Died Thursday, May 13, 2004. Funeral services were held 12 noon Monday at Race Street Baptist Church, Farmville, with interment in the church died Friday, May 14, 2004 at McGuire Veterans Hospital.
He was death by his first wife, Evelyn Gregory Griffin, a brother, Tommie C. Griffin and a step - granddaughter, Tammy Lynn Micklem.
Mr. Griffin was a veteran of World War II. He served in Africa and Italy, where he was wounded. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 8446 and past deacon of Mulberry Grove Baptist Church, of which he was a dedicated member and worker.
He is survived by his wife, Eunice M. Griffin; a son, Bruce Hastings Griffin of Appomattox;stepsons, Patrick E. Micklem and wife, Joyce of Appomattox and Glenn Micklem and wife, Stephanie of Madison Heights;stepdaughter, Rhonda Simpson and husband, Allen of Stafford;two grandchildren; seven step - grandchildren;three sisters, Lucille Diehr of Manassas, Bernice Wells of Shipman and Gwen Wood and husband, Robert of Charlottesville.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at Mulberry Grove Baptist Church.
Arrangements were by Dunkum Funeral Home, Dlllwyn.

MAY 18 - Edward Dewey Smith, 84, of Farmville, born March 12, 1920 in Waynesville, NC, a son of the late Rowe and Dollie Green Smith.
Mr. Smith served in the United States Army and Navy. He retired from Benson and Phillips Company after 30 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Arbie E. Smith; a son, Charles E. Smith and fiancé, Elaine Nell of Herndon; a granddaughter, Charlan S. Smith of Haymarket; sisters. Burr Medford and Roxie Brown both of Waynesville, NC and a sister - in - law, Virgie Stevenson of Newport News.
A interment in the church interment in the Buckingham Community died Monday, May 3, 2004 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
She was married to the late U.S. Navy Commander John Kurtz Metzger.
A member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, she served as a member of the Chancel Choir, In - Saints Alive Chorus and the Carrillion Hand Bells. She was also a member of the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Officer Wives Club, the Goldsboro Retired Officer Wives Club and the Retired Officers of Goldsboro Association.
She is survived by one daughter, Jean Hubbard of Goldsboro; one son, Gary Metzger; a grandson and good friend, Betty Holloman.

SUFFOLK, May 6 - Gertrude Hughes James, 97, of Suffolk, widow of John Ausbon James, funeral service will be conducted Friday at 12 noon by the Rev. Dr. David H. Chauncey in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory. The family will receive friends in the funeral home following the service. Cemetery in Rice on Saturday, May 8 at 1 p.m.
