOKS
PULASKI - John Wesley Brooks, a resident of 1980 Peppers Ferry Road, Pulaski, Va. and Sylva, N.C. born August 28, 1925 in Radford, Va., a son of the late Robert Lee and Ruth Godbey Moore. He was a graduate of Pulaski High School and after serving in the Navy in World War II, graduated from Virginia Tech. He retired after 30 years with Ashland Oil, served as coordinator of River Cities Harvest for fourteen years, and was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church in Ashland.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Pearl Adams Moore; three sons, Raymond W. Moore Jr., his wife, Chiquita of Decatur, Ala., Mark G. Moore, his wife Melody of St. Cloud, Minn. and Thomas D. Moore, his wife Leisa of Cincinnati, Ohio; a daughter, Elizabeth Shirey, her husband David of Muscle Shoals, Ala. and a sister, Ruth M. Pickett of Chapel Hill, N.C. Mr. Moore was blessed with eleven grandchildren.
In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in died Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC.
He was married Marguerite Morris in 1939. They celebrated their 66th anniversary in March. Before retiring in 1983, he was co-owner and manager of Blue Ridge Supply Company, a wholesale grocery distributor in Pulaski, VA, for more than 40 years. Following his retirement, he moved to Cana, VA, where he lived until moving into Ridgecrest Retirement Community in Mount Airy in 2001.
While living in Pulaski, VA, he served as treasurer of the First Baptist Church and treasurer of the Pulaski High School Band Boosters. He also helped found the SHARE program in Pulaski, VA.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Morris Brown of Mount Airy, NC; a daughter and son-in-law, Clara B. and William E. Cox of Blacksburg, VA; three sons and two daughters-in-law, J. Morris and Phyllis Brown of Payson, AZ, Dennis E. and Kay Brown of Carrollton, VA, and Joseph H. Brown of Montgomery County, VA; five grandchildren, Kevin Brown of Rock Hill, SC, Eric Brown of Raleigh, NC, Wendy Cox Royston of Smithfield, VA, Wesley Brown of Asheville, NC, and Jamie Brown of Charlotte, NC; a step-granddaughter, Wendy Donnelly of Weare, NH; two great-granddaughters, Olivia Brown of Rock Hill, SC, and Emerson Brown of Raleigh, NC; two great-step-grandsons, Cullen Donnelly and Konnor Beaudoin, both of Weare, NH; a brother, Glenn A. Brown of Hampton, VA; and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces. He was preceded in funeral service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2005, at 11:00 AM at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Mount Airy, NC, followed by a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Mount Carmel Baptist Church Building Fund, 123 Mount Carmel Church Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030; the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Lillian Beke, a sweet and loving soul, death by her husband of 50 years, Steven Beke, her parents, John and Anna Racz, and a sister, Elsie Racz. Surviviors include her children, Alice Thompson of Dublin, VA, Paul Beke of Bristow, VA, Bob Beke of Cary, NC and Steve Beke of Port Orange, FL; 8 grandchildren; a sister, Olga Bodnar of Fallsington, PA; a brother, Ted Racz of Yardville, NJ; several nieces and nephews, along with several great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Dublin with Rev. John K. Boyd officiating. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with the Rev. Richard Hurst officiating. Cemetery (Pulaski County) where the V.F.W. Post #1184 will conduct full military honors. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bobwhite Blvd., Pulaski.

DUBLIN – Anne Lester, age 52 of Dublin, Born June 25, 1952 in Pulaski, she is the daughter of Mary Smith Lester and the late Roland Joseph Lester, Sr. Ms. Lester was a former employee of Radford University. She is survived by her mother; Mary Smith Lester of Dublin: and a brother; R. J. Lester, Jr. of Bluemont, Va. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2005 at 11 a.m. in Shiloh cemetery. There will be no visiting at the funeral home. Mrs. Manuel was a long-time member of the First Christian Church, & worked for many years at the Davids Smartware Store in Pulaski. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Shirley Manuel, & 1 sister; Ethylene Huddle of Virginia Beach. Funeral services will be held Wednesday April 27, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Thomas M.
